I recently got my car, and haven't had the top down too many times, but feel that the rear wind deflector and whatever you call the mesh things behind the seat headrest hinder my visibility top up or down, besides I think the car looks better without all of it.
Has anyone tried it both ways? I haven't removed them yet, but the wife would like them gone, which is a switch.
I'll bet your wife won't like the wind deflector gone when she ride in your Boxster without it. They make a big difference IMHO.
She won't like them gone with the top down.

Agreed. I've driven both styles in different cars, and there's a big difference, even for me (without long hair). My wife and I have also driven many other convertibles without some delfector there - they are pretty awful. If I didn't get the deflector on my car, I would have definitely gotten one, as the stock one works great.
But, you can certainly remove it and find out... I suppose if you're only at city speeds, you may not mind it (I think your wife/GF/long-haired-partner would still want it, haha).
I've had many convertibles over the years, all domestic cars. My last one being a C6 Corvette, and none of them had a deflector. I like the openness of the top down, and to me it's a little too busy with all that stuff behind me. When I get a chance, I'll remove it all and see for myself. I don't have to worry about my hair, cause we parted ways in my 20s.
Yes, these are a must at highway speeds - especially with knocking down wind noise. Well, if anyone wants to go in the opposite direction and doesn't own a windscreen, I'm selling the clear windscreen that came with my 987. Either PM me or watch the classified section as I hope to post that shortly. Cheers.
So why are you selling yours?
Haha! Great question,
@CharlieM
.
I actually have two of them here, and only one 987!
I remember that the 987 was louder than the 981 per wind noise, where my wife and I couldn't easily have conversations on the freeway with the top down...and it would have been impossible without the windscreen.
One key thing that I'm realizing as I'm getting older, is I'm having some measurable hearing loss with tinnitus, and I do wonder if my driving convertibles for 20+ years has aggravated such. So yes - if a windscreen is going to knock down on the noise and you're not wearing ear plugs, I highly recommend one.
The convertible doesn't help - if you're riding the bike without good earplugs that's definitely a cause for hearing loss. Was at a local BMW motorcycle club meeting tonight, most of the guys are past 50, some WELL past 50.. and yelling to each other and then saying "What?" is awfully common. We are all entertained though with the whistling noises in our heads..
The other thing that I do notice is that the 987 - you're a bit higher up in the seat than you are in the
981
- which may put you more in the direction of the wind flow. I'm guessing that seat placement, plus aerodynamics come into play here.
