On the flip side the paint is far from perfect, and I replaced the tires.

it come down to the upgrades, over all condition; belief in the previous owner/records, it was always a California car (shipped to me in Florida) which to me meant no salt/snow/rust concerns; clean carfax, pre purchase inspection (california) post inspection by my mechanic (florida); all maintenance records (religious oil changes etc) from the original dealer, new clutch, new tires, 19" Work wheels, factory aero kit, H&R Coilovers, 500watt Apline Amp/receiver/cd changer/JL Audio speakers, super clean paint and interior....and I am the second owner.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What would be an exceptable asking price for an 03 with 37,000. Brand new Upgraded RMS, Brand new LN Engineering IMS, Brand new tires, Fresh Oil Change, Fresh Brake Bleed. All with less than 100 miles on everything that's new. 80% remaining on pads, 85% remaining on clutch. Car is pristine condition.
Thanks for suggestions.
keep in mind that new parts, maintenance items, upkeep doesnt make a car neccesarily worth more, but worn parts, lack of maintenance and poor upkeep makes it worth less......
wow... everyone is on the IMS bearing bandwagon.... good strategy before the sell. This will be a new chapter in the 996 prices with these mods (for the educated of course).
Mileage means a lot with Porsche values. Excellence prices seem to work well for higher mileage cars. There are only two (out of 116) Mk 2 996s listed nationwide on cars.com with <40k miles for <$30k.
The nice ones are worth more. You just need to find a buyer who's looked at a few ratty ones first.
And I'd be willing to bet you could get almost 100% payback for the IMS upgrade, assuming the buyer knows anything about anything.
That is a nice car in a popular color in good condition with low miles. I would start around $32.5 and see where that gets you. You can always lower the price or negotiate down.
You might also look into having your local dealer or a higher end private dealer consign the car for you. Used car values are climbing and dealers are looking for nice, low mileage cars. They can charge more - and they can package a warranty into the financing. And even if you don't make any more money, at least you don't have to do all the paperwork, phone answering, and test-driving. It is one thing to find a private buyer who wants a 7 year old Porsche. It is another to find a private buyer with the cash or credit to spend $30k+.
Yeah, Excellence permits a 10% bump for low mileage cars and this is definately a low mileage car.
It is amazing how many 996s are on autotrader.com for ridiculous money.
$50k for a 40k mile 2003 C4S? not this year buddy.
What's more interesting is the sleazo-dealer cars ASKING low $30s. As I posted before, there may never be a better time to commission an agent to hit Manheim for you. If the dealers are asking that low, the auction prices must be amazing.
Here is an example of a nice, relatively low mileage '03 996 at a dealer - at a higher initial asking price than a private seller could even consider. Sure they will probably bargain, and sure it is too much. But they will get a decent price for the car. Figure in a few grand as a consignment fee and this is not a bad route to go.

I'm just not sure about those seats...
Those seats are different.
My entire interior in Metropol blue. Just order a set of Lloyds mats from Suncoast in grey (they were on closeout for $70).
Then I'm gonna pick up the rear console in satin silver from bumper plugs.
I feel my interior looks like Darth vaders bathroom, only in blue.
Gotta break up the color.....

On the flip side the paint is far from perfect, and I replaced the tires. For me it was just the right combo of price vs. what I wanted. I would have easily paid 32k for your car.
Nate
At the risk of looking like the idiot who paid too much...I just purchased (in July), a 2004 996 C2, factory aero kit with 65k miles and paid $31k. While I definately know I could have purchased a lessser mileage car for the same money... I looked at more than a dozen 996's of various mileage and price. it come down to the upgrades, over all condition; belief in the previous owner/records, it was always a California car (shipped to me in Florida) which to me meant no salt/snow/rust concerns; clean carfax, pre purchase inspection (california) post inspection by my mechanic (florida); all maintenance records (religious oil changes etc) from the original dealer, new clutch, new tires, 19" Work wheels, factory aero kit, H&R Coilovers, 500watt Apline Amp/receiver/cd changer/JL Audio speakers, super clean paint and interior....and I am the second owner. Mileage was/is a major concern but it received two clean bills of health. The ONLY issues are a dead key remote and its probably 3/4" too low! I have NO remorse for what I "over-paid". Absolutely look for the best price, but "best" isnt always the least expensive.
Uh, what makes you think you overpaid?
You think 65k is a lot of mileage? Given the concerns around the 996 engine (which are overblown constantly) 65k on a 6 year old car is a great mileage for the car you chose. Not too much (just over 10K a year) not so little that you have to fret over gaskets/seals/bearings failing prematurely because the car wasn't driven regularly.
You also have one of youngest 996s out there (yes I know they made some in 2005).
Plus factory aerokit?
You got a great deal on the car. Be happy. go drive.
i think the problem is that these cars has hit the $20K mark.... but in all reality, the better ones are closer to $30k. People should not just look at the lowest prices..... you do get what you pay for with the 996.
You are right on target. I paid around $29k for mine last fall and still have not seen a car that I like for a better price. The cars below that price all have at least one fairly expensive or unacceptable flaw. And none of the cars below that price have a hefty set of options like PSM, full leather, advanced technics, and comfort packages. It's all about the options, baby!
I do casually wonder about the effect of color on price. I searched a long time for a red 996 - surprisingly hard to find. Purhaps the overwhleming popularity of silver and dark metallics will eventually run its course and then my rare Orient Red will be more valuable...
I didnt overpay! Thats my point to those overly concerned with price. I got a great deal and LOVE it. Its my daily driver...so I indeed have confidence in my purchase. But THANKS for the reassurance!
Thanks everyone. Sorry I was out of the country on business for the past couple weeks and never checked back. I appreciate all the comments. I think I'm just going to hang on to it and add another to the collection.
Regards,
I looked a 15 other 996's before I picked on my 02 996 Cab, with >50k full service history, all the options I wanted and nothing I didn't for $32k from a dealer. I wanted to get a super clean car and thats what I found. I know I could have paid less but I got the car I wanted for a price I was willing to pay.
It's easy to look around after the fact and always find better deals. At the end of the day you just have to find something you like, buy it for a price you are comfortable with, and drive the hell out of it.
You have to set yourself a budget (including fees and first year maintenance and emergency repairs) - and then buy the most car you can afford with that budget. If people tell you that you are $2K or $3K over or under what they think you should have paid - it's really irrelevant. If it's the car you have been looking for, with the options you want and it fits in your budget - then buy it.
I looked for a year for exactly the color / option / combo Mk2 - that fit in my price range, and I bought it and didn't look back - had plenty of 'expert' friends tell me "oh - you overpaid by $x - I could've gotten you a better deal" - but it really was an irrelevant discussion.
Opps my bad, yea it's a 2002. Thanks for the catch gotta fix that.
I got it from a dealer, but got a great deal for my trade because I bought and maintained it there.
I may have overpaid for mine too (at least many would think so). It's a 2002 targa, sport seats, xenons, bose, 18" light weight carrers, flared rockers, heated seats with only 13,500 miles on it plus CPO for $34k. But the condition was near new with all records from the dealer.
To me, it was worth the extra $5k compared to others out there with no CPO and not near new condition.
