lesson learned is have them check the cause codes before you go resetting anything.

yes, do be very careful to reset check engine lights...i was having recurring check engine lights in the past 6 months, had the dealer check only to find that they saw a note in the DME of weak voltage which was from me disconnecting the battery, and never gave the real reason why it came on.

Check engine light came on and oil gauge is fluctuating, dealer changed O2 sensors, made the check engine light off but not the fluctuation, so had to change the oil sensors too and back to normal, the question is?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had this once before due to a loose gas cap. If that's what it is this time (and I had just filled the tank), can't remember if it will reset itself after I tightened the cap.
If it will reset itsel I have to start looking for other causes, since it's still on....
Can anyone comment?
Thanks.
You can reset it by removing the battery cable for 2 minutes. If it then comes back (it will be off initially) then you still have a problem - gas cap and oil filler cap are most common (assuming it is running right).
My check engine light came on a couple of months back, I thought it was a gas cap issue and that the dealer would just need to reset it. It turned out that the o2 sensor was bad, so they replaced it. I wouldn't just reset it, have it checked out.

It appears that my model year 2000 C2 there is a recall for the air flow meter giving incorrect temp readings for air, possibly causing theck check engine light to turn on. I haven't got that light on recently so I hope the recall and flash upgrade they did helped and that was what was causing the light to come on. lesson learned is have them check the cause codes before you go resetting anything.
Check engine light came on and oil gauge is fluctuating, dealer changed O2 sensors, made the check engine light off but not the fluctuation, so had to change the oil sensors too and back to normal, the question is? The dealer had a convincing answer why could this happen???NORMAL
Anyone disagree with my dealer
Thanks Loren. I reset it myself by disconnecting the battery. As Ruey cautions, though, if the light does come back on I'll take it in.
I need to find a local mechanic anyway, since the nearest dealer is 600 miles from here. Hope in the few years I've been here someone has the equipment and experience to (finally) deal with the 996--when I first arrived no one did. Any recommendations in Billings, Bozeman or Northern Wyoming?
Gary,
If you're having troubles with a check engine light, you're going to need a mechanic with a PST2. In the DC area, where we have lots of independent Porsche shops, there is only one that I know of that has made the investment to buy a PST2 (I think they cost over $10K).
The check engine light can be caused by a wide variety of problems, basically anything that affects the air/fuel mixture or exhaust gas can trigger it. While the car is usually driveable, if there is a serious problem, the DME will go into limp mode and you can feel a noticeable lack of power. If this occurs, I would recommend not driving it.
I had a cracked oil separator which created a vacuum leak. This leaned out the engine and the DME enriched the fuel mixture to try to compensate. I kept driving and the resulting heat from the richer mixture ended up melting the oil evaporator pipes and a wiring harness. It was a $2000+ repair, not covered under warranty. So if you start to notice any loss of power, I would immediate get the car into a dealer or good mechanic.
Karl
Karl,
When you had a limp mode, did the car start to shudder and drive like a boat? I may have experienced that limp mode when I was experiencing my check engine light a while back, but since the dealer put a new flash program into my car last month it never happened again.
Like I said, sometimes although you solved the check engine light from coming back, its very frustrating that you were unable to know the true cause for resetting it before getting the trouble codes.
Ruey,
In limp mode my car didn't shudder but it was noticeably down on HP. It accelerated like it had 150 Hp instead of 300. I don't think a limp mode condition would normally be cured by just a flash of new software unless the fault was the DME itself.
Karl
Karl,
You're probably right, but I am lucky because the scary light never comes on again since I went to the Porsche dealer for warranty check.
The engine on my car was sputtering so bad that it sounded like a john deere lawnmower, and accelerated like a boat. To be honest it was so bad that I thought I blew the motor. Will post again if it ever reoccurs.
Hey Gary, I experieced this same problem a while back. Every time I would fill up my car and then drive half a tank full the check engine light would come on and not go off untill nearly an empty tank. AFter four visits to te dealer they figured out there was a porsche recall notice to fix something with the gas tank seal. If they didnt do it, mention it to them. HTH
