Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
If you wish to have an absolutely industinguishable PSE2 style mod (the tone is slightly lower and dB +3), you need to use a 2.25" bent corner bypass from muffler nipple to exit pipe.

Leading evidence: 'Use 2.25" bent corner bypass' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use 2.25" bent corner bypass' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

im inching closer to that special purchase... and am wondering what the PSE is, is this a exhaust upgrade, or a valve you fit, i understand it makes the car sound a lot better,. does it also increase bhp at all ?
go easy i am a complete novice.
thanks
its an option from new or retro fit the parts are 3K almost now + fitting you can get the same kind of sound from sports boxes for a lot less than this or mod your boxes to sound good , but a PSE is from porsche only
i was in the same place as you a year ago read all the posts i could all saying go for a PSE , i did and its the very best thing on the car my advice don't buy a car without one or the first time you hear one you will be sorry
Rob
Got mine done at H&S and you'd be hard pressed to notice too much when not giving it some beans, but on full chat is a lot meatier sound.
A huge improvement in tunnels, too!
Maybe I am mad, but I think it sounds better since i swapped from Tesco 99 to Shell V-power.
3 months in to 996 ownership and the PSE is still the single best thing about my car; having test-driven a couple without it, in my opinion it absolutely transforms the car. It's not any faster at all, but it sounds so much better I'd almost say it's worth walking away from a car without PSE or some sort of 'PSE-alike' mod...
uh:
I've got the H&S modification on mine and it sounds fantastic! Through the tunnels in Germany recently it was awsome. For the money you cannot beat it.
The mod is bespoke in the sense a man will make holes and weld pipes (bending optional).
The default mod is a PSE1 (cloned/sold widely by Oettle in Germany originally) straight 1" pipe bypasses the muffler completely (stages 1,2,3) from entry to exit pipe. It is quick and easy. You get this unless you specifically ask otherwise.
This mod is between 250-300+VAT (car is lifted and both mufflers removed, mod'd and refitted). Seems to be more for 997 for some reason, possibly just supply and demand etc.
Technicallly this mod only mimics the 3.4 PSE1 system perfectly.
Howver, it is still a bypass and works fine on 3.6 mufflers.
If you wish to have an absolutely industinguishable PSE2 style mod (the tone is slightly lower and dB +3), you need to use a 2.25" bent corner bypass from muffler nipple to exit pipe.
This mod mimics the PSE2 perfectly and is called a FisterD mod (Darin Fister first cloned/sold widely).
Note: this mod is ineffective on 3.4 mufflers due to internal design differences.
The PSE2 mod is both more involved (cutting muffler nipple, bending correct pipe curves etc) and more material (longer and wider diameter stainless steel pipe).
Take a look at the links here (half way down page) for more description and photos:

If you want this mod (if you have a 996.2/3.6 or 997) it is doable, just more money.
