Depends on the model year, as they changed the control module to include this feature on the pre-facelift in around 2000.

Suggestion

You can already do this if you have a facelift 996 or a Turbo - just use the switches and it changes to manual mode for 8 seconds before reverting to auto, if you don't change gear again

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I notice that on the 997s you can drive in auto mode and switch gear manually if needed (without having to go into manual mode). Surely this is just a software-type issue and can be hacked into on a 996? Or not?!

POST 2Original post

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

bummer - I have a pre-facelift! I wonder whether its possible to upgrade the software - assuming it is a software issue?

POST 4Original post

Depends on the model year, as they changed the control module to include this feature on the pre-facelift in around 2000. I don't think it would be possible to get the software changed, but it might be possible to fit a later control module. :dont know:

POST 5Original post

Wasn't this feature only available on the Mercedes-Benz box?

POST 6Original post

I'm pretty sure I've heard people on here mention that they have this feature on later pre-facelift models with ZF gearboxes. Maybe someone else can confirm it.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
