Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Fans running high makes sense - the car doesn't know the engine temperature so default is to run the fans hard, just in case, to prevent overheating.

Suggestion

For things like radio and window, it might be better to just feed it some external 12v power for installation/testing rather than use the ignition key.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Any reason I can't connect the battery and turn the key on with no engine in the car? I've got a while to wait for my case and heads to come back, and there's stuff I'd like to do that will require battery power. Stereo, needs a window regulator, etc. The ECU is completely disconnected. Any body modules gonna freak out and explode or something?

POST 2Original post

I don't think you would damage anything, but it would most likely trigger a whole bunch of error codes. You can always clear those, of course. Depending on what you've removed, power may not go to where you want it if the computer is not there telling the car everything is good to go. For things like radio and window, it might be better to just feed it some external 12v power for installation/testing rather than use the ignition key.

POST 3Original post

Just to close this out in case anyone else is wondering. I hooked it up and turned it on and every alarm bell, whistle, and failure light in the vehicle came on and yelled at me for my actions. Oddly, the radiator fans turned on and went straight to 11. Full blast and LOUD. I'll probably disconnect them before I do it again, they'll suck the battery down quick the way they were running. But everything worked and nothing seems to have self destructed.

POST 4Original post

Fans running high makes sense - the car doesn't know the engine temperature so default is to run the fans hard, just in case, to prevent overheating. Good to know things powered up, but the bigger question will be what happens when you get everything back together - will the systems auto-reset, or will you have to reset them somehow? Be prepared with a PIWIS or Foxwell or similar to get the resets done, because they may not happen automatically...
