I was in pretty much the same situation as ourself, I wanted a 996tt but had no idea what to look out for etc...I was told by lots of people to carry out a Porsche Pre-Purchase Inspections (PPI) which cost me roughly £140 which is a 2hr thorough check of the whole car...my PPI even told me that the car had a re-map, sports exhasut and was a X50 model which was good as majority of things such as gear boxes were tougher.
Leading evidence: 'best car ever' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best car ever' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check of the whole car...my ppi even told me' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Is there anybody to recommend me to buy 996TT rationally in my condition?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello
I'm planning to buy a 911 Turbo (996) but because of its age, I have some doubts. It's 2001, Black, at 90k KMs, Tiptronic. It's said to be clean, no painted parts nor part changes. Will its gear-box cause troubles? Any chronical problems? I don't want any extra costs, is it stable? I want to have Evotech remapping, max. power goes up to 470 HP, has anyone had it? Do you recommend any power tunes? I have another option; 2009 TTS quattro S-Tronic at 24k KMs White. Which one shall I prefer?
Thx..
If you don't want any extra costs, don't buy a used car!
Why are you thinking of a remap if you are short of money? A standard 911 Turbo will make the Audi feel very slow, so why would you need the extra performance if you are also considering the TTS?
A 911 Turbo is a very complex, high performance car that cost well over 100,000 Euros when it was new: Repairs and parts are very expensive (I am about to find out how expensive when I get mine back from Porsche Rouen, after my water pump failed on the way back from Le Mans!)
I think you need to be realistic, we all hope when we've bought our cars that they're going to be reliable... and with the best intentions and advice we research and get then inspected, etc... but the reality is that as a 9 year old car sure as eggs are eggs something will need some attention at some stage. And from experiance things are not cheap... just check out my recent threads. But if you can live with that and go into the purchase with that understanding and acceptance... then the 911 turbo ownership will reward you with an experiance that you won't forget...
+1 spot on
Also agree with wattie, why do you need a remap if the other car you are considering is an audi tt - buy a car that you have had inspected and have the report map out approximate expenditure over say 12 months - once your comfortable with the potential outlay and you are sure that the car has all the bases covered then consider mods such as mapping, on another point modification is highly addictive so if you are considering other items such as exhaust, filters, dv's etc you'll be better getting these items done first so that it can be mapped accordingly.
Hi mate,
I was in pretty much the same situation as ourself, I wanted a 996tt but had no idea what to look out for etc...I was told by lots of people to carry out a Porsche Pre-Purchase Inspections (PPI) which cost me roughly £140 which is a 2hr thorough check of the whole car...my PPI even told me that the car had a re-map, sports exhasut and was a X50 model which was good as majority of things such as gear boxes were tougher. I seriosuly suggest you get one of these and if you are worried about massive bills then get a decent warranty "warrantydirect" quoted me full cover for £905 a year which incl unlimted labour rates etc...
P.s forget the Audi mate, I know the zee German's build them but a 911 Turbo is miles and miles better when you press the loud pedel
Cheers
This is my take on your choices
The audi is a great competent car, newer and reliable looks OK and will serve you well and will depreciate like hell ... you will enjoy looking at it but its just an A4 made to look nice.
The porsche will be endless bills... the odd breakdown but looks fantastic and drives like the audi never will... when you lock the doors of your house you will look out the window at the porsche and it will make you smile as every day you own it it will give you pleasure that the audi never could. This comes at a price but its worth every penny...
Driving the porsche you can feel the pedigree of years of refinment making it a absolute treat on a A or B road it amazing... but motorways are better suited to the audi.
I had an S2 quattro when they first came out paid 38k for in back in 1996 thought it was the best car ever... had about everything since then thought i get a porsche after a year with a 350Z another reliable component based car... In the end I could not be bothered to wash or polish it as the 350 was a Nissan and just didnt have that something just like the Audi... I polish the porsche almost daily the cars mint and provides total pleasure every day... would i swop for an audi.... No chance.... plus i will kick its arse big style on a twisty fast B road or tight A road whilst the audi lumbers about the nimble porsche race track pedigree will just kick its lilly whilte arse with no effort at all...
If its your only car get the audi.... if you have two cars get the porsche.... and enjoy hope this helps
Phil
I was at Oulton park a couple of weeks ago, and a Nissan rep was trying to sell me a 370Z (they had a couple on display). I was impressed with what you get for your money, but when I told him I had a 911, he gave up straight away and told me to forget it. He said the Nissan would never be as good as the Porsche.
I think it will be the same with the Audi.....
First of all, thanks for all replies..
The second, I don't understand that anger? Shame on me, I wanted to compare a TTS vs. 996TT! Such a big shame! :nooo:
Well, the point is.. I compared them for the age and the technology. Model 2001 doesn't have a PDK! There passed 9 years over it was produced and I will drive this car about a 800 KMs away from an official service, it is overseas and I can take the car twice a year to my homeland.. If it breaks down, then that will cost me a lot more than anyone else because no mechanic has experience of a Porsche and I can't trust a mechanic who usually fixes €5k cars! 996TT can never be compared with a TTS for sure but because it is new and will cause less trouble risks, I had to think of it too.. Whether I buy the 996tt or TTS, the first thing I will do is remapping from Evotech, not short for that.. Have you had or heard any problems of Evotech?
I know the feeling to have a Porsche, it is my dream, one of my friends has just got a white 997.2TTS PDK, I can just say woow! Here, I am just asking shall I postpone buying a Porsche in this condition and buy a TTS or buy it? How frequent it causes troubles? Will it be my luck? You are Porsche owners, I know you have lots of things to say, please share them with me..
Even though I would have the Porsche anyday any time, the OP does have a point (which he didn't make clear at the beginning) regarding servicing/fixing/issues and other problems. With the newer car he can just go back to the Audi dealership and get it remedied; not so with the 996. In this case I would take the Audi; imo the TTS version doesn't look that bad - nicer than the cooking TT versions. However, I would say to the OP to try and find a Porsche specialist first and then buy the Porsche.
Surely the Evotech guys who will do your re-mapping must know of others in the trade that can look after Porsches? They may even be able to offer you this service anyway.
~ Maxie
Evotech remapping will be done before I take the car away, so that way also won't work.. I wish I could afford a 997 C2/C2S/C4/C4S/TT.. But a TTS is almost the same amount of money of a 996TT..
Is there anybody to recommend me to buy 996TT rationally in my condition?
BTW, today I found another 996TT which is manual, at 45k KMs (I don't know if it is the original meterage), 2001, Silver, GMG remapped (480 HP), GMG Exhaust, GMG Headers, that made me more confused! I had the biggest trust problem about the gear-box, a 9-year-old tiptronic gear-box on a 996TT sounds like a potential problem to me, with this one it seems I passed over that problem.. But still waiting some experience to be shared here about the problems you've faced since you purchased yours.. Will it leave me in the lurch?
Sorry, but I think your obsession with remapping is ridiculous... If you are worried about reliability and unforseen costs, whichever car you buy should be kept standard and with the best warranty cover you can find.
If you remap either, forget any ideas of 'goodwill' contributions from the manufacturer if you should experience a major problem and even if you can find a warranty that will cover a modified car, expect them to argue that the modification caused the failure and therefore they won't pay out.
As I said before, if you would be happy with the performance of the Audi, there is absolutely no need to touch a 996 Turbo to be much quicker in just about any driving circumstance that you could possibly encounter.
So let me get this right. You are considering buying a 9 year old supercar with 90k kms on the clock and dont want any costs to run it.
Forget it.
Great as the turbo is it WILL cost a good deal to run and anything that goes wrong will be expensive.
Oh, and you then want a 470 bhp remap on the nine year old supercar with 90k kms which will only hasten its demise through extra stresses.
All in all IMHO I feel you might be better suited to the Audi.
