I've searched the forum, but can't find a step-through on removing the front bumper cover on a '08
Boxster/Cayman
. Sure hate to break off half a dozen plastic clip thangies by blindly wading into it. I have a 9500ci Escort that requires the bumper cover to come off to install, just trying to determine how much of chore it is to remove and if there are alignment issues on the re-attach? TIA. - Duane C.
It's not that bad. Give me a few minutes, I'll see what I can come up with.
I've removed the front bumper cover several times-- you don't really need to have the car on jackstands: it's easy enough to find the torx screws that need removing under the car with car on the floor. Some Tips: Start the engine and turn the steering wheel all the way right to remove the fender liner torx screws in the left wheel well. Opposite for right wheel well.
If you have headlight washers, plan to cut the hose and rejoin it later during reassembly using a piece of 1/4 inch O.D. copper tubing 2 inches long (hardware store).
There are no alignment issues on reassembly.
Thanks guys. Do you have to pull the headlights out to remove the bumper cover? Any 1-way plastic snaps or catches that break off during the remove? No headlight washers on my car, so that's a good thing.
Porsches4ed's article:
Removing Cayman S Front Bumper
would probably be of help - I'm not sure if all the fasteners on the Boxster are the same, but it should be pretty close.
You do have to remove the headlamps (use the little socket tool in your tool kit) to remove the bumper cover, mainly because there are some metal retaining tabs under the headlamps.
The trickiest part for me was disconnecting the foglamp relay on the passenger side - there is a little clip which you can release by sliding a small screwdriver between the relay and its holding mount, so that you can disconnect the relay easier - took me forever to figure that out.
Guys,
I had mine off and I didn't have any trouble with anything. The headlight washer house has a very easy disconnect that you simply squeeze, behind the driver headlamp. The wiring harness is one piece behind the passenger headlamp and it disconnects very easily.
The only thing that isn't obvious are the two slip clips that hold the bumper cover tight to the front fender between the headlamps and hood. I used a hook tool to gently pull them in toward the center. They slide right off and you're good to go.
Started doing my 9500ci install today. I went slow in order not to break off any plastics, and the sequence for the 987
Boxster
is the same as for a
Cayman
. I have 19" wheels on my car, so the front end had to be jacked up and the wheels pulled, just no room in there to get to the TORX fasteners in the wheel wells otherwise.
Thanks MIKE! The instructions you sent me were VERY helpful. I owe you one. The foglight area is different on the
Boxster
from the
Caymans
, and installing the two front shifters is easier. They bolt right into the plastic area under the fog lamps.
I elected to run my wires through the driver's side fender area and up to the firewall by the battery. MUCH easier than trying to go in - and out - of the front trunk firewall. In the 987, there is a bare hole that is plenty large near the upper shock strut mounts that will accept the wires from the radar unit and shifters.
Being in Virginia, I went for the main detector unit to go behind the bumper cover and mounted under the aluminum inner bumper. Totally concealed with the cover back on. Still have to run the wires inside the cabin and hook up everything else, but the hardest part is done.
Removing the nose is definitely time consuming and somewhat tedious, but really not that difficult. Glad the info helped. Good luck with the remainder of your project. It should be downhill from here.
Oh, except for running the wire for the rear shifter. Geez is the interior tight. I think that took me as long as the nose job.
Where did you run the rear sensor cable through on the
boxster
?
