Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know all about the occasional smoke on start up (piston ring gaps all lined up and allowing oil past??) but has anyone experienced the james bond style smoke screen while driving hard?, just had one myself, how embarrassing

POST 2Original post

White smoke? If so, it could be the air-oil separator.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah it was white, it cleared up almost immediately though, if oil separator was the problem wouldn't that keep belching smoke out?

POST 4Original post

Almost certainly the oil separator. Not too expensive on a manual. More on a tip as other bits have to be removed to get at it.

POST 5Original post

re smoke cloud Hi My 996 when i give it big licks uo this particular hill blasts out white smoke for up to two days then clears up,will this be the oil air seperator and if so are they easy to fit? cheers moe

POST 6Original post

Had this too, but blue smoke, and had oil separator changed but still does it. Only occurs after a spirited drive though! Strasse in Leeds maintain my car - it's A1 mechanically and has been for the 2.5 years I've occasionally had it happen. Only thing I would say is check your oil levels if it keeps occurring!

POST 7Original post

An article about this appeared in 911 and porsche world about a year ago, mines done it,its nothing to worry about. Its oil sitting in the inlet manifold that accumalates over a period of time. and then when theres enough it will be drawn into the cylinders, this usually happens when cornering hard. Mike
