Hey everyone,
I purchased a 987 on Friday, got it for a great price but knowing there were a few minor issues that I would have to deal with. I
think
I have an idea of what might be behind the problems but i was hoping i could get some confirmation or advice before I start doing anything.
1. The shifter knob has movement when the clutch engages in 1st through 3rd. It does not seem like a problem with the clutch as shifting is smooth, there's no slipping, and it does not pop out of gear. To me this seems like it could be the motor and/or transmission mounts. Is there anything else that could cause this?
2. The steering wheel shakes a little bit when I'm at full lock and
not
moving. This does not appear to be due to the Ackermann effect since it happens when the car is stationary. Would this indicate the power steering pump might be bad? Or a fluid issue? The steering wheel also seems a bit heavy at low speeds but I'm not sure if that's normal for Porsche power steering.
3. And finally, the idle is a little bit irregular when I first turn on the A/C. It will go up ~100 RPM and then back down to normal 3 or 4 times before it settles at normal and stays there. The car has no idle issues otherwise. I'm not very familiar with A/C components, so what should I be looking at here?
Thanks in advance for any help/ideas!!
Sorry. Im no help here.
Looks lto me like u r looking for problems that dont exist.
#2 and #3 sound pretty normal to me. I never go to full lock on any steering.
Not sure about shifter movement.
People say the clutches and steering r heavier on these cars.
I think u r good to go.
Check your power steering fluid level. It's a 5 min job that takes 30 min in a Boxster. Because it's such a pain to check, most ppl don't and drive around on low fluid.
NOTE: If you're new to Porsches, they generally
don't
run garden variety fluids. NEVER just add the requisite fluid you have on your shelf unless you're sure it's the proper fluid for a Porsche. Power steering fluid included. It should be Pentosin brand fluid. Antifreeze needs to be phosphate free, etc. Putting the wrong fluid in can be disastrous.
i'm no expert either but these are my thoughts on the subject.
1) Your motor/trans mount suggestions are one place to look. Also the shift cables might be slightly "out of alignment". Its a pretty simple procedure, but you will need a special alignment tool (only a couple bucks). Basically, disconnect shift cables, align shifter with tool, re-connect shift cables.
2) I agree with husker... check fluid level. Pump is still spinning even though you aren't moving... which may bring up the point of "did the previous owner install an underdrive pulley?". The weight of PS is a little heavier than most cars, but does a great job staying consistent through rapid steering changes.
3) Is the AC plenty cold? If you struggle to get nice cold air, maybe you're low on Freon? As long as you have cool air... I wouldn't worry about it.
