Although not thinking it was the problem, i charged up the battery.
Leading evidence: 'problem, i charged up the battery' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'problem, i charged up the battery' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check done, be' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I think you need to get a diagnostic check done, be that at an OPC or indy.

You might want to check fuses C1 and C2, which power the DME and ignition.

Just thinking about checking the supply to it with a meter.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Went to start my 2000 model 996 today and nothing happens...... The doors unlocked as normal with the remote. You put the key in the ignition and all the lights come on as per normal. Everthing appears to be working(lights, radio, blower etc) but as soon as you turn the ignition to start the engine.....nothing happens. The engine does not turn over. Although not thinking it was the problem, i charged up the battery. Again there was no change when i re-connected it. I have also tried the other key, no joy. Anybody got any pointers?
Thanks
It's not an immobiliser problem as your car would turn over and probably start for a second or two. I suspect you have a problem with the starter motor or the starter solenoid. Is there any clicking when you turn the ignition key?
It might be an immobiliser problem, as when it cuts in it inhibits cranking the engine.
You might want to check fuses C1 and C2, which power the DME and ignition.
Thanks for the reply Richard,
I rocked the car in gear and got the engine going once. This sort of indicated the starter but i only managed to start it once. It would have been nice to get it going after rocking it again. It might have been a coincidence......
Any, starter is coming out today and i'll see from there.
The plan of attack has changed to the ignition switch.
With taking out the throttle body you can then get at the starter with a meter. With turning the ignition on to start and a meter on the body and solenoid( thinner black wire) you do not get any voltage....There is 12 volts going to the main terminal on the solenoid when the ignition is just on ( lights on the dash). You can also short between main terminal and smaller black wire and the starter turns.....looks like the starter is ok.
Disaster..... Just changed out the ignition switch.Turned the ignition and nothing. Just the same. I guess it is an immobiliser problem after all. Any new pointers.
If you say that the engine will run with a bump start, then it can't be the immobiliser. The immobiliser inhibits not only the starter motor, but also the fuel injection and ignition system.
Not been able to attempt to bump start it as it is already at the bottom of a fairly steep drive. The wrong way round for the towing eye point. Is it the fuel pump that it also inhibits? Just thinking about checking the supply to it with a meter.
If it is a problem with the immobiliser what is the way forward to getting it fixed? Is it a tow to the Porsche garage and let them do it?
I can't say how it inhibits the fuel injection system, but I would suspect that it would isolate the pump as well as the injectors themselves.
I think you need to get a diagnostic check done, be that at an OPC or indy.
You can screw the towing eye in the back or front, by the way.
