i know some her are very committed to the "NO SUNROOF" option but i'll bet that most of us under 6'3" that use our cars as daily drivers like having a sunroof which is well designed and never buffets you with wind- at least up to 95 mph.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

not trying to make trouble--just a sense of the group. i know some her are very committed to the "NO SUNROOF" option but i'll bet that most of us under 6'3" that use our cars as daily drivers like having a sunroof which is well designed and never buffets you with wind- at least up to 95 mph. i use it constantly at temps between 50-88 degrees. i had a 1979 911sc without a sunroof. frankly i missed having it but consoled myself that i got the car for $1k over invoice because it was so hard to sell. resale was no problem--except for seller's remorse that i ever sold such a great car. unfortunately this guards red 911sc was quite a potent cop magnet.

POST 2Original post

Ignacio, I think is a great option! I don't have it and would love to!... In older models, seems that the sunroof remove some rigidity of the chassis specially in hard circonstances f.ex. when you track the car.

It's comfortable to drive in even with helmet on. However, I do find that at low speeds I must lower one of the windows a bit to prevent pounding.

At 60-80 mph, I do have to lower the windows a bit to prevent the poundng. If 60-80 is SLOW, I'd like to know what Pete considers to be fast!!!

POST 5Original post

I get alot of comments on how nice the car looks w/o the sunroof. It makes the lines much smoother. As for missing it... roll down the windows and drive fast... all the wind you'll ever need.

POST 6Original post

I have one. I never use it. If I were to order another 996, I would order it with sunroof delete. Good Luck.

POST 7Original post

Never had a problem with the sunroof at 6'4", even with a helmet on. The only time I open it is at dusk or night. However, I would sooner delete the option on the next go round.

POST 8Original post

I love my sunroof but here's my story: - It worked perfectly until one little brat kid of my friends played with it opening it to the full.. after that it wouldnt close. I found out that it was raising up before really wanting to shut close, so by doing this i will block the horizontal motion.. I managed to pull it out very slowly but scratched a big deal of the corners in the process. NOw i only use it up and down but never horizontal.. SInce i got no dealers in this country, there's nothing i can do... Help! Wael C2 996 1999

POST 9Original post

I like the sunroof, however, evertime I try and use it, there is pounding wind noise.

POST 10Original post

I placed the order for a 2000 AWD Targa in July of 98 after just returning from the UK and having a dealer there tell me that Porsche was bring back the OLD style Targa. Obviously.... I dearly love my 78 911 SC Targa. I seems a perfect solution/compromise between the convertible and the coupe and unlike the convertible it isn't butt ugly when the top is up like it might be most of the time here in Seattle. I don't dislike the sunroof on my 01 C4, I use the tilt up position almost continuously. I find that it helps to prevent the windshield from fogging as often as it seems wont to do. If I had my druthers I'd take a new 996 with the old style Targa top. But since that seems impossible I have talked to a few specialist body shops about a T-top conversion.

If 60-80 is SLOW, I'd like to know what Pete considers to be fast!!!

Ok Palting ... you had me out driving on a pretty chilly day with my sun roof open, checking out when it does and doesn't pound. I found that between 30-40 mph it pounds {actually not bad compared to my 525}. From 40 to 100mph I didn't notice any pounding. I double-checked 60-80 and nothing ... why would they be different? Fast is a relative term, but around these parts more than 100 is too fast and I never run with it open on the track ... so not sure if it pounds at higher speeds.

POST 12Original post

If you blow too hard/fast into a whistle all you do is pressurize the chamber. It's only at moderate "blow" rates that you create "standing (pressure) waves"

POST 13Original post

Well, one of has to be the smart-as*, so it might as well be me. I enjoy my sunroof....

POST 14Original post

I love my sunroof! Being in sunny SoCal makes it pretty easy. Most of the time I drive with the sunroof open and all of the windows down. I love to listen to the sound of the engine as I drive through the streets. It's also very cool as I'm entering the freeway to hit the windows and sunroof one touch buttons and listen to them "seal" as I accelerate onto the freeway. It's like going to "warp speed".

POST 15Original post

I really like the sunroof, have almost always run with it tipped or open. I am another one at 6'3". You can completely eliminate the buffet at lower speeds by reducing the aperture by an inch or so--it's tunable. Easier than arriving at just the right tire pressures...

POST 16Original post

I have one 996 without sunroof and one with. And in all of the cars that I've owned with sunroof, the total percentage of time I've had the sunroof open is about 1%. I just prefer a cabriolet for the full open air experience, and the sunroof just doesn't do anything for me. By the way, if you close your sunroof about 1-1.5 inches, you'll eliminate the buffetting. Try it.

POST 17Original post

It's geat for ventilation when I drive and smoke a fine Arturo Fuente, at the same time!!

POST 18Original post

I love the sunroof in my car - even at 38 degrees driving to work today it was great. You just have to watch the locals as you drive through Jersey City as they are likely to try and lob a grenade in as you drive past...
