numeric racing cables disconnected from the shifter and left me needing a tow
thought this was unheard of because the SSK and cables are the updated numeric setup
they are years old and it’s a plastic cap, but has anyone else experienced this?
Haven't heard of that at all. Sounds like a bad installation might be the reasoning. I had to make adjustments to mine post install and I could barely get the damn cables off from the ball joints once the plastic clip was on there. Can't imagine that would come loose on it's own unless the piece was broken when it was installed or something.
Call up Numeric and see if they can help you out if you don't get it straightened out. Very helpful folks over there.
It's been a long time but with my kit they sent a couple extra clips. I found I had to break one to remove it, so I only have one extra. Was thinking of asking Numeric to mail me a couple extras. Or, since it is probably an off-the-shelf part, if anyone knows what these are called and where they can be bought, I'll buy some.
I too had a couple of extras that they shipped with the cables and amazing shifter.
I mistook those fragile looking little cups for being...... well, fragile. I don't see how the cable would fall off.
Having said that, they sell the cups separate. Really inexpensive, although shipping costs will thwart the bargain. Wish they sold a larger product line and I could have used the shopping cart on those shipping costs.

mine separated as shown. I had a local shop do the install and they clearly didn’t do something right as part of the install. I called numeric and sent them this photo. They sent some new end pieces for free and the shop “fixed” it. Hasn’t come loose again but definitely a bit of anxiety of it happening again.
Hmmmm
Looks like they may have underutilized the Socket-end threads (yellow) and instead used the threaded union (red) to absorb too much of the rod.
I installed mine and purposely used as much of the Socket threads as possible. It actually shipped pretty close to how I ended up installing them.
At the transmission end I didn't have the turnbuckle like sleave, so the threaded Socket end was the only adjustment for length on that end. But I think there is sufficient threads in use.

Yeah that black piece should have the actual cable threaded into it and then the threads should be locked with the locking nuts shown in the picture above my post. Whoever you had install it may not have tightened those locking nuts down or something. Hope It stays working for you.
Thanks everyone, this community is so awesome. So to KT_987's point it looks like the install was done incorrectly around that threading in particular. Sent a picture over to Numeric and they confirmed. Vlad at Numeric was so great he even emailed me back a picture with arrows drawn on to show me how they should have been done in the first place.
It was done by a previous owner and in my 1 year of ownership and 8k+ miles I had no issues. They've probably been this way for 4+ years (need to look at my service records when I get home. Randomly went to run out to the store and car was in neutral with a floppy shifter. Here is a picture that the shop sent me when they re installed them. The shop that fixed it told me he had to really force the cups into place. I ordered another set and my Indi shop is going to replace them this week before my DE days
next
weekend.
Bit anxious at the moment, but the shop that did the fix assured me they're in really tight for now. The cups are intended for one time use, so Numeric suggested swapping when I can, which as stated will be done this week.
Let me know if anyone has any other thoughts on driving with them as is for a few more days.
Cheers
As you can see from the photo just above, the cable actually ends in that turnbuckle threaded sleave. Then there is a piece of all-thread that should be threaded into the other end of the sleave AND into the threaded Socket.
I suspect that failure of the car that had the Socket come loose from the threads was just an oversight on the installer not checking if the allthread was sufficiently deep on each end.
As for the car that the Socket popped off the ball? I don't know. That's a pretty powerful connection, although as stated, Numeric recommends only using the plastic coupler once. If for any reason you need to pop the connection, you are supposed to use a new plastic coupler.
Regardless, anything can fall at some point I guess. It could have just been bad luck. I LOVE the
Numeric shifter
/cables. It addressed my one complaint of almost every porsche. I personally don't like the vagueness of their oem shifting. I agree that on a fresh car it feels rather refined. But it's vague to me. I'm ruined by direct shifters like a current generation Miata, or the Honda S2000, or the..... Well, you get the idea.
Numeric shifting just makes me grin
