For starters I am using the Boxster 5 speed because that is what I have and I have messaged the guy who put a 400hp Maserati engine in his Boxster and he has had no problems thrashing the guts out of it.

The suggestion I have had that I think is the most likely cause is a blown head gasket caused by the radiators that were blocked for so long.

I will be hanging on to the car until it is running, but guys have got it running with both Porsche and Audi ecu's running together and they dont need the key.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is definitely the ugliest Porsche in Australia (and possibly the world). I would like to introduce the new Home Built project car, the '98 Porsche Boxster with a host of very questionable modifications.
I have seen this thing done to 'Mum's hand me down Camry', but this was a very nice car at some stage. It had heated seats and a trip computer than my 996 never had. It currently has 115k on the clock and I tend to believe it. Under the ugliness, it looks like a reasonable car, and the k's are lower probably because it spent a lot of time off the road being 'modified'. As it is, you can't drive it for very long because the exhaust is unbearable.
My favourite is the tinted windscreen & smoky headlights (closely followed by the blocked radiator vents). If you can spare one of the stoppers or two I'd love to stick one in my turnout jacket...will make me smile every time I use it.
You could always do what I did many years ago.
When my old 911 frunk gas struts gave up the ghost I got a broom handle, painted it black and stuck a random Porsche part number sticker and emblem on it.
You'd be amazed at how many people ( and people who should know better ) asked me if it was an original part
😀
Should do that with the door stoppers
😂
One heavy braking and you might see the headlights skidding along the road in front...
And with the heavy bonnet on the front and the soundsystem in the back, you might have decent weight distrubution haha
I love it
So what are the plans for it Jeff, other than the obvious body and interior transformations required?
Given the low kms am presuming not an LS1 conversion?
I reckon this thing would be awesome fun as a cheap track car with the 2.5 and if it blows up you can then drop something else in.
Cheap Coilovers, front Camber plates (or I guess on this car just enlarge the strut slots), set of 17” wheels (cheap R Specs
😊
), brake pads and maybe some sway bars.
986 base is pretty cool as well since they are only 1250kg to start with so once you remove the spare tyre, tools and do some basic weight reduction it will end up a fair bit lighter than most other Porsche's.
I have a bunch of mods like you have suggested planned to start with keeping the basic 2.5. I have also got some power plans, and one possible one that popped up just this morning that could be extremely interesting
Yeah, Mike's build should be interesting, but I have a couple of much better options. My plan has been to fit an Audi V8, as they are cheaper than an LS and they bolt straight on to a Boxster transaxle. I believe the Boxster transaxle is actually an Audi box, and is actually the same gearbox that is in FWD A4's, just with slightly different ratio's.
Just yesterday another much more interesting possibility came up. It may be a bit more work, but it was far too good to pass up. We will see how it pans out though.
This week I dive a bit deeper in to the ugliest Porsche in Aus, now known as the Roxster, and see what I can do to get it ready for it's first track day.
Buggered rings / bore I reckon. Though that doesn’t explain why it won’t turn over. Oil starvation likely cause.
You have to pull it down. Think of the ‘unboxing’ content. You can show the viewers the notorious IMS bearing and explain why it fails. The ims in it is probably a bit dicey.
not sure about coffee table - v engines best for that. The split block might make a good tool organiser.
The suggestion I have had that I think is the most likely cause is a blown head gasket caused by the radiators that were blocked for so long. That let water into the sump, which in turn cooked the bearings and seized the engine.
Did you get to meet the person who did the tasteful modifications? Would be fascinating to understand what went through their head in blocking the radiators and affixing door wedges.
Jeff, I've never seen the inside of a Boxster head but is there enough room to weld a nut to the top of the bolt and then apply some heat to the surrounding area. That might be enough to get that bolt out.
Drilling a hole in the side of the block? Sounds like there were never plans to rebuild that engine, even if it was a simple fix
Reminded me of your dyno test on Harry, wheels rubbing........get the grinder out and cut those rear wheel lips away........balls of steel, love your work!
In this video I remove the 4.2 litre V8 engine and transmission from my 2003 Audi C5 A6, getting ready to swap it into the 'Roxster' my Porsche Boxster track car.
Being a huge Shitster fan, this will be great to follow, sounds like the standard Audi donk will out perform a hotted S3.2 straight up. Interested why you're keeping the 5 speed instead of using a Cayman S 6 Speed? And will be interesting on the weight comparison from the 2.5 to the Audi. Anyway, you go good man, give her a clean and bolt her straight in - this'll be a cinch, what could possibly go wrong!

The Boxster trans axle is physically smaller than the 915. The issue with putting that transaxle into an aircooled would be that you would need to reverse the gearing as it sits the other way around in a Boxster.
Wouldn’t it “only” be the crown wheel ?
I wonder how easy it is, if it could be done. May be a good supply/conversion for early cars if it is.
can the gearbox be run upside down?
People have done this with Subaru trans - flipped it around. At least it’s ‘in the family’, can apparently handle more HP and supply is plentiful. Might even be able to shift down without crunching. Something to ponder for another day.
Probably. I have no idea, as the internal workings of gearboxes are still a mystery to me
Yes.
@MrRPJ
had a Subaru trans the was converted to fit in the back of his LS powered 911. He did blow it up, but that was with a lot more torque going through it than your typical aircooled engine. From memory it was cheaper and stronger than buying a 915.
I did a bit of research and yes you can invert the gearbox.
Also second gear in the early Boxter is a bit fragile.
The 6 speed is stronger than the 5 speed
I did know that the 6 speed was better, but that is interesting that it is possible to flip it around.
In this episode I weigh both the old Boxster engine and the V8 I am swapping into it, to see just how much extra weight I am adding to the Roxster.
I don’t know much about vag products but in a Bmw you would need the key barrel surround, key, immobiliser, cluster and dme (computer) to get that engine to run. Otherwise if the dme talks to the key barrel and the immobiliaer then the cluster and they don’t agree they all belong to the same car no start. Maybe all this stuff has been worked out with engine swaps and coding but I would be hanging onto that body until you have the engine running in the new car. Otherwise you have to junk the factory computer amd run an aftermarket one.
I will be hanging on to the car until it is running, but guys have got it running with both Porsche and Audi ecu's running together and they dont need the key. So hopefully it whould not be too crazy.
progress is progress jeff
any thought to cutting away unnecessary rear inner sheet metal -ala 560
e.g rear luggage area and putting back a frame /extra tubing to reinforce if required
This week I get the gear linkages connected and do my favourite thing. Pull the engine out again, so I can trial fit the V8 conversion clutch and flywheel.
The last couple of weeks I
have
been playing around with the factory Audi ECU to get it running on the Roxster. This involves removing the immobiliser and lets just say it didn't go as planned.
Was watching saying ‘in-line fuse!!!’ That power pack can deliver some serious amps.
bummer! I think next time try and crack itv while it was still in the Audi.
Jeff,
Just had a look at your YouTube video.
You may have been given a few bum steers. In order to set up a working can bus and make make the ecu talk with the OBDi port you need a gateway. That part is Audi 8T0 907 468R. The A6 you got the motor from should have one somewhere behind the dash. Many manufacturers use a gateway of some description to tie up all the data processing. I have one you can have if you still want to have a go at flashing the ecu.
When I had plans of putting a Audi 3.2ltr V6 in my 944, as it was direct injection, the only cost effective solution was the Audi ecu and I found that hooking the bastard up was not that easy and hence the discovered the above gateway. Thankfully in the end the motor was toast and I went down a different track.
Also 12v anywhere near a USB port is death to the USB board which in turn will cause the laptop to not power up. Try opening it up and disconnecting that USB port and you may find the lappy will play again.
There are plenty who have done it the way I did, but the cable I bought had a chip that wasn't compatible to their software. Either way, I am going to go for a full stand alone as it will be better for future growth.
I'd like to own up to one of those questionable modifications.
I had that exact eagle sticker on the sunroof of my Mark IV Cortina as a teen.
The car in question was cream with a vinyl roof, louvres on the back window, and air horns that played La Cucaracha. The engine was so knackered it wouldn't do a skid so we'd roll it backwards down a hill near my friends house in the rain and then slam it into drive.
Ahhh, good times.
This week I go through the
process
of installing the Link ECU in the Roxster and hopefully to to explain that it is not as difficult that it would first seem.
You could use your crack lighter or the heat gun to smooth the edge of the Lexan windows, rather than sanding. Comes out smooth and clear. Not too much heat or you will cook the edge.
I haven't forgotten about the Roxster, and this week I give it a bit more love, sorting out some final niggles before giving it a quick rip to make sure we are ready for the track.
