Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm fairly new to this myself, but the 996 also seemed to take a lot of flack because it was the first water cooled model, which upset many purists (people with beards).
Leading evidence: 'first water cooled model' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'first water cooled model' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair by resleeving' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Usually fixed when new clutch change, more annoying rather than serious

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys im new on here, i currently own a BMW Alpina, but looking for some new taste in cars, ive chosen to go down the Porsche route, have not yet purchased as im looking to get familier with them!! can i ask whats the designation nubers 996, 993, 964 and 997 e.t.c. all mean? ive noticed that the 996 seems to be cheaper in price can i ask why? are they good any problems?
Sorry to ask all questions but am sure you guys are the experts and im only learning, i am an ex-bmw mechanic (16 years) so am clued up in engineering just not on porsches!
Thanks in advance.

Those are model numbers . A very brief summary
997: 2004 + (water cooled)
996: 1997-2005 (water cooled)
993: 1993-1998 (air cooled)
964: 1989-1993 (air cooled)
997: most recent model and therefore prices still high
996: produced in far greater numbers than any previous 911 so there are more around which keeps prices low
993: last of the air cooled 911's and most probably the most sort after especially the wide body cars - 'S' on the end
Each model comes in various guises: C2 (S), C4 (S), Targa, Turbo (S), GT3 (RS) and GT2
Just to add... C2 = 2 wheel drive, C4 = all wheel drive, S = Big arse.
I'm fairly new to this myself, but the 996 also seemed to take a lot of flack because it was the first water cooled model, which upset many purists (people with beards). I believe this also had an effect on it's price.
For the money it's an absolutely amazing car.
Hi guys, thanks so much for your reply, ive seen so many 996 for cheap prices, i.e. 14-19 K why is that, is the engines good? troublesome in that model type, its that i want to get the right spec of car rather then being messed up on, :dont know:
did they ever come with sat nav in the 996 model?
cheers again, sorry for the silly questions etc...
J
S is a bit more than the arse... In 996 terms, the S comes with a turbo front, for instance... And with the 997, they turned it all around and made the 4 wheel drives big arsed regardless of the 'S' (both C4 and C4S is wide body, while C and CS is narrow)... The 'S' (both 2 and 4 wheel drive) has got the 3,8 l engine.
The Turbo S, now that's a different story... 500 bhp
Welcome to the forum!
The cars in the £14-19k category are the mainly the 1998 - 2001 models with the 3.4L engines. The 2002-2005 models came with the 3.6L engines and usually priced from the early to the late 20's with the Turbos creeping into the mid to late £30's. The GT3 models are rarely below the £40's whilst the RS, GT2 and the Turbo S are £50k +
Sat Nav (often referred to PCM) was an option all cars. PCM 1.0 was offered on all models up until 2002. In 2003, PCM 2.0 was offered and had extra functionality including a 16:9 ratio screen as opposed to the 4:3 size on the PCM 1.0.
A well maintained and serviced 996 should have no engine problems - look out for all the receipts and service stamps.

Hi
Welcome to the 911 forum. 996 model great and from an ex E46 M3 owner who now owns a 2003 Carrera 4, manual a very worthwhile move. Both great all rounders but the 911 has a little extra edge and character.I am also slightly faster in my 911 than M3. Very similar running costs. Only can't fit 2 adults in back or carry golf clubs properly. Good buyers guide in evo which I have sent link

Like all models occasional faults. People estimate <5% of 996 had bore liner problems resulting in cracked liners. Traditionally new engine but autofarm and hartech can repair by resleeving. Difficult to predict which car . Maybe earlier mark 1 3.4L 996 more prone but also cases of 3.6L engines affected. However the 3.6L engine also carried over largely unchanged to teh mark 1 997 model. Turbos/GT2 and GT3 had different block design based on older GT1 racer engine and didn't have this specific problem. You might have also heard of the RMS seal leaks which also affected 997 till mark 2, this can result in slight weep of oil from seal. Usually fixed when new clutch change, more annoying rather than serious
M3 CSL more similar to GT3 but I didn't like BMW SMG gearbox. Both 996 and M3 models very rewarding but needs full service history. Mine still delivers 320 BHP on the dyno after 7 years and very tight. Only costs so far brakes, discs, tyres, oil and consumables. Budget on £1000-2000/year basic cost of upkeep
Try lots and enjoy. So many to choose from . Like being in a sweet shop
