I always thought that an engine would run hotter with the A/C on due to the added work in running the compressor, etc.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have noticed that the engine on my daily driver '01 996 runs about 10 degrees cooler with the A/C on than when off. I do the same commute to work every day (1/2 hr) and especially if I turn the A/C off halfway home, the temp will surge up. I always thought that an engine would run hotter with the A/C on due to the added work in running the compressor, etc. Any comments?

POST 2Original post

hehehe. Mine does the same thing, It is because when you turn on the ac it turn on the fans that are actually mounted behind the radiators and pull the air from the front of the car through the condensor radiators through the coolant radiators and out to the bottom. I used to turn on the ac in bad traffic here in la before I got my gt3 radiator. Now I don't really have to nor care. Weird huh? Almostmakes you want to just tap the wire and put them on a switch for canyon runs

POST 3Original post

My 996 is similar. The DME automatically turns on the radiator fans on when the A/C is on. If the A/C coolant pressure is high, then the DME runs the fans at the high speed setting. Without the A/C on the fans switch on at about 200 degrees (low setting) and 215 degrees (high setting).

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
