Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Best thing to do is to get the the fluid level checked by an indy.
Leading evidence: 'Check by an indy' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check by an indy' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Porsche recommend 96k miles but the fluid is usually black by then.

Is it the torque converter that locks so therefore a new/repaired convertor only required?

It might work out cheaper in the end instead of having various things changed before the fault is found.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I have owned a yr 2000 996 C4 Cab tiptronic for the last 2 years and have had no major problems until recently. The car has a full OPC and indy service history and has covered 57,000 miles. 2 months ago I began to feel what I can only describe as 'cluch slip' when accelerating. It is bizarre feeling when changing up a gear, the revs increase when accelerating!! Manual tip function operates OK. I have been told by an Indy that the 'lock up' is failing (or failed) so I assume the box is effectively running by the torque converter. Still plenty of drive, accelerates well and economy OK, but it is obviously not running right.
Can anyone explain how the 'lock up' on the upper gears works and if there is a fix to the torque converter? Is it the torque converter that locks so therefore a new/repaired convertor only required? The gearchange and gearbox seems OK.
If anyone has experienced this and could share with me their outcome or if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.
My first post, but I have found the forum very helpful in the past.
Best thing to do is to get the the fluid level checked by an indy.
Better still is to have the fluid and filter changed. Porsche recommend 96k miles but the fluid is usually black by then. Also get the indy to plug the car onto the diagnostics to see if there are any faults recorded.
Slipping can be a feature of incorrect fluid level, worn brake bands or malfunctioning valves.
Hi Minny,
I've had these initial checks done. The fluid has been changed with no real difference felt. The car has been hooked up to the diagnostics and no error codes are reported which is puzzling.
The conclusion is that it must be a mechanical problem. Since posting, I have done a bit of digging to find that auto transmissions have a Torque Converter clutch which provides the lock up. I can't remember (from previous threads) if my g/box is Mercedes or ZF.
Does anyone know if the clutch is activated electronically or hydraulically which may indicate a fault in the sensors or activators? I have to agree though if this was the case, error codes will be shown.
Something I did notice for a few months before this problem occurred was a 'thud' during a hard kick down which may have been the TC clutch activating abnormally as the problem has now gone away.
Does this sound like a TC overhaul or a full gearbox overhaul?
Many thanks.
The Mercedes box is not the ZF box. Yours is made by Mercedes themselves. JPAT transmissions are supposed to know their stuff. If it was my car I would take it to a couple of indys first then go to a autobox specialist to see what they say before deciding what to do. It could be a worn box or TC problem but you need someone who knows autoboxes well to advise you. It might work out cheaper in the end instead of having various things changed before the fault is found.
