Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all :bye: I've just had my gearbox stripped and main pinion bearing replaced on my MY99 C4 83k, The car had an annoying whine from the gearbox through 3,4, and 5th gear under load and hence getting it stripped. This was undertaken during some other work including poly belt, geo, discs, pads. Prior to collecting the car the indy had road tested and said the whine had gone but there was some chatter in second gear. I have collected the car and there is some chatter in second but the gearbox is smooth. Do you think this chatter will diminish or get worse over time? Could this be from the new bearings? Any advice would be much appreciated as I am not too familiar with the internals of the 996's gearbox. Thanks Andy
