Introducing my latest toy.
Basic specs:
US LHD 1987 Carrera
3.3 Turbo from a '91 964 Turbo
G50
It was modified in the US by the second owner and imported to Oz a few years back and previously issued with club permit H plates. With the rule changes, it needed to be issued with a VASS certificate to be
legitimately
issued with a club permit. So I went through the hoops. Not too bad really as it was nicely put together.
Issued with VIC club permit M plates today
Future plans include:
Sports seats
RUF Speedlines
Momo Prototipo
any other suggestions?

It is a total sleeper. Especially since I removed the screamer pipe, which was ridiculous. It
does, unfortunately, have a turbo badge on the lid which must be replaced with a Carrera badge asap.
I'm always up for a drive.
Andrew George at Sigmatech - very professional and helpful - recommended.
Yes indeed. I will give it plenty of respect. Fatter and stickier tyres are on the list - the stock 16x7's are a little
underdone...
Not quite as diverse a mix as your collection. Everything else is out of reach these days. Something not red would be good. Beggars can't be choosers.
I'll have to diversify next time - DeTomaso Pantera is top of the list
This would be a hoot for a motorkhana - when's the next one?!
Unfortnately not. I
Was expecting to pick it up today (it's been off getting detailed) but it's not ready.
Most likely be me and my little ones in the 964.
Nice toy!!!
I had it in my head it was white.....clearly not
Someone is spoilt for choice and I see in the future the sale of a wide bodied Carrera. Only to make way for something a little more spirited
Sleeper indeed. It's so inconspicuous that on the way back from Dak Dak this morning I had 2 very close calls with people who just didn't see me.
First was a guy who swerved into my lane when someone in front of him was turning right. My brakes work
. Only just missed him by a bee's d....
Second was a young girl turning right out of a side street that I was turning right into. She didn't bother looking and very nearly T-boned me.
It's the Invisible Jet.
Does that make me Wonder Woman?
it's not just red ones. Silver 911's in the midday sun are just as invisible. 3 near misses in 5 minutes today. Twice a right turning car at intersections when I'm traveling straight through and one grinning idiot who drove out of a Toorak side street without looking and stopped across the lane right in front of me FFS! ?
It's not just small Porsches believe me.
My daily for the last 8 years is a bright orange Range Rover Sport, covered in stickers, a massive roofrack and a pile of lights. I'd had it 6 weeks and some clown turned right out of the junction I was turning right into, he drove straight into the back corner of it ripping off his front bumper and guard. Sorry mate I didn't see you were the first words out of his mouth, before he admitted he was so busy looking at the car he forgot that he shouldn't pull out until I was past him. Bugger all damage to mine, think I had the bumper repainted.
6 months later as I drove past a line of stationary cars, the one in the middle pulled straight out into the side of me, going all the way from the front wheel to the back and leaving her front bumper in a heap on the road. Apparently it was my fault she didn't see the massive orange car in her mirrors...
Then of course someone used it instead of their brakes to stop at the end of a motorway slip road, because they didn't see it sat stationary. Towbar ruined their car, not a scratch on mine.
Then we moved here and I brought it with me. All was well until a small Asian gentleman didn't see it in Kew a few months ago and walloped the back of it at a junction. Apparently I shouldn't have been there because he was too busy looking right to make sure he could keep going. My towbar didn't quite get me off scot free this time, so the bumper got painted again.
Until I bought this car, I hadn't had an accident in 15 years, so believe me it isn't just small cars that don't get seen
RUF Speedlines
17x9 & 17x8
235/45/17 up front - hits the guard on the right side over bumps or heavy braking. New tyres required - either 215 or 225 and will probably roll the guards.
255/40/17 at the back. Easy fit.
Any recommendations on tyres?
Got new tyres today from Stuckey
Dunlop Direzza Z2
Front: 215/45/17
Rear: 255/40/17
The old 235's up front kept banging the guard. I contemplated going for 225 but decided to stick with smaller to be safe - I don't think I need that much up front.
Watched the car drive around the corner - I like the RUF Speedlines - they fill the guards nicely and just look right on the move.
Took the beast out for a run up to Baw Baw early this morning. It was a wet and foggy morning when I left home at 6am. The upside was the roads were completely clear. There were a few obstacles along the way - lyrebirds, tree branches, rocks and bark on the road as well as some loose gravel in sections that had been resurfaced. I drove to the conditions as always but the tail has a tendency to get ahead of itself sometimes, especially when given a bit of encouragement...and in the wet.
I'm really pleased with the Dunlop Direzzas. They held on really well.
300km round trip. Who's up for the next one?
Back home after a month in Europe.
Fired the beast up and the previously inoperable radio is working. Hmmm. That's good I guess.
Checked what CD was left in there. John Denver... Not quite what I was expecting. The 930 had Metallica.
Great to get back on the road with this toy. The other two's batteries are completely dead.
I'm a sucker for shiny Porsche stuff so have found myself in possession of a pair of GT3 CS seats. So I thought I'd see if they fit in the hot rod. Not to everyone's liking in an IB but I like them.
I wanted to use the OEM sliders. All good except for stupid little tabs at the front of the rails. I could have hammered them flat but I don't like ruining stuff so I've ended up mounting them a bit forward. I have some spacers to allow for mounting a bit higher to clear the tab which would let me mount the whole thing a bit further rearward but I'd have to drill another hole in the mount on the floor - no drill to hand so that will have to wait.
So for now, they're a bit too far forward for my liking. Height is ok but with a helmet it would be tight. I think different sliders might solve the problems all in one. I have some but I'd need different side mounts. I might go down that route at a later date. Anyway, pics:
The annoying tab:
Rails are a bit longer and mounted a bit forward to clear the tab:
One in (oooh what's that in the background):

The list includes:
Tial wastage with [TBD]bar spring
Sports shocks
Rollcage
Steering wheel - thinking either 930s wheel (which I have already) or Momo Monte Carlo
Have a lead on a bigger turbo and headers that might make things more fun

Looking good man!
If your going a full cage (front section) then the height/clearance can become tight. This is due to both the seat mounting heights and sunroof, can be fine normally but tight with a helmet on.
Half cage though, no worries!
Latest instalment...
I've been a bit underwhelmed by the power and perplexed by the boost dropping off under full throttle so started investigating.
Dyno said 210hp atw, peak boost 0.65bar and lambda dropping under 0.7. That backed up what my 'butt dyno' was telling me. And it was worlds apart from an old dyno sheet that showed 325hp atw.
Anyway, turns out something's NQR about the cat. The turbo just wasn't spooling up properly. Whack in a replacement set up and, well, it's transformed the car into what I though it should have felt like. Now pulling consistent 0.8bar boost and very very lively. It's a wet day in Melbourne too
I'll put it back on the dyno in the next few weeks to see where it's at.

Starting to tinker again.
930 brakes will be going on shortly and some suspension tweaks.
Considering other wheel options for something a little lighter than the speedlines. Any ideas?
Been a while since I've updated this. I kinda gave up when photo bucket decided to break the internet. I know there was a fix but I didn't do it but for some reason I can see my pics again.
I've moved on to imgur in any case.
Anyway, since last year, I've added fifteen52 outlaw wheels, subtracted the 996 GT3 CS sports seats, added black leather OEM sports seats and just tonight I put in the RUF 350 km/h speedo.
So now I have a mix of gauges - 964 turbo tacho to match the engine, RUF speedo and Andial boost gauge. Can't quite make my mind up. Wouldn't mind finding a RUF boost gauge.
I'm also considering EFI - but came across FrankenCIS which I'm researching.
Oh, almost forgot - 930 brakes are on, 930S steering wheel and new Bilstein shocks all around.
Wow! Never seen that series before. Chris from Turbokraft was different to what I expected. Tony, the dyno man was interesting and definitely worth listening to in his 3 episodes. Thanks for the suggestion.
A few years on and there’s a few updates.
Pole Positions have replaced the sports seats, RUF steering wheel is on as are RUF front and rear bars, 964 Turbo S tail and KW Clubsport coilovers up front. RUF mirrors are next.
Will eventually put coilovers in the back but next time the engine’s out so I can do the bracing.
Some interior work is on the cards too rear seat removal, replace the horrible RS door cards and new carpet/matts
