Hi Folks,
i am looking for a bit of advice
i am going to change my standard cd 24 in my 05 987 with sound package plus, for a double din multimedia unit.
my requirements are bluetooth, sat nav, ipod compatibility, touch screen and better sound quality.
on top of this i have a wish list of hard drive music storage and voice reconigtion although both of these could be sacrificed for superior sound quality
i have narrowed down my choice to pretty much either the alpine w505r with the d200 nav unit or the clarion max983hd.
although i have not totally discounted the pioneer bt3hdii (Z3 stateside) but it seems to me the clarion does everything it does for less money.
i did initially consider the kenwood dnx8220 (8120 stateside) but i read a few comments on the net about the sound quality not being great on these and the touch screen being a bit sluggish in its response.
has anyone got any thoughts/comments good/bad or indifferent on any of these units, or better still any links to reviews, particulary on the alpine and clarion as i am really struggling to find anything on these.
in adddition to this does anyone know a really good car audio shop in the northwest of england where the clarion and/or the alpine will be on display powered up. i have combed the manchester and surrounding area but have failed to find any working demo models of the clarion, alpine or the pioneer.
thanks

Mark Type "double din" into the search function....and you get quite a few threads....
Hey Mark, I wound up going with an Eclipse unit. Does all of the above, but some of the interfaces are a bit trying. I think if I were to redo it, I would have gone the Pioneer route. It didn't look as clean to me from an aesthetic perspective, but I think it functions a bit easier. My $.02. Brian
Hey Mark,
I know you said you eliminated from consideration, but I am having the Kenwood 8120 installed tomorrow in my 08 Cayman. Hopefully, all will go well....

If tou change your head unit would you still be able to control Bose features like the surround?
Hi Mark,
I have 2 of the Alpine units in our service trucks. They are OK. But I have a new kenwood 8120 in my Porsche and it is fantastic. By far the best on the market. All the interfaces are easy to use. The navigation is outstanding. Ipod and Bluetooth are included. It is a great unit.
2nd. I have the 8120 in my diesel Touareg and the unit has been a pleasure.
I went with the Pioneer AVIC-D3BT. Lots of guys from this forum have it installed.
I think it's great. The Nav is a little outdated now but it works a treat. The only problem is that it does not import the phonebook from my Iphone (1st gen). You can manually set six numbers on the unit which is enough to get by.
As for voice recognition, if your mobile supports voice dialing it will work via the BT of the unit. I'm sure the bt3hdii would do the same. I'm sure they had a demo model of the bt3hdii on display at our local Halfords.
I have the sound package upgrade aswell. The increase in quality with the D3 is not huge but better than the factory unit.
Hi Folks,
thanks for the replies
based on what you guys have said the kenwood is definately back in the running
so at the moment its probably between the kenwood & clarion, i have to decide if the clarions built in music harddrive and voice recognition are worth an approx £200 premium over here in england
the pioneer HD3 seems a bit pricey next to the clarion and the alpine seem to be great for sound but not so clever on the sat nav.
any more opinions/info will be greatly received. i think i will be making my purchase in the sales straight after christmas so have a week or so to make up my mind.
just in case anyone interested, i noticed one of the double din kits advertised on ebay is a bit cheaper now. down by $50 if memory serves, still not cheap but getting better!
thanks
