Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • 911uk: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Just picked up my new car today, and after a long journey back home left it ticking over on my drive for a while. I noticed that i could hear a rattle comming from the centre. Turns out it's the intermediate shaft rumbling. The dealer informed me it's normal on turbo models. Can anyone shed any light or am i facing a HUGE repair bill

POST 2Original post

Normal, intermediate gear 'chatter' - dont worry!

POST 3Original post

Might be normal for porsche but doesn,t sound normal to the rest of us!Got to admit mine purrs on tickover ,that usual 3.6 groan.Anyway like the man said, don,t worry

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i have been told that it is the bearing that fails causing the shaft to move slightly. Can the bearing (if this is what causes it) be replaced ???

POST 5Original post

Hi There Recently the Intermediate Drive failed on my 996 C4S Cab - 2004 & 47k. New engine fitted £13,800 so get it checked out very carefully and make sure you have a warranty that covers you for this......

POST 6Original post

I thought the TT engine bottom end is based on the original 3.6 as is the GT3 and is relatively indestructable, especially compared with the time bomb in my 3.4!!

POST 7Original post

Even rebuilt engines with new bearings can still rattle - so IMHO it is not a sign of impending failure and can be ingnored especially as it will cost no more to rebuild if it did fail than doing it beforehand only to find it is still noisy. Baz

POST 8Original post

yep rattles on mine as well and just about every one I've heard... good excuse for an exhaust system and to get a warranty for peace of mind

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all...Put my mind at rest...It is not a bad rattle and i have been told NOT to use the 0W-30 oil. Best to put in a 10W-40.. What oil do you run in your cars and does the 10-40 oil muffle the noise a bit. Thanks

POST 10Original post

Hi Mate try 15w 50 next time your oil is due a change does, quieten things down a bit, have sent you a PM with a thread on another forum thats worth a read...as I said previously don't worry.

POST 11Original post

Sorry to hear, hope you are enjoying the car now you've had it fixed but different engine on a Turbo, and they have a tendancy to sound a bit rattly on tickover

POST 12Original post

Blimey, what did you have done to cost £14k, that's way more than a new engine!

POST 13Original post

Not too well up on turbos but I thought the bottom end was based on the old air cooled GT2 (or was it GT1) engine and as such didnt have an intermediate shaft in the way ordinary 996 owners know and love (to hate) Intermediate gear shaft rumble I can understand and is present in lots of cars at idle. Anyone know for sure...just interested.

POST 14Original post

It's based on the GT1 engine. This is what the intermediate shaft looks like:

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When this shaft fails, what damage does it do...ie Is it like if a cambelt goes? With many people saying leave it until it needs doing.. Thanks
