Ultimate drivers 911? I guess you are in a better position than most of us to judge! With several 997 GT3's in the garage, what do you think? Which GT3 in your garage would you take for a Sunday morning blast into Wales?

POST 4Original post

Just so fecking chuffed that I own one! Only done 800 miles so far, car is awesome. Someone described a 991 GT3 as a weapon, I feel that sums it up. I am a very lucky man. Nice to find a great new video as I have watched all the others countless times.

As it's only 17secs quicker than the 7.1RS round the Ring, I doubt it can pull 6 over such a short track... Happy to be corrected though. It is a lovely colour, however real drivers use a clutch!

Might be that the 991 is a tad better on tight twisty stuff whereas the gt2 has better torque and is faster on the long runs up to and just over 200 mph gt2 definitely has better 0- 100 times What a car that 996 is and just overly in yellow or red

V8KSN said: Good man! So, I take it you don't miss the Aston then? Hi Kul, parting with the Aston was a bit of a wrench. Then having 3 months wait for the GT3 was a bit of a pain. Though I realise people have waited so very much longer. Today I sat behind a V8S in traffic, there is no denying what a fabulous looking thing they are. Aston Martin have been wonderful with us but then so are Porsche! I was not prepared for such a roller coaster of amazing service and hype . Dick Lovett Tewksbury my heartfelt thanks. Our GT3 is so very sharp, I am amazed! I cannot fault any aspect of the build, the finish. Dear God the thing is so focussed. I have had a play around 7000rpm only briefly cos I am trying to be mechanically sympathetic; so very difficult because it wants to fly. As to when the traction control kicks in I really don't know because it waggles it's arse like a good un. I love it though I admit to being in awe of it! Suits me just fine !!!

Check out the extensive technical deep dive on the 991 GT3 by Carlos as part of his Let's Geek Out series. http://youtu.be/apjC960P3LI I haven't watched it myself yet - but his previous episodes on this series on the 918, P1, LaFerrari, M3/M4 and others have been brilliant. Just make sure you have about about hour to spare!! My view on the 991 GT3 - besides the dream of a 997 GT2 RS - its the only 911 I'd get back into atm. They are immense on the move. POST 20Original post

therein lies the rub. I do/intend to do loads of track days in my caged out BMW CSL. I'm no driving god, just like to enjoy myself and push safely. whilst i had started from a 6speed manual, the paddle shifter just allows you to focus more on the corners and getting the most out of them. No doubt, rowing a box, heel and toe sequentially down the box is tremendous fun too but i no longer think that you can't enjoy the track experience with paddles. Speed is speed and going fast is always exciting. On the road however, i actually think having a manual is much better (provided you are not stuck in london traffic and giving your left calf a proper workout in Gt3s). The interaction is less frantic and you can savour each executed gear change and enjoy the sensation of driving the car at less than all out attack. Let's face it, one can always heel toe better and shift faster. It's just possible to continuously improve. so, whilst i started from no way, I'm now thinking it'll make a fab toy when the guys that are not tracking them give it up for the next greatest thing in a couple of years. Just like my cal, sucks as a daily driver but special on track.

A lot of people who do own more powerful cars than my wee poke, were feeling that Porsche has missed the point too. Just look at the alfa with carbon chassis,300 kg lighter than a cayman and i think cheaper. Porsche have been missing the point for a few years, who wants bigger brakes to pull up more weight, who wants faster gear selection to make it faster. Its a shame really.

Higher specced cars can obviously weigh more......heated seats, sports seats, leather dash, lift, anti dazzle etc etc all add up. Re the 991 appearing larger I agree but in some ways this may be accentuated by a lower roofline making it look wider.......according to the handbook there appears little difference in the widths at 1.81 and 1.85 but its unclear whether the former 997.2 dimension includes mirrors......

With 75kg driver is something called EU weight or similar. DIN as used by Porsche is 90% fuel and fluids with no driver. Put it another way, there is absolutely no way any 991 gt3 weighs 1365kg which is what it would be per you are saying. Porsche have usually been quite off on their claimed weights so if they claim 1435kg it wouldn't be a surprise to see most cars coming in at almost 1500kg fully fueled without driver, if not more.

If you look at the other vid,the front tyres look well chewed up on the gt3.The size and weight of these things is going to be hard on the running gear. To be fair, and not take to seriously,i wonder what tyres were on the hotrod comparing against a standard car.

And so little traction..?!? http://youtu.be/IYrJA7Dax5k What do you expect in 2 gear, not sure what that guy is trying to do or prove! If you look at the other vid,the front tyres look well chewed up on the gt3.The size and weight of these things is going to be hard on the running gear. To be fair, and not take to seriously,i wonder what tyres were on the hotrod comparing against a standard car.

Here's another quick review. Conditions were not ideal but worth looking. http://youtu.be/BU_qEHpRiCo

If so the 991 was on MPSC2 and the other car was on Nitto NT01. So slight tyre advantage to the 991 though both are in the same sort of sector.

I have driven willow springs in a 355 about 8 years ago, its a great track If you put a cup driver in the 991 he would have leathered Jack in the older car so not really a factual comparison.

The driver of the GT3 -- Randy Pobst -- won the SCCA World Challenge GT Championship with K-Pax/3R Racing in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car in 2007 and then again in 2008. He is a Porsche factory supported driver, and was chosen by them to make an attempt on the production car track record at Willow Springs in the 2015 Porsche 918, which he set.
