Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys My cars recently been blowing smoke out of the back on start up a little too often for my liking, so I asked my local indy and he said it was the oil seperator that's no good, I took the car to him on Monday to get the new one fitted and told him about a problem I've noticed, which is when I start the car the revs drop off after fire up and sometimes stalls, also when driving at a steady speed the revs seem to fluctuate and when I'm at a stand still in drive with my foot on the brake, the revs again sometimes drop to the point where it nearly stalls, these problems are intermittent by the way. My indy suggested it would be the MAF (which I'd only cleaned out a couple of weeks prior and my mpg has improved since), then the following day when I picked the car up he said that he thinks there has been previous problems as the butterfly valve has had a hole drilled in it to aid air flow. When I got home I unplugged the MAF and the car drove really bad, stalling everytime I slowed down. Now I am worried that there is a major underlying problem, has anyone got any ideas or has had the same problem. Cheers Gary

POST 2Original post

Is it a C2 or C4? If it's a C2 with mechanical throttle, it would be worth cleaning out the idle control valve. Drilling the butterfly is a real bodge though, and if it is the idle control valve which is gummed up (a common problem) you will end up with a higher idle. If it is a C4, then try cleaning the throttle body. Carbon builds up and stops the butterfly closing consistently.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply Richard, yeah it's a C2, looks like I'll give the idle control valve a clean, if I need a new butterfly do you know if it's expensive to replace? The cars had a silsleeve engine fitted 2 1/2 years ago by Autofarm, can't believe someones drilled a hole! Gary

POST 4Original post

You can't buy the butterfly by itself - you have to buy the whole throttle body (£750). The idle control valve is screwed to the side of the body. There is a gasket, so it might be worth investing in one before you start. Part number 996.110.310.50 (£1.28 inc vat). See what happens after you have done the cleaning. Depending on where the hole is placed, maybe it could be plugged with a screw and (nyloc) nut. I guess that there could be other causes for an erratic idle, but best to start with the cheap and easy fixes.
