Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Should cost between $500-1000 to repair based on receipts i have seen.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Close to buying a 2004 996TT w/manual transmission and have the following questions which I hope someone could help with.
When the car is not running the clutch pedal is very stiff and requires some effort to depress. As soon as the car is started the power assist appears to be working correctly and the clutch is much easier to depress. After shutting the car off the clutch is back to being stiff.
My questions:
a) Is this expected when the car is not running? (car has been sitting for a while)
b) Is there a clutch assist when idle (failed nitrogen sphere? failed spring?)
I've looked at some parts lists and nothing is jumping out at me.
Thanks
A stiff clutch pedal is an indication that the clutch is well worn. I dont know if that fact is running or not. There is an assisting spring somewhere around the pedal which may have been removed. There was a fad about 2 years ago on the 996 board when some owners did remove that assisting spring for some unknown reason. You may be looking at one of those cars that the spring was never returned to it's rightful position before selling the car. Check on the cruise control. Is that working correctly.
If the clutch is difficult to depress when the car is off in a 996tt you have a failing clutch slave cylinder. Its a known and frequent problem. Should cost between $500-1000 to repair based on receipts i have seen. If the spring is failing you will hear the clutch make a creaking sound when depressed. I would bet its the slave cylinder. Try depressing the clutch multiple times when the car is off. If it gets more difficult then that's the problem.
TT have a vacuum servo that helps with the clutch much like power brakes. It sounds like it may not be holding vacuum for long after shutdown. Post this Q on the turbo forum to see what the consensus is. it might be normal.
EDIT:
Evidently not normal and not vacuum assisted. (I am learning) See this thread from the turbo forum:
