Did a search, but not sure if my car's symptoms really match the other posts...
When the car is first started for the day (warm or cold weather - 40s-80s), I hear a ticking sound that only occurs between 2000 and 2200 RPMS. this happens for about 5-10 minutes until the car is warmed up and in every gear. If I move out of that RPM range the sound goes away...come back into the range and it starts back up.
I described to my dealer (didn't do it when I was there) and he said it was likely a release valve that protects the engine while it is cold. My warranty is up in Feb. 2010, so I probably should just leave it at the dealer over night and have them check it out. Just wanted to get some opinions before it goes in.
Thanks.
No one else has this problem? Anyone?

Thanks for the suggestions....I had already read almost all of them. However, the Clicking Sound from the Rear is the only thread that sounds similar to my situation. It is also the only one that references a specific RPM range.
I guess I will just schedule an appointment with my dealer. I already predict that they will say it is normal as that is what they indicated when I described it to them earlier. It appears some dealers have replaced the oil relief valve for some customers...maybe I can reference posts here to encourage them to do something.
I am almost out of warranty (Feb. 2010) and don't want to take any chances. At the least, I want to get the issue documented with the dealer in the event it causes problems down the road.
I still welcome any input from others who have also had this issue.
AFAIK, the oil relief valve makes a different sound - there were lots of them replaced early-on with the '06 and some '07 cars. they make kind of a scratchy/screechy noise. This is probably noisy lifters - I've seen/heard many, many of cars with them, especially when they're first started - it can take a while to get the cold/thick oil into the tiny lifter passages - and they seem to not do much harm. Mine does it sometimes. make sure you;re sing 0w-40, this has been known to happen with 5w-40. I've heard other tech experts say it can happen more with dirty oil, and if it gets really bad/loud then it's usually the VarioCam actuator.

I had the pressure relief valve replaced in my previous 05
Boxster
. It made the strangest sound but not a ticking sound as indicated. My Cayman ticks for about 15-30 seconds when started cold.
Thanks guys. Appreciate the help. I'm going to make an appointment today...better safe than sorry.
It is strange that the ticking sound is limited to such a narrow RPM range. Whether it is the lifters or the valve, I'm hopeful that my dealer can fix it as it just doesn't sound right for a 70k car.
+1 on the lifter diagnosis. These are hydraulic lifters that are very small and light to allow high RPM running and they take a couple minutes to work right. My '95 M3 engine had some of the first ones and they made really big ticking noises for the first 10 minutes or so of driving. I used 15W50 in that engine. 0W40 really improves things. This sounds pretty normal to me, but I can't really hear it.
You want to hear ticking noises, remove the carpet from your engine cover!!! You'll find a host of them along with intake noises. What you're hearing is probably a little of the lifter noise that gets through the insulation because of it's location on the engine....maybe one or two valves on one cylinder.
Even 70K cars are still just cars. It really sounds to me like lifters that are still cold.
Wanted to update the thread....I picked the car up tonight. The problem was a faulty oil relief valve. It was replaced under warranty and doesn't appear to making the noise anymore. Will know for sure on the next cold start. Thanks for the help.
