Just a heads up on checking your belts and pulleys.
I was about to go to a car meet yesterday morning when after I started my car, my steering felt heavy and the warning light came on about Battery/ Alternator check. Opened the rear access panel and saw that my belt came off. Checked all the pulleys and everything "seemed" ok. I had an old belt to try to put on to see if anything was wrong and found out that the Alternator pulley "slid" forward, became misaligned and therefore throwing the belt off.
I ordered a new pulley and belt and will replace it when it gets here. Just a heads up and check your belts once in a while. I replaced mine at 60k per the required maintenance -I'm at 95k mi now.
Just curious if anyone has had the same problem.
I replaced mine 3 weeks ago. I only found out when I saw on my car DVR that my car was running at 11.8V, 11.2v when engine is off. replaced the pulley and everything was fixed. back to 13.2v when running. ( but i think it is still a bit low?)
my pulley still looked like new when i replaced. not even close to what your pulley looks like haha.
I replaced it today. It took some time as I had to soak the old one with WD40 as it would not budge. Its pretty straight forward but you need a special tool for it. As you can see, the inner mechanism failed and the top piece broke off which caused it to slide forward.
Gates the manufacturer suggested to replace it whenever you replace the belts as a precaution. Its only $50 bux so its not bad for a piece of mind.
hey olivertan, what were the symptoms you had before you decided to change? is it only low voltage?
mine is a
987.2
and running is 14.2v according to my OBD meter.
shifterkartracer, is this accessible & replaceable from the panel behind the seats?
and thanks for sharing...
i had low voltage. car was running at 11.8v when engine is on, and 11.3 when engine off. so i figured the alternator wasnt charging the battery.
the problem now is that without any load to the battery, i measure the alternator at 14v. but when its loaded, the voltage is now at only 12.5 to 13v , is this normal?
