But I do agree that you should remove the axles and give them a thorough look/clean/re-grease to ensure that they are in good order.

I'm being told that these can't be replaced or reattached and you have to replace the entire drive shaft.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi All, Looking for a bit of help here. I've found a couple posts on this, but can't seem to find a clear answer. I just purchased an 06 Cayman S with about 60k miles. On inspection, both rear outer CV joint boots came apart from the hub. See attached photo. I'm being told that these can't be replaced or reattached and you have to replace the entire drive shaft. Is this really the case? I can't imagine replacing both drive shafts just because the boot separated?? Many Thanks! Andy

POST 2Original post

Since you don't know how long it's been like this and dirt has compromised the internals, I'd replace them.

POST 3Original post

You can purchase aftermarket boots. But I do agree that you should remove the axles and give them a thorough look/clean/re-grease to ensure that they are in good order. The Porsche purist will cringe at a Rockauto reference, but I check there first for common items because they have a very easy and well laid out Porsche parts listing for mobile browser. At least for my 987.1 they do. Sent from my SM-G988U using Tapatalk

POST 4Original post

Thanks for the replies! The axles are out and inspected, and seem to be alright. Will be cleaned and regreased. The issue is, is that on the outside of the axle, there is no outer mount for the boot. It is pressed into the hub(?). See pics. So it doesn't seem that there is a way to attach the outside of the boot with a clamp as there is no lip. Am I missing something? Andy

POST 5Original post

If I remember correctly one of the boots is not replace-able. I had a similar issue and ended up with new axles.

POST 6Original post

if there is a re-machining/re-conditioning service nearby, you can get them done up by professionals.
