Anyone here swapped or replaced a variocam solenoid on a 987 S? Hard to find any info regarding this exact model. Some articles for earlier cars call for a "holding tool" and maybe removing the valve cover, but others say "my mechanic swapped the two solenoids to see if the CEL followed" so I'm guessing it's not THAT involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

The cam cover stays in place. They pull out fairly easily once the clamp down assembly is removed. You want the area to be clean. Here is a shot of the "relay" removal tool Porsche uses. They also recommend wrapping the solenoid to protect it. You might consider buying a DIY subscription to AllData. Good luck.
