I recall seeing pics from here with the japanese porsche having an almost factory looking kit for the double din stereo and the install was so clean..any info?

AVIC D3 will not work with ANY Porsche factory stereo, it could REPLACE the Porsche stuff if you rip and replace but it isn't going to work "with" anything that is on the MOST fiber optic bus.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I remember a while back a few members were planning on installing the Avic D3 when it became available. Apparently its is in stores now. Has anyone tried it yet?
You can get a great deal from
Crutchfield
right now with code: 3A185. It gives you 15% off 3 or more
pioneer
items at $45 or more. I sold my Z1 and ordered a D3 from
Crutchfield
, along with the new Bluetooth adaptor,
Ipod
connection, and
sirius
satelite receiver for under $1050 shipped! I'll be doing the install myself in a couple of weeks (or sooner, depending when they get their new stock in and decide to ship me my crap). I was planning on doing an extensive article on my install so stay tuned.....
P.S. They also give you a FREE
Pioneer
backup camera. ($250 value) I already have one, so I'll probably sell it on fleabay or here maybe for $150. Which brings my total cost for Nav, Sat Radio, Bluetooth, and touchscreen interface for about $900! Add the $250 for the kit and harness and you get a grand total of a whopping $1150! Compared to the cost of
PCM
and all the other goodies, I don't know why anyone would go any other route.
Bought the
Pioneer AVIC
D3 from
Amazon
& had Best Buy installed into my
Toyota
Echo RS Hatchback with
iPod
, Back-up camera... the works. It works great. But to me, I just can't install it into my CS even though i know the
PCM
2.1 is old tech compare to the
Pioneer
. There are many posts on this matter, after thinking it over & over, I ended up buying the
PCM
2.1 with Nav from Suncoast & had Roger Jobs Porsche installed it. Never been happier, as fit & finish, operation are all Porsche. I have no regrets.

I was one of the ones gearing up for the D3... Now they're around, but it looks like I may be out of the city for the better part of 6 months, and not bringing my car with me, so I'm holding off to see what my situation is.
Rest assured, when I get it installed, pics will be posted.
To have your AVIC-D3 work with
bose
, you will have to run speaker cable from the D3 headunit to the front trunk where all the copper wiring for the
Bose sound system
originate from the amplifer. You can splice the cables there and add external amplifiers if you choose.
You may also need inline resistors or change the speaker drivers because
Bose speakers
are typically run at a very low resistance so they can market higher wattage numbers, whereas the AVIC-D3 will output at 4-ohms. There is a company in Japan that markets kits to use the AVIC-D3 with the
Bose system
. You will not be able to retain all 9 speakers or 7 channels of the system. You could retain the speakers with enough amplifiers, but the AVIC-D3 only has 4 channels, front L\R and rear L\R.
Like Ken said, MOST fiber functions will be lost, no more changing clock settings or controlling
sport-chrono
with your
PCM
and no more audio track or radio station display in your guages, you will get four dashes instead or you can go into the center stack settings and just get rid of the audio display.

A little misleading no?
OK for those without Bose....you will lose the ability to see what stations/song is currently playing. You can turn off the ---- through the cluster. Otherwise, you will get touchscreen interface/bluetooth connectivity for your phone (downloads phonebook and other data into the head-unit)/Ipod/sat radio/backup-camera in ONE unit! It's all controlled by the same touch-screen interface, can you get any more integrated than that? You can even change the start-up and desktop background picture to whatever you want (goto avic411.com for details). With a little artwork, you get the same "Porsche" at start-up and an even better background picture (the black PCM screen is a little 1980's for me) when you change it to say, a picture of your car?
Those with Bose....A little harder to install, but you still get everything and only lose the cluster display. As a matter of fact, you can find instructions here:
http://www.planet-9.com/showthread.php?t=9953
(I hope you read Japanese)
Those with PCM....this thread is not for you. Obviously, one wouldn't rip out their PCM and install an aftermarket HU if they already went and shelled out 4k for the thing.
Conclusion: (for those w/o PCM & Sports Chrono) The only disadvantage of not being able to work "with" the MOST system is losing the display on your cluster.
I forgot to mention. You can adjust the
leds
that illuminate D3 to whatever color you want. Hence, you adjust it to the same as the interior of the Cayman and you got a seemless install!!
Does anyone in US carry the custom install kit since our 987 has a weird radio shape? I recall seeing pics from here with the japanese porsche having an almost factory looking kit for the double din stereo and the install was so clean..any info? I am dying to rip out the
CDR24
since it's been acting funky lately and i am tired of single cd..
Jlam there are plenty of Z1 completed installs floating around this forum that I've posted and BB987 the Japanese company is now selling the kits on ebay for about $300, they don't have one up at this moment but here's a completed auction.

just a update for those interested......
Crutchfield
on their site has a determined arrival date for their new stock. It's this Friday!!! I actually called to see if I could get it over-nighted so I could do the install this weekend, (I know a lot of you are waiting with me here) so I could finally get some pics up. It was a "no-go". So I guess next weeked it is! Anyway...I doubt they'll be giving away the free camera and the 15% discount for too long after they actually have the items in stock!

Installer Said Stay Away from Pioneer
I just ordered the D3 and spoke to my installer here. He warned me that he has already had several D3 in for service. Has anyone felt the same reliability concerns from other posts re the D3. And, Pioneer?
Please advise,
-Steve
Stevie,
There are a few issues on avic411.com with D3's but they're all pretty minor and very isolated... did your installer say what the issues he was having with the units were?
- Suneet
Suneet,
Not one particular area but multiple and, he gave no specific examples. I told him that I was sceptical of his report as the D3 has just come out. He said that they've been out since Dec. Is he handing me a load? After all, he is strong Alpine dealer and was originally talking me into the W-200.
-Stevie
I don't think you'll have any issues with the D3. If you get a defective unit,
crutchfield
will replace it without any shipping charges, and then after that you still have a warranty. The issues on Avic-411 seem to be specific car related, ie.
Bose system
in GM's having ground loop issues, thump in
harman kardon
Saab cars when the unit turns on. Also, one person who reported that protected AAC files do not play very well through the
ipod
connection.
Also, a few people have said navigation routing doesn't always report the shortest route or sometimes skips an exit; but a lot of these problems arise from low satellite reception as well; and of course the database is always improving.
I'm envious though, from everything I've read the D3 is a champ at a beggar's price point, I paid $600 for my
PCM
and $400 for the Dension, and I get
iPod
, Satellite Radio, and a screen, but no nav and no dvd playback and no back-up camera and no bluetooth and the list goes on...
- Suneet
Are any of you guys installing the
pioneer
selling your
PCM
? Send me a PM with price. I have a Boxster and don't want to risk installing a
Pioneer
so some turd can cut my top and steal it.
Hi all,
Here are shots of a
Cayman S
we recently installed in collaboration with a customer. The installation was done on a
Bose
equipped vehicle.
