Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Attempted to drill one out but turned out to be a risky operation.
Leading evidence: 'risky operation' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'risky operation' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check mounting bracket screws' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
One recommendation I have before putting your rack bars into full service each season, is to check the torque on all the allen bolts holding the assembly together.

Suggestion
I mount the blocks then set the whole unit on at once instead of 1 bar at a time, then the accessory.

Can't seem to upload any images for you but, I've been using a "Seasucker" rack on my 2002 Targa for a year now.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am an avid cyclist (road & mountain) and having a roof rack on my 996 would allow me to drive it more. I would not want to leave it on all the time however. Question is how long does it take to take it on and off? Looks like there are 4 designated spots for it within the roof moldings. If it is a quick on and off I may consider picking one up. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks
I don't have one, but I've been locking at getting one. There are 4 spots in the roof for it, you can flip the lids to expose them. You'll see them when you look.
I picked up a Cayman rack thinking it would fit and on that system you had to lock in place a piece and then lock the rack onto it.
Not super quick but quick enough I'd think
here's the instructions from the manual
Before you get real excited about installing the factory bike rack and Roof Transportation System, I recommend you take one initial step:
Flip open all four little flaps. Take a straight slot screw driver and remove the screw from the center of each of the plates in the middle. You must be able to remove ALL FOUR of those screws in order to mount the factory RTS. I owned four 996's. On the last two, no one could remove the screws. Couldn't even drill them out.
+1 for checking the mounting bracket screws.
I wasn't able to get mine out. Attempted to drill one out but turned out to be a risky operation.
What I ended up doing was buying new mount blocks (OEM-99680150900 -Genuine Porsche Part: ROOF RACK BRACKET 4x$57.00=$228.00) with the updated plastic screws. It wasn't such a bad job to do, but required pulling down the pillar/ceiling edge moulding to access the mounting blocks inside to un-fasten them.
I would say total time for assembly is roughly 15 minutes. I mount the blocks then set the whole unit on at once instead of 1 bar at a time, then the accessory. The system is light enough it can be handled with ease from one side. Even better if you have someone to help you.
I bought just the bike rack . Which i just found out a few months ago can be converted to a left/right configuration so bikes can be easily mounted from driver or passenger side.
One recommendation I have before putting your rack bars into full service each season, is to check the torque on all the allen bolts holding the assembly together. Seems vibrations can loosen them and cause the system to come apart (almost lost it in west Kansas). The included allen tool will fit all the bolts on the rack so adjustments can be made on the fly if it happens to become loose.
I bought mine in April 1012 and love it. A friend a I even drove mine to Colorado for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb last year. We got a lot of looks with two bikes on the roof.
Can't seem to upload any images for you but, I've been using a "Seasucker" rack on my 2002 Targa for a year now. Goes on in 2 minutes comes off in 5 seconds. $270 for a one bike set up front wheel goes in the front or back. Google seasucker.com and you'll find videos of it in action. I'll admit at first the idea of suction cups holding your bike to the roof of your car may seem unsettling but they do work.
