Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can anyone describe what the symptoms would be if I had faulty coilpack(s) on my '98 996? At present, it pulls OK up to about 60mph, then feels a bit rough. Doesn't want to know after about 115mph (on the track of course, :cop: ...) Struggling to get an exact diagnosis with the OBD reader - just wondering if anyone has had these symptoms, Cheers

POST 2Original post

The most common symptom is a misfire under load What you describe could be any manner of things most likely it's a could pack or a plug, but equally could be MAF problem

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've tried new plugs and it hasn't improved - sorry, should have said. OBD reader is saying misfire in cylinders 5 & 6 but doesn't pinpoint the coilpacks. If it were the MAF sensor, would the OBD see a misfire in all cylinders? Thanks

POST 4Original post

No, a MAF wouldn't cause a misfire on two cylinders. The fact that it is two cylinders (not a whole bank) means it is most likely coil packs. What did they look like when you changed the plugs? You can usually see the insulation cracking or flaking.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looked OK I thought, but didn't really have much of a close look to see if there was cracking - thought all the guts were hidden inside :?

POST 6Original post

The visible insulation can crack and break down, and you get tracking between coil and earth. Sometimes it gets bad enough to be visible in the dark, so you could try looking underneath at night to see if you can see any flashing on coils 5 and 6.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks very much, I'll try that :worship:

POST 8Original post

Odd that you say it pulls fine up to 60mph though - in my (limited) experience a coil pack problem would be manifest at low speeds too. Less so at idle, but with two coils misfiring you would surely notice a roughness and reluctance to pull as soon as you started to pull away from standstill. By the way, don't be tempted to drive it too much if it is misfiring, if you let too much unburnt fuel get into the cat you have a big bill inbound.

POST 9Original post

I recently had 2 coil packs replaced and the cars much better. The symptoms were rough idling (+/-100 rpm which is not much but more than normal) and erratic acceleration, it felt like a dead spot on occasion too. The car would keep accelerating but ran out of puff far earlier than usual. If it's always the same 2 cylinders then it's almost definitely the coil packs or even the new plugs you've fitted. Everything else involved, ignition, intake etc, would produce a more general fault ranging across all cylinders. Good luck !
