Made some shims from 1/8" aluminum plate i had, U-shaped, slipped in drom above [iirc!] so they wouldn't fall/rotate out once things were tightened back down.

I checked the shifter assembly for play on a bench when I had it out and it seemed to have very minimal (if any) play in it.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm not sure if this is the right section for this, it's a problem/complaint but it's an issue with a modification (shifter cable upgrade) please, if I am wrong here, move this to the correct location.
Long story short, the stock cables broke, upgraded to
Numeric Racing cables
. The shifter had slight play before and after install.
My my question is this - would upgrading the shifter assembly cure this issue? I checked the shifter assembly for play on a bench when I had it out and it seemed to have very minimal (if any) play in it. The car has 66,000kms.
I Have taken some video of the issue showing that there is play at the transmission linkages. This is where my excessive play seems to be coming from. Can anyone confirm theirs was the same or is mine worn out? I find it hard to believe a shifter assembly would remove play from this particular location.
Or perhaps I installed them wrong, there is that possibility, maybe I need to shorten the cables so that they are pulling slightly on the linkage? If the aftermarket shifter has a centering spring maybe that then would be able to cure this. It's not BAD, it shifts fine but it feels awful.
Part 1: shifter play at console
Part 2: shifter play at linkage
And if you get this resolved, please post back on the solution.
I have my
Numeric cables
in the box, waiting on all of the resources to come together. I am refurbing and installing a
Porsche
OEM Carbon fibre center console and short shifter when I do mine.
Good luck!
The cable end-cups are threaded, turn them one way, they lengthen, the other, shorten ...
I put quite some time into getting the shifter feel right, after the initial install by an indy shop. When i first got the car back it felt like it was just barely making it into 1st on a full forward shift. Likewise 2,4,6 felt like they were too far forward.
I wanted to lengthen a cable, only to run out of threaded rod the little cup screws into. I ended up shimming / indexing the cables where they attached to a bracket near the transmission.
Made some shims from 1/8" aluminum plate i had, U-shaped, slipped in drom above [iirc!] so they wouldn't fall/rotate out once things were tightened back down.
This located the cable rearward at the bracket and put the shift pattern back where it belonged. I haven't thought about it since, except when reading posts about
numeric cables
.
They could do a little better in terms of providing more length adjustment, as well as a little variability where they tie to the cable mounting brackets.
I also threw some
lithium
grease on the little linkage atop the transaxle which helped.

Found the videos, it looks like the adjustments were only to set the shifter forward or back. I'm going to take them off and check the rear ones, maybe they've got too much slack. That
numeric racing shifter
looks like it's so precise though it almost makes want to order it even if I don't need it.
If you drive a 987 with properly set up
Numeric shifter
and cables, it will ruin you for anything else.
The comparison that comes to mind is the action of a handmade 1911 pistol. Precision and singular purpose.
I didn't buy the car that I drove with the
Numeric
kit, but now that i have a stock
Cayman
, I must replicate that feeling.
I have both the
Numeric cables
and shifter they are very high quality. The feel and throw of the combination of shifter and cables are second to none. I had a factory short shifter and the longest throw of the
Numeric shifter
is a about the same as the factory short shifter. Numerics customer and technical service is first class. I would highly recommend their products for anyone looking to upgrade from the factory shifter and cables.

There's no doubt it's worth the money, in fact I'm not at all worried about spending the $900+ on it. What I don't want, is to buy it and then find out it has just as much slop because it's the linkage on the transmission that is the cause.
That said, I've got one in my online shopping cart right now, just waiting on a few more replies to see if anyone can confirm that their transmission (not shifter) has the same amount of play in it.
Just for grins, why not put the car up on a lift, or jackstands. Find the cables attachment
points
on the transmission and disconnect them. move the transmission's actuators by hand. You'll feel just how little slop there is in the transmission.
And, look for installation errors of the cables: not tight on their brackets ...
Then start with tearing down your center console and *look* at your shifter ... lots of room for slop. Likewise, look for mistakes.
Try a used factory short shifter for starters -- NineApart treated me well on an engine purchase and are in Canada.
mmmv,
-PM.
The slop you see in the video under the car is the same slop without the cables attached. That's what I'm asking, is that normal? a
Porsche
tech said it was normal and not to worry but I'm not sure I beleive him.
Did anyone find a cause for this? I have a
987.2
with
numeric cables
and an upgraded shifter. There is zero play in the shifter or cables and the cables are properly adjusted: the side-side play is definitely in the transmission like in Carter’s videos.
Its not not a big deal, but it seems like it’s more than I’ve seen in other
Caymans
and it would be nice to sharpen it up a bit.
