Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check spark plugs, they were all tight' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oilfilter if its metal particles in it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

*EDIT* resolved…. He skipped checking one plug and we went back after a hunch. Found a loose one! Extremely happy haha.
Hoping my video attaches here, but we are trying to investigate a friend’s ‘99 C2 where he has an audible squeak occurring from the passenger rear of the car. Seems like it’s coming from the exhaust / head / wheel well area, but we literally cannot track it down. pulled the belt off, still does it. Checked the spark plugs, they were all tight.
It only happens under a load when taking off, lightly accelerating, etc. and moves with engine RPMs.
does this sound familiar to anyone?
My 2003 996TT with 27K miles on the clock just developed an engine rattle. It's very noticeable. I shot a little video but seem not to be able to get it downloaded. What is the quickest way??
27k miles? it's barely broken in! rattles? we don't need no stinkin' rattles. but an "engine rattle"? already sounds portentous. i would want to make sure my timing chain didn't "snap" has happened before, just not to me.. or often!
Quote:
Yah, the 996tt is not prone to IMS engine failures. However, there was a recent thread on this forum re: engine rattle on the 996tt to poss IMS issues, rare and not as big a deal compared to non 996tts...
I'm sure one of the regulars on this forum who posted in said thread will chime in and offer his opinion.
Keep us posted.
do a try and use the stock headers, you will hear the noise not as loud as before....this sort of after market header amplifier the noise of the ims
check your oilfilter if its metal particles in it
wish i could suggest something useful. but that sure sounds like an ims rattle.. at least from where i'm sitting. ugh.. i feel for ya bro.
add: just found this:
996tt Intermediate shaft noise - YouTube
try a/b'ing the two vids. see what ya think.

Yep. Everything except if you are going to be the lucky one that is getting the booby price!! Some inherent engineering mistakes are haunting all of us. Yep ALL of us.
please man, don't say that
i'd be panicked if my sh*t sounded like that. i listened to both vids, and hate to say it. yours actually sounded worse, but ims related. perhaps someone more knowledgeable will listen and report. again, nothin but empathy from me man..as it sounds nearly potentially catastrophic. to my ears anyway.
btw nice exhaust note ( over the rattle! yikes ). you mind? whatsit?
Quote:
Well, this is not going to be fun for sure. I am thinking it is the dreaded timing chain problem but.. who knows.
As far as the exhaust is concerned... it's just the standard OEM set up and frankly I also think that sounds the best.. I Tried a few others but they just did not have this effortless, half-*** polite sound at idle and *****ing at 4K revs and up... But I do have some souped up turbo's etc
wow. sounds great. didnt sound stock to me. the growl of tial, no doubt.
back to problem.. my first thought was timing chain.. but i ( like many in our government ) know nothing ( and this isn't my 993 lol ) has anyone had to replace the fancy vario whatzit timing chains and did their engines exhibit these noises before they failed? that could well be the $5000.00 question. ( parts & labor ugh )or again, could in fact be the ims going. either way, does not bode well.
ps.. i think your stock exhaust has been gutted a bit.. no?
i don't know of one. again, it
reminded
me of a soundalike timing chain issue, from porsche's of the past. tensioners failed or some such. not sure about them in m96 engines. as i understand it, they do have a timing chain, but have not heard of them failing.
Hey, let me give you some great free advice. You are in Foster City. Take your car to Carlson Porsche and have CHRISTIAN listen to your motor. These guys listening on ytube ...................
.its crazy I tell you
BTW you owe me a talll beer, Mike
I have a prominent IMS rattle in my car but as far as I know, it's a pretty well known issue with the 996tt. It's annoying but normal from what everyone says.
Quote:
my biggest concern would be the sudden(?) onset of this condition. even on vid, it sounds.. well... not "normal" ims chatter
did you a/b your vid with the other one?
Quote:
Definitely similar I would say..
Now I am wondering it that could be clutch chatter instead. ie that should disappear when pressing the clutch then . Hm. will check and report later tonight
after listening a second time sounds to eratic to be inside the motor.Last 996 i heard that sounded like that had a loose flywheel/broken pressure plate.Get it to a Porsche tech .
Quote:
could be right. i would defer to you and joe here who is capable of wheelies in his turbo. better a clutch than your ims disintegrating, i would think..and yeah.. i'm not sure i would drive it either.. take it in monday. gl w it!
My timing chain broke 2 years ago at 45000. Did not sound like that before it broke.
That sounds like IMS noise.
One thing I have noticed is that the IMS noise does not seam to correlate with failure.
I would have it looked but it is probably fine.
Using mobile 1 5w40 TDT or Delvac will make it quieter.
