Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I called Garmin and instead of sending the unit in to be repaired (actually replaced with a remanufactured one identical (?) to it) I got 50% credit (up to $75) to towards the purchase of a new unit.
Leading evidence: 'Repair (actually' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair (actually' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I use a cheap portable Garmin, which works surprisingly well on log trips.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had a magellan before that and that worked pretty good too...no customising tho.
My cars have nav, but I usually keep a portable GPS around for use in rental cars ... my last couple have been refurbished Garmins. I like the models with Bluetooth, which comes in handy in rental cars. My current unit has a 5" screen and IIRC was ~$120 with lifetime maps. I had to install the last map update on a Micro SD card, but it works OK.
Had a Garmin (Nuvi 14xx) and its electrical connector got flaky. I called Garmin and instead of sending the unit in to be repaired (actually replaced with a remanufactured one identical (?) to it) I got 50% credit (up to $75) to towards the purchase of a new unit.
I bought a unit that cost around $150. (The older unit cost IIRC around $170 and that was on sale.)
However, I made sure this time to get the life time maps feature.
The new Garmin unit (52LM IIRC) is not quite as nice as the old unit. It is missing the brushed alum. frame about the LCD. It doesn't give me a report of distance traveled, etc. when I shut the unit off. Also, the LCD seems to reflect more light at night than the old one.
For my Boxster I have a Tom Tom -- do not know what model # -- that my sister gave me. It works ok but the window suction cup sucks, well, make that it doesn't suck, and the unit won't stay on the glass very long and I haven't had time to get a better window mount and I really haven't used it much.
I'd say one from either maker would be ok. I do not need BT nor traffic updates. Lifetime maps and a big non-reflective display with a non-reflective frame around the LCD are important features.
Got a newer tomtom with north america and mexico maps with unlimited map updates. Has some neat learning update features and only steered me wrong once. Very customisable.

Id get another of either
FWIW, Groupon currently has the Garmin nvi 40LM (4.3" screen, lifetime maps) for $53. Pretty hard to go wrong at that price:

Is this the guy that's also looking for an extra 6 disc cd changer magazine? Lol
J/k Zannzibar.
Google maps on my smartphone has worked the best for me so far.
I use the Garmin 660 from my BMW R1200RT (don't think you would want to buy one of these). I also have the MapQuest app on my iPhone that works pretty decent.
I use a cheap portable Garmin, which works surprisingly well on log trips. I may go to an in-dash double DIN at some point, but this portable unit suffices, for now.
It's nice to have in the desert southwest where you're in the middle of nowhere, and you want to locate options for fuel and whatnot.
No smart phone for me. I have a cheapo Tracfone.
A co-worker who I give a ride to the BART station once in a while has a smart phone and he has a heck of a time deciphering the traffic conditions as we drive along.
Given how it works for traffic updates I suspect I'd kill myself trying to use it for navigation purposes.
Yes it will. Learn how to use the iPhone and YOUR brain. There are NAV apps that do not need to be connected to a network. Google maps also has a caching feature that doesn't require active network connection. If you're still using the native Apple maps app, don't be surprised if it has you going in circles or direct you off the road.
^^^This, there are plenty of smartphones out there which do not require a network to function. As long as you have the maps on the device, the built in GPS receiver will take care of the rest.
I know this works on my Lumia 1020 but I just tried it on my iPhone 5S which I have never used for GPS before. I downloaded SYGIC with offline maps for the Middle East and switched the WiFi off, it has no sim as I only use it for music. Inside the apartment, nothing, outside on the balcony got a good position within 2 minutes. Position lost as soon as I came back in through the french doors.
Definitely works without any kind of network connection.
