You may need to use a pliar to loosen because it fits snug in the clear plastic or lightly tap if from behind with a tool.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

this worked for me,, just follow it word for word, the little clips are inside , look INSIDE the metal housing where the lighter plugs in, there are two LITTLE clips pushing and locking in !!

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm nearly finished changing all my interior's trim to carbon fiber. The installation has been very straight forward...a piece of cake. - Sadly, on the last piece, I'm stumped. -I've an '01 with the three piece upper center console. I've removed it without event, but I can't figure out how to remove the cigarette-lighter from my old piece to reinstall in the new carbon fiber piece. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

The passenger-side door lock mechanism has self-terminated in the locked position, and I've ordered a new one. Problem is, the driver-side key, central lock and inside passenger handle do not release the door to remove the door panel and access the lock mechanism. Is there a clever magical way to release the lock without mangling the door panel with closed-door removal? PART 2: Does anyone have experience removing the door panel (and releasing the 9 retaining clips) from a closed/locked door perspective?

POST 3Original post

I just did this on Saturday for the second time - it's amazing what PITA this piece is! My car's an '05, but I assume the parts are the same. 1. There's a green metal conductor piece held on by a black clip attached to the lighter internals - remove this. 2. You'll notice on the outside of the lighter, there is a black lip over the clear plastic trim. The internals of the lighter (metal parts) are part of the black piece. Push it from the black side so it comes out the front. You may need to use a pliar to loosen because it fits snug in the clear plastic or lightly tap if from behind with a tool. 3. The clear plastic piece comes out from the front as well. Again, you may have to twist it from the rear with a pliars to loosen the grip. There are couple of clear plastic clips which are part of the piece. They should slide out between the plastic tabs ("C" shaped) which are attached to the console surround. 4. Reinstall in reverse. Take your time and try not to force any of the pieces too hard. Eric

Quite a predicament. Your situation appears near impossible to remedy. If I were in yours shoes, I would first attempt to unlock the door with a slim jim. Just a thought. Good luck.

POST 5Original post

The cigarette lighter is one of the most temperamental pieces to remove. Check with renntech.org--there are a few threads with detailed instructions which may or may not work! I've done it three times, and each time was different...It will come out eventually.

POST 6Original post

The interior door handle cable mechanism is mechanical and you should have been able to pull to open. If not, I have no answers for your first question. However, there are multiple videos for the 996/986 door panel removal located on YouTube. The locking mechanism itself is a little more difficult as you have to align the key pin into the mechanism before seating it in place to bolt up. If you need help PM me. However, I'm out of town until Saturday.

POST 14Original post

How do you remove the green part in step one? I have tried everything I can think of and it is starting to break apart, as there seems to be no way of disconnecting it without damage. I got the black clip off very easily.

POST 15Original post

If your old one is the European spec one that doesn't quite work for any US lighter accessories, now would be a good time to replace it with the US spec one. Not expensive. In that case. Just break the old one up with a pair of wire cutters and don't waste any time trying to save it.
