So I've been trying to figure this out for days ... my convertible top is stuck in the "up" position.
When I release the handle from the roof and press the top down button, I can hear the relay click and the dashboard indicates that the top is lowering but nothing else happens. The windows don't dip, no noise from the back, nothing - just a relay click and dashboard notification.
So far I've tried:
Swapped relays for top up and down
New Fuse in spot E3 (power top)
New top latch microswitch
None of this has made any difference, still just the same as when I started.
I'm really at a loss and I can't find a full wiring diagram for the Boxster, only the Cayman. There are no other electrical issues (that I've noticed) with the car - I've checked everything else controlled by the Rear Control Unit such as the spoiler, tail lights, etc ... and it all works fine.
What's throwing me off are the windows not dropping. I don't know what controls that or what could be causing them not to. If I hold the "top down" button and manually press the microswitch I can hear the relay click off, to me that seems to indicate that the switch is making a connection (and I've tried a new switch) I thought maybe it was a limit switch on the convertible top motor or something tricking the car into thinking that the roof is already lowered ... however due to the notification on the dashboard that it is lowering and the relay clicking, I don't know if that could even be it.
Ideas?
Perhaps there is a vacuum leak? I am guessing, but some cars use a vacuum assist mechanism to operate the power windows, so maybe that is the case with the
Boxster
and its top too.
have you already solved the issue?
I had similar symptoms and checkt a lot...make a long story shot: roof top motor replaced.
You can check the motor by direct contact at the two pins in installed position.
If required, i can post some pictures of the motor, connector and pins.
Funny you should mention that. Here's a quick update:
The top started working! Well at first it went down, but when I went to raise it, it closed, but it obviously didn't trip a microswitch somewhere and the computer thought it was still in the process of closing so the windows wouldn't go all the way up and the computer gave the convertible top controller fault on the dashboard - also wouldn't go back down after that. Fast forward 2 days and the top starts working fine, still is, up and down like a champ. But with that kind of intermittent problem I know it's only a matter of time before it returns so I'm still tracking it down.
However I have noticed the convertible top motor sounds a little "strained" ... which was leading me to think the convertible top motor might just be going out. What symptoms were you having? And yes, the photos would be very helpful if you don't mind.
exactely the same symptoms: Roof top was mechanical closed but error code and windows remained in "roof operatin position"
The
986
had a micro switch(es) for closed roof top cover. 987 not. -> controlled similar as bulbs.
I connected the roof top motor direct with 12V and nothing happend. internal short cut. (disassembled the part completely)
bought a new one, installed, problem solved.
you can operate through the roll over bar...just need long arms
Hoping all of the brilliant advice I've freely given to clients and drunken girlfriends will finally pay off:
PROBLEM: 2005
Porsche
Boxter 987 Convertible TOP IS STUCK in up position.
SO FAR:Replaced micro switch but, that didn't solve the problem. HISTORY: I left the top down in the rain, twice. I caught it fairly quickly the 2nd time and the top went up fine. The
NEXT
MORNING the top would not go back down. -the windows drop down upon pulling the latch but, the top doesn't move after pushing the switch on the console. There is no buzzing or sound from motor-a multi-meter was used to check the driver's side panel fuses.
PREVIOUS/ONGOING PROBLEM: Door latch on driver side is faulty. Could these two issues be related? ALSO, the computer underneath the driver seat stayed dry and I am not having any other electrical problems. I would appreciate ANY advice and THANK YOU in advance.
sorry to revive such an old thread but i'm in a similar situation. where did you find the Relay?
i'm hoping someone can help me. i'm trying to figure out whats happened to the soft top on my 2007 Base model. I'm thinking its a relay but can't find the damn thing. a little background on the issue. bought the car with the understanding that the soft top didn't work. i've ordered a new motor thinking that may solve the issue, sadly it didn't. replaced the microswitch at the front latch assembly with no luck. When i check to see if the motor is making any noise or vibration when i push the switch i'm not getting anything nor do the windows dip as they would normally do when you raise/lower the top. that leads me to think perhaps the Relay has gone bad but the only thing i can find is the relay box for the
986
which is just above the fuse box in the drivers footwell. can anyone advise me to where i might find this elusive beast? or if you have any other ideas on the soft top repair, i would be eternally grateful.
I had a bear of a time finding the relays as well so here are a couple links that will help. The relays you are looking for (one up one down) are in positions 3 and 5 in relay carrier 1 very well hidden above the fuse box behind the dash. You'll have to get the carpet around the fuse box out of the way by removing the 3 philips screws on each side and bottom of the fuse block. The links should tell you the rest!
Relay carrier locations and relay assignment (don't forget to hit
next
page in the upper right hand corner):
Porsche Workshop Manuals > Boxster S (987) F6-3.2L (2005) > Maintenance > Fuses and Circuit Breakers > Relay Box > Component Information > Locations
How to remove relay carrier 1 from it's support bracket and get access to the convertible top relays:
Porsche Workshop Manuals > Boxster S (987) F6-3.4L (2008) > Relays and Modules > Relays and Modules - Power and Ground Distribution > Relay Box > Component Information > Service and Repair > Removing and Installing Relay Carrier 1 (Front)
In my case replacing the replays did not do the trick, so next up is a new convertible top motor. My problem is intermittent and getting worse (rarely responds to even prolonged engagement of the convertible top switch, looks like a tired motor on my 2006 Boxster S). Good luck to us both!
I have a
987.2
so I'm not sure if it is the same as yours, but there is an emergency closing procedure in the owners manual.
