Took some morning shots of the installed lip, lighting was much better.

I set the center of the lip 1/4" recessed from the front edge of the bumper.

I made a second pass with a hand screwdriver and while pushing the washers forward, tightened each screw.

Suggestion
I had been regularly taking the car up to about 90+ prior to adding the lip, and noting at what speed it started to feel 'light' in front and washy over the freeway pavement dips or fast lane changes (usually around 80+mph).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The project: Add lower chin spoiler to 2002 C2 standard bumper (08/01 and later facelift cars only).
Cost - $211 plus ship
Install time - about 1.5 hours
Difficulty – 4 out of 10 (IMO)
Tools – masking tape, screw gun, dremel
Optional tools- two bricks, two medium size Fedex boxes (for the ghetto-style garage install..)
Porsche part number: 996-505-986-92-01
I was trying to find a way to improve the aerodynamics of the OEM 02 C2 front bumper, without actually replacing the bumper.
I figured that adding a chin spoiler would give some added benefit, but where to find one?
Looked high and low for aftermarket add-on lips, but only found one from TA ($700+) and another from some ebay dude
but it was ugly as sin- and $600
I came across a thread at renntech where some pcar owners had bought some sort of inexpensive under-spoiler that
fit on very well. No one had specific info other than they bought it on Ebay germany and that they think it is an OEM part.
I worked with Ric at Suncoast (Florida dealership) and Jeff at Sunset (Oregon dealership) to try and track down the elusive part.
What I found was the 02+ GT3 front bumper lower-lip add on for about $200. It is black, poly, and screws on under the bumper.
Looking at pics it seemed that it was a very close geometry to the standard 02+ bumper and might fit with minor massaging.
So, I ordered one from Jeff at Sunset Imports of Oregon
www.sunsetimports.com
(would have ordered from Ric @ Suncoast,
but the shipping to West Coast was killer!!)

So it is a very subtle enhancement, may help reduce under-car air a bit especially after the car is dropped 1".
If anyone else is keen on this idea I will post the rest of the DIY steps along with pics-
The fit / finish is very good and the lip sits totally straight from all angles. It may look a bit off in the 3/4 view, but it is totally straight.
EDIT: DIY is posted on page 2 of this thread!
I am keen on knowing more about the install as it looks good.
I just recently installed the factory unit on my '99 C2 (Part Number:
505 986 02 G2X). Looking at this one it sticks out in front more than the one I have which basically sticks down.
A few questions (some of these might be answered with the DIY steps):
1. What is the orange line on the lip?
2. Did it not come with the plastic nuts and screws to hold it in place (mine did)?
3. Am I correct in that additional holes for the sides had to be drilled and setup?
4. No cutting was necessary?
5. Will this work on a '99 C2?
6. Is there any other lips that may actually stick out further or am I just being silly?
Thanks
BTW...when are you going to drop it?
I like it too - I wonder if it would look ok on a Silver car and if it fits on a 99 C2
Also not sure about the screws....I wonder if rivets would be a better choice with washers on each side.....
Quote:
1- The orange line is double-stick body tape. I will cover that in my DIY. The orange is just the sticky cover and peels off.
2- Yes, you can use the plastic nuts but I was advised against using them. If this part gets a lot of downforce applied you would want to use screws or rivets.
3- Yes- 1 additional hole per side due to #4.- very minor.
4- I had to trim 1" off of each end as it slighty protruded into the fender well. Very minor, no other mods required.
5- No, this will only work on facelifted 996 cars (08/01 and later) - Actually I think there are several options for pre-facelifted cars. i'll see what I can find.
6- i'll see what I can find. and yes you are silly.
Planning on dropping it next week or so with some 'beta test' Agency Power coilovers from Vividracing.
I will post the full DIY in a bit-
Quote:
nope, will not fit the 99's as far as I know. but there are other options avail IIRC.
Rivets would work fine, but remember- this part will get messed up eventually and rivets will be a pain to remove. but, rivets will not unscrew either... so it's really your choice.
I do advise using big fender washers to distribute the pressing force of the screws / rivets.
This is one of the lips available for pre-facelift 996's -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...spagenameZWDVW
google search for '996 lip spoiler' will find you a few more-
I'm wondering if the lower lip piece from the pre-facelift GT3 bumper will work for pre-facelift cars?
One of you will have to step up, order one and test it out.
BTW- Icemann, dont hate me for the multiple posts..
For added lift cancelling in the front, I put the GT3 cup front splitter (much more pronounced than the factory GT3 Street unit) on my 99. It bolts on the car, under the front bumper and faces down, not forward. You can't see it from outside of the car, but at speeds of 75+ you can definately feel the difference.
I'll try to dig up the part number.

Sure thing. It'll be Thursday for the pictures and Friday for the posting though...the 996 rarely sees the light of day with the exception of track days.
It's not quite as streetable as it once was.
Due to the limitation of the forun system (only let's you include 10 images in any one post) I have put the DIY into two posts:

DIY STUFF
------------------------------
Ok so here's the steps. This is a pretty easy install, you just need to have a good eye to line it up before you drill holes and screw down.
1. You need about 18" to 24" under the car to lay comfortably and adjust / fasten everything. Most of your work will be under the car.
So, get something SAFE to jack up your car with- Don't be ghetto like me with the "angled driveway 2-brick method" - I do not want to be responsible for you getting squished. btw, I used OSHA-approved bricks...
Lay out a blanket after you have the car up high enough and lay the lip under the car: (sorry for the crappy pics, the afternoon sun was coming straight in behind the car)
Clean the underside of the bumper and if neccessary chip off any scraped plastic (for those of you who park by braille...). You want a smooth surface.
you will want to line up the center of lip with the center line of the car.
I used the center hole on the lip as a reference then stuck a sliver of white tape on the front edge of the lip. when I put the lip against the car the tape sliver gave me a center reference mark for the initial fitment.
It is easiest to get your initial fit if you can sandwich the lip up to the car snugly, then move it around until it looks straight. i used a couple of boxes for the props that held the lip against the bumper. (those free Fedex boxes do come in handy!!)
MEASUREMENT:
I set the center of the lip 1/4" recessed from the front edge of the bumper.
On right and left bumper corners, the mounting side edge of lip should be flush with the underside front edge of bumper.
At the wheelwell sides, you should have approximately 1.2" of the lip ends protruding into the wheelwell area.
If you line up initially to these specs, you are off to a good start.
Now that you have it in place and have adjusted it around to get it even, use a piece of tape on the middle center of lip to hold the lip in place on the car. Ditto for each of the sides nearest the wheel well.
Now crawl under the car and look at the center mounting hole of the lip.
It should line up with the center screw that holds the bumper to the car.
this is a good check to be sure that you have every thing centered. If you do not, you will see a lot of the orange tape of the lip sticking out on one corner of the bumper or the other. So it's pretty easy to tell when you have it just right. You should barely see orange tape at either of the bumper corners or sides.
Now tape the lip to the bumper in several spots to hold it in place.
(This pic is just for reference of line-up- You should not have your screws in yet).
Starting on the drivers side of the lip, grasp the white masking tape handle on the orange sticky cover and begin peeling it off of the adhesive. do this slowly and gently so as not to move the lip. press the adhesive up firmly to bond to car.
2.
Now, you will begin putting in your screws and washers.
Start with the center and work your way out right / left.
I used a dremel with drill tip to make 1/8" pilot holes, then used a screw gun to put the screws in. Do NOT over-tighten or you will strip the plastic.
I put the screws in snug at first but was still able to slide the washers a bit.
I made a second pass with a hand screwdriver and while pushing the washers forward, tightened each screw.
Put in the rest of the screws and pull tape off. Remove boxes.
You will have to make one new hole on each end closest to the wheelwell.
Look on far right of pic- I popped in a new scew about 1" from wheelwell.
Use a dremel and cut off the 1" lip overhang on each side.
Check your screws for tighness, and you are done!
I want to change the front bumper on my year 2000 996 and like the GT2 look. Any tips where to get the best quality GT2 aftermarket front bumper for my car?
Holy hell- this lip makes a HUGE difference at speed!
I had been regularly taking the car up to about 90+ prior to adding the lip, and noting at what speed it started to feel 'light' in front and washy over the freeway pavement dips or fast lane changes (usually around 80+mph). I pretty much traverse the same stretch of freeway. When the rear wing deploys it seemed to add to the problem of the front lightness and porpoising.
so tonight, I had a nice cruise in my pcar to Long Beach along with a buddy of mine driving his tricked 944.
Hitting the same stretches of freeway at 95+ and some other stretches that I used to slow down for, the car was tight. No front bobbing and it felt very good, like it wanted more.
I really didn't expect much from this mod since it is a pretty small lip, but really, it did make a dramatic difference in feel and stability.
anyhow, just wanted to share that. I'm definitely pleased.
I have looked everywhere for the same type of lip for my 99 C2 that you have. It is a simple look that does not kill the stock look. Wonder if there was a GT2 style lip for the 98-99s...I think the other options look crappy that I have seen

If you want to do a bit of research, contact Ric a Suncoast Porsche (Florida) or Jeff at Sunset Imports (Oregon). Info at beginning of thread.
They are both familiar with this project as i've thoroughly bugged the **** out of both of them.. LOL.
There should be a 99 GT2 lip equivalent they can look up and send you, if you are willing to gamble shipping costs to try it out. Maybe this one will fit as well, the under-bumper on the 99 looks like it might be of similar measurement.

True that brother...
Thanks for taking the time to post pics, you seriously raised the value points on this thread. Looks great!
Hey, is that a lift in your garage? Nice!
Thanks for the kudos.
The lift is a unknown brand that was purchased when a local custom marble countertop manufacturer went belly up.
I purchased both units they had, they used them for lifting raw stone to the cutting table. It's essentially just a lift table that I converted to a scissor lift by installing/fabricating moveable arms.
They both have a 6,000 pound capacity and run on 110V. For $500 and another $240 in materials, I think I did pretty well...
...the only downside is they are pretty high fully lowered compared to an acutal auto lift...so my ramps are a good 8" high in order to get the lowered 996 and the earlier 911 I have on it.
sorry for the newbie question, but what do 99 owners use for a front lip if this one will only fit 01+ models? Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks
My car is a '99 and I am using the '99-'01 Aero Lip.
My lip is designed for the Aero equipped 996 so installation will be a breeze. The lip that p0rsch3 put on his car is the aero lip for the -02 and on car...
Sorry to be potentially beating a dead horse jstgermaine, but do you have the factory aero kit installed on your car, or did the lip you added just bolt onto the factory 99' 996 bumber?
Thanks!
I currently have this attached to the non-Aero (stock) front bumper. Whenever my Aero bumper gets back from paint, I'll move it over to the Aero bumper.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

FAAAAAAAAAAAST response. You must be bored at work too. Thanks alot man.
Also, where'd you find this lip, and what was the damage (if you don't mind me asking)?
Bored is an understatement today! I've been waiting on my travel info for three days now...I leave tomorrow! Gotta love the corporate run around.
Back to the topic. I purchased a few of these from a small OE supplier. The damage at the time was $145ish each. I don't know if they still have these available though, as they are the GT3 Cup front splitter versus the smaller GT3 Street. The street version they do have, and I think those are just under $100.
They aren't a sponsor here so I won't link to them.
