The battery is dead on my '05 and I thought I would just plug the
Porsche
trickle charger (the cheaper version that costs around $55) into the cigarette lighter or the passenger side power socket. Well, after a couple days of "charging" (red light is on at the charger), the car is still totally dead. And, of course, the key is still stuck in the ignition. Does the car not accept a charge through the power sockets if the key is in there?
It looks like I have to hook up a separate battery to the red contact inside the fuse box to get the hood open and charge the battery directly. If I then hook up the
Porsche
battery to a regular tender (not
Porsche
, but a Schumacher 2 amp/6 amp), do I run the risk of frying the electricals?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
If your battery is truly dead, a trickle charger is not going to bring it back - you need a real charger to give it 24 hours or so of a good 10-amp charge. You need to open the front hood - by either having another battery or using jumpers from another car... then you need to either charge the existing battery with a real charger, or get a new battery. The charger may not bring the battery to life, in which case, you'll need to buy a new one. The trickle charger will probably not bring the battery back even if hooked up directly to the battery - you need a proper battery charger in this case.

Not shure which charger you are using but the
Porsche
one states that it is designed to maintain and condition a battery and NOT to recharge a dead battery. That may be the case with yours
Thanks to both of you. I used the regular charger to pop the hood and re-charge the battery. I'm back in business. (Now, I just need to get the "PSM failure" message off the screen, which I understand will go away after a few miles of driving.)
I think only the socket in the center console will work. Which one were you using?
The cig lighter and the center console plug will accept the trickle charger but a trickle charger (battery maintainer) will not charge a dead battery no matter what plug is used.
You know, it's great to hear of a good outcome from someone wrestling with the battery thing. Thanks for reporting back, and congratulations!

So is the consensus the
Porsche
trickle charger WILL NOT work in the passenger footwell port?? If the light comes on Id think it would be working?
On another note, my
Porsche
trickle charger will not come on in my 930 at all unless the key is in the ignition and switched to accessory power. And leaving my keys in the car is a total non-option. So Im glad it at least works in a
Cayman
.
The someof the CTEC chargers come with clips to attach directly to a battery so they should work with the 930. They also have units to charge more than one car at a time. Their unit looks a lot like the
Porsche
one so they may be the OEM supplier for
Porsche
The current rating of the fuse and wiring for the circuit that the cigarette lighter socket is on is higher than the one in the passenger footwell. (See the pamphlet in the fuse box.) Presumably there is less chance of setting the car on fire using the recommended socket.
