Is there any significant difference between
987.2
and
986
/996 steering?
I have not driven a
987.1
enough to know where this falls.
I noticed the
987.2
uses a unique rack and the
997.1
,
997.2
,
987.1
use the same rack?
Does anyone know what the change is from
987.1
to
987.2
rack?
I am trying to figure out the reason my
987.2
steering has significantly better steering feel than a
986
/996.
Same tire/wheels/alignment.
I know the ratio is changed, but the difference seems not due to ratio change.
I would like to change my 996T to have steering feedback similar to my
Cayman
. I suspect reducing the PS assist may be the answer; possibly a mod to the control valve is in order. Hoping to find someone who already tried things.
The Turbo having AWD probably means the steering feel would never be identical because you have extra components to turn.
.1 cars use the same rack as the entire 997 generation
911
; the .2 does have a unique steering rack, however the parts catalog doesn’t hint at what might be different about It.
The
996 turbo
has had AWD components removed(Differential, driveshaft, front axles). It is RWD only.
I even put the same front tire/wheels on all 3 cars;
986
,9987.2, 996T. Identical aggressive alignment on 996 and 987.
The 987 has dramatically more steering feedback.
Anyone else compare a
986
and
987.2
back to back?
Anyone have info about what made
Porsche
use a new rack on the
987.2
but not the
997.2
?
Not sure how much the ratio changed, but that can make a huge difference in driving feel, so that would be my first guess.
The answer seems to be the 997 generation cars went to a variable-ratio steering rack that changes from 17:1 to 13.8:1, while the 996 generation cars are fixed 16.8:1.
The small angle ratio is about the same 17:1 is very close to 16.8:1; about 1% different.
The mystery is why did they update the 987 but not the 997 for the respective .2 versions. I am sure there is a German engineer that has the answer.....
