POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ive had my 911.2 Turbo S for a year now and much as I love the performance, I miss the drama of some of the previous supercars I have had. I don't want to change car as the 911 is so practical when I need practicality, but I want to upgrade some of the components on the vehicle to reintroduce the excitement. I'm happy to spend anything up to £20k to get the drama back. More HP, more torque, more exhaust noise. Suggestions? Paul

POST 2Original post

The best tuner for the 991.2 Turbo S is probably Techart they do a tuning box they call Techtronic and they also do a sports exhaust a nice benefit is that it comes with a warranty which would be backed up by their UK importer Tech 9 Motorsport. An alternative is a tuning box from A&A (also German) they appear to be quite proficient and do their own development with other "tuners" own branding the A&A stuff - this is a much cheaper option than Techart and likely technically as good but without the warranty. http://www.aa-tuning.de/de/8/news?cid=81

POST 3Original post

Nine Excellence have a very good reputation for the turbos. http://www.nineexcellence.com/upgrades/9e-packages... This is where I would go first if I were you.

POST 4Original post

Move to a normally aspirated 991 - specifically a GT3. The Turbos are fast and efficient, but do leave a lot of people 'cold'.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have thought about doing that but I use the back seats a fair amount so sticking with the Turbo S is my only real option. I’d like to put some of the GT3 fun into my Turbo S

POST 6Original post

For a lot less than £20k you could buy a GT3 without the cage and get back seats retrofitted as a potential option? I think Sharkwerks have recently launched a 991.2 exhaust

POST 8Original post

GT3 isn’t the answer here. OP says he uses his car, probably almost daily - mileage is an unfortunate issue on GT cars. Also says he makes use of the rear seats...I imagine he probably quite likes the ride, comfort, usability and practicality of the the Turbo, some of which the GT car can meet in part but the reality is that it’s a totally different car. As some have said 9e has a great reputation, I’ve also seen some good things from Litchfield -I believe they are Cobb partner.

BubblesNW said: Nine Excellence have a very good reputation for the turbos. http://www.nineexcellence.com/upgrades/9e-packages... This is where I would go first if I were you. I talked to them a few months ago. The haven't cracked the 991.2 yet and are still working on it. The Techart option is a piggyback unit so doesn't rewrite the ECU.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Have any of the tuners been able to rewrite the ecu yet? I saw the Litchfield exhaust mod. Looked like the best out there in terms of improved performance. Claims an extra 45bhp. What about Akrapovic exhausts? Anyone had any experience?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/991-turbo/4025... http://www.ipdplenums.com/products/plenums/turbos/... http://www.aa-tuning.de/de/8/news?cid=81 Seems there’s several options but just unsure which is most reliable / gives true performance enhancement

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

http://www.tech9.ms/images/file/Tech%209%20Brochur... Techart also do exhaust and engine upgrade? Seems to me this is the most convincing option at the moment? Or best to wait?

Gemballa 820BHP 991.2 Turbo S is so fast as it is' adding BHP will not add GT3 levels of interaction. adding an exhaust etc is not going to give you enough of a BHP hike to make it feel any different imo. although 820BHP has to be fun if you go the Gemballa route:-) Edited by Porsche911R on Monday 6th November 10:15

GT3 is a perfectly usable daily - I have done so for seven years now including Winter. Don't see any area beyond rear seats where a Turbo would be more practical - same cabin, same boot space and the ride with PCCBs is better than on a vanilla 911 with sprots suspension

Another interesting one is EDO who does have a decent rep delivering the goods although they will be expensive http://www.edo-competition.com/cars/porsche/blue-a... If the OP is serious he is best off dealing with a reputable UK company like Tech 9 or maybe 9E as suggested.then he has full local back up if there are any problems. Personally I would give the A&A tuning box a go as it is relatively cheap and from my research well developed. Can't see why the OP would be particularly drawn to a slow GT3 having experienced 750NM in madness mode, completely different driving experiences.

POST 19Original post

OP wants more "drama" given the 991.2 Turbo S has so much power that I doubt you can get anywhere near it's performance envelope for more than a a couple of seconds on the public road how is adding more power really going to change this ?! if I were the OP I'd also want to try a car equipped with an upgrade before spending what's probably a serious amount of money.

I agree about adding more power not really changing what is already a ballistic ride although it will make it more ballistic The A&A option is cheap ~1600 Euro plus a few hours fitting and can be removed and probably has some reatined value as it is a plug in tuning box working off the various sensors. Here is the dyno chart, that +100NM is definitely going to be felt IMO.

I can only find German sites and my German isn’t that good! You would be on your own with this one, buy it from A&A who will ship it UPS to you and then get your local friendly indy to fit it. Noone to hold your hand if there are any problems but they are pretty unlikely IMO.

POST 24Original post

PaulDav said: Thanks everyone. I’ve got in touch with Tech9. Let’s see what thy come back with! I’ll keep posting here how it goes P Please keep us posted. I'm thinking about the Techart 720PS/920Nm kit too, probably with their sports exhaust. I love the quality of the Akra exhaust but don't like the tips and different look. With Techart, the original tips can be retained.

POST 25Original post

Maps for the two Techart kits. Can't help thinking that the first kit may be better in the real world, much more torque lower down. The second kit with replacement turbos looks like it has more lag lower down but comes on strong at the top end

POST 26Original post

Piggy back solutions have been around for many years but you need to understand how they work - they can only interrupt certain parameters - they work in a simple example if you want more boost / you read the value and then tell the ecu that the boost is lower than it actually is. So it thinks it needs to make more boost - that is how it works. Same for fueling and timing. The best way is being able to get into the actual ecu and updating and controlling all values. This is the best solution by far and the safest assuming the tuner knows what he or she is doing of course. This is available for 991.1 currently. At the moment the code is accessible but it has to be done on the bench / that means taking the ECU out of the car and making the changes via laptop on a bench. The correct way is to be able to flash the ECU via the ODB port. This is what is proving difficult at the moment. Ken

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Ken So would you say I’m better to wait 3 months until someone has worked out how to flashbthe ecu?

POST 28Original post

I would normally agree with Ken on the Tuning box v ECU re write but I think when a 100M Euro turnover Porsche tuner like Techart sticks its name on it you know that the piggybacking has been well developed on the engine dyno and on the Autobahn plus on a new car like the 991.2 Turbo S owners and second owners will want their warranty intact and the TA box gives the opportunity to have a relatively untraceable tune (particularly for subsequent owners) plus TA's own warranty in case the engine goes pop for the first owner, ECU tunes most certainly will void all warranty in the UK which is fine if you are going to keep the car "forever" but most first owners don't tend to keep these cars very long (mine lasted a month). The A&A package does look decently developed and at only !600 Euro is certainly worth a punt IMO. having said all that maybe Ken has some method of maintaining the factory warranty with some new fangled cloaking device

POST 29Original post

A piggyback is never going to be as good as update to the ECU - that is not to say it is wrong and as Toby pointed out a lot of investment has gone in to these units, but the difference is in the result - a piggyback makes about 50ps on average whereas a decent ecu tune can make 100ps difference - that is where we are at on 991.1 already. For example on a recent 997.1 (earlier car but relevant for example as we have the same issue on 991.1) car we are hitting the torque limits in PSM tables in 1st and 2nd gear so much so that it cuts the throttle at 5500rpm because it thinks the wheels are spinning when actually they are not - the ecu is just programmed originally with limits that it thinks the car will be spinning the wheels. You could never adjust this with a piggy back solution. I have piggyback modules that we program already but we are working hard on a ecu update because of the Tuning advantages you get. I thought we would be there already but as others have found like Cobb etc it is not so easy. I wish I could give a definite eta - I hope we are a few months away at most but i said that three months ago. Have the same issue on the 718 platform / waiting on new car being delivered next month to start the same process.

POST 30Original post

Maybe try disconnecting the driveshaft to the front wheels OP....that would be fun!

PaulDav said: http://www.tech9.ms/images/file/Tech%209%20Brochur... Techart also do exhaust and engine upgrade? Seems to me this is the most convincing option at the moment? Or best to wait? How much is the stage 1 techart exhaust and engine upgrade? If engine or gearbox grenade is the full cost covered under warranty? seems a no brainer if T does provide that level of warranty and not detectable if you ever decide to go back to stock.

In terms of warranty, anything that Porsche won’t cover because of the upgrade, TECHART guarantee to a value of 75,000 Eur. So essentially you still have a full warranty.

Have one of these landing soon I think they've got the price wrong, the blowers used to be £5K a pop each ! I'll find out soon. Does seem very cheap for 140 PS on top especially with a proper warranty. If you can pick their brains about turbos I'd be interested as I've heard the standard turbo s vtgs do all sorts of clever things like hold boost when you brake for corners etc. Be a shame to give up this sort of OEM functionality for a few hp more but maybe the techart vtgs can do all the things the new turbo s vtgs are capable of? Somehow i doubt it though.

POST 40Original post

I was correct it is ~£30K, apparently Techart made an error on one of their price lists !!

Just read the Evo review of the GT2 RS...this sentence made me think of this thread http://www.evo.co.uk/porsche/911/20309/new-porsche... Driven hard the RS is an experience verging on the narcotic, but of course, opportunities to drive the car in such a manner are almost non-existent in reality, and that’s why it’s a shame - however clever from an engineering perspective its everyday usability is - that the RS isn’t more of an ‘event’ at more realistic speeds.

Ask for a demo first Paul. 60PS in a 1600-1700kgs car with driver etc isn't going to make a huge difference. You'd get 30PS through midrange just sticking a Akrapovic or Europipe aftermarket exhaust on and better noise for £4K upwards. I'm amazed you don't find it fast enough lol or exciting. Getting me worried!

PaulDav said: TECH9 have misquoted me... £31k for the T2.1 Makes a big difference on the decision! I went direct to TechArt for some bodywork changes and they were cheaper than UK dealer. Cost difference may have changed with £/€. Dealers do not have exclusive rights and it is often worth going to manufacturer for unique work (not necessary to take car to Germany for everything)

I have a 991.1 Turbo S and if I were to invest in mods it wouldn't be directed at more power. I think the car could do with a bit of a sharper turn in and less understeer. If there were suspension mods that could achieve this thats were my money would be going. Unless you're intending to drag race the car at events I can't see how more power is going to add much more to this car when driving on public highways. Imho!

POST 47Original post

If its going to be a road car, its all about TQ rather than PS so the T1.1 looks much better value, lower price, much better TQ at low revs etc.

The guys at Tech9 have been brilliant in providing everything I need to make my decision. I have to say they are a really professional outfit. I have decided to go with the T1.1 and exhaust upgrade. Getting it fitted in a couple of weeks once my first service is completed by Porsche. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks for everyones help. Paul

POST 49Original post

So did bit of desktop research on this topic. Seems some piggy back modules aren't that reliable. They work by telling the ECU for example that its not making enough boost and then the ECU compensates. Quite a few stories of cels and cars going into limp mode etc. Its Techart and TUV approved so hopefully you won't have the same issues as other people have had. Quite a few tuners using piggy back for 991.2. I'm surprised that there aren't more tuning solutions out there for the 991.2 turbo S. Porsche seem to have made the ECU very difficult to crack as they have been out 18 months now.

Techart is very good and more importantly their aftercare, they stand by their products. You can also easily deal with them direct.

I asked because I believe your 996/997 modifications have generally been extensive with different turbos and strengthened gearbox/clutch. BGB in Florida upgraded a Turbo in June with custom tuned ECU from Ehresmann but they have high level PIWIS enabling direct remapping. They did not upgrade any internals nor turbos, just exhaust, manifolds and plenum. Can you say what you understand to be the torque limit of the 991.2 Turbo S PDK box?

They did not upgrade any internals nor turbos, just exhaust, manifolds and plenum. Can you say what you understand to be the torque limit of the 991.2 Turbo S PDK box? The BGB is not tuning the original ECU - it is a replacement. We are referring to being able to read and write back to the original ECU without using any other ECU or piggback solutions - that is how it has been done for years and years. We have been doing 991.1 mapping for quite some time with exhaust, tune and potentially intake. That gives you all you need, which was the same for 997.2 cars, they just don't need different turbos or gearbox changes/upgrades since the turbos are a variant of RS ones. I cannot tell you the absolute limit of the PDK box because there is both hardware and software - it is possible to increase in the software the allowed limits - personally don't do this because it just means that hardware will wear quicker. I have several 991.1 cars with thousands of hard miles on running approx 620whp without any PDK issues - that means no increase in software limits. I suspect the limit will be higher but only time will tell.

POST 61Original post

Thanks for the reply. I am not knocking tuning. The BGB ECU is a second physical ECU that MTO/Ehresmann cloned and then replaced the OEM maps with a custom tune, so as you describe your process. The owner keeps the original ECU for service purposes; that's the theory but of course original ECU operating hours v dash mileage will ultimately become difficult to reconcile. It's the same process used on my early 2015 tuned 3.8L in my 981 CS, except I didn't see a benefit in having an original "frozen in time" ECU to protect my warranty by "stealth" particularly as there were other visually obvious changes. On torque, ZF show 750Nm capacity although whether this is entirely correct I am not sure. The 9x1 PDK was rated at 420Nm which is what that of series engines maxed out at, but I was told by ZF they were good for 500Nm. Edited by gtsralph on Tuesday 21st November 21:53

POST 64Original post

Desert Dragon said: Why so long to break an ECU? In simple terms it is like breaking into someones computer that has a very long password that has millions and millions of possibilities. I know the last time (previous ECU) someone was paid a very high 5 figure sum to do it. Then it gets sold around. If you ever wonder why tuning is so expensive on the latest ECUs, it is because someone has to recoup the outlay. And the issue is that even when it is broken, you need to be able to read out and write back. Generally now you have to bench flash the ECU first, and then you can open up the ODB port, so that you can read and write using a cable for revisions.

Sorry so long for an update. I had an old lady reverse in the side of my car at the back end of last year taking so my vehicle was incapacitated for quite some time while the insurance companies did their best to try and get me to accept having the repaid done at a non porsche approved garage! after 2 months of fighting with them the car was repaired by Porsche Reading and came back like new. I opted for the T1.1 upgrade and have now had the car back for about 6 weeks and I have to say 'Amazing'... I am so happy with the work the guys did at Tech 9. I have completely fallen back in love with driving the car. It feels like a completely different animal. Whereas before it felt like a beast in chains that could never quite deliver what it was capable of, it now feels totally unchained. There feels like there is so much more urgency in the engine, especially at lower revs where the power was missing before. i appreciate it is only 60 more bhp and on paper % wise its not a lot, but the car just feels totally different. if you put it in sport or sport + mode (basically all the time )) then i feel like I need to concentrate on driving the car whereas before it didn't feel that way. it also has the advantage that if my wife ever drives the car, then in normal mode there is no change the car so she is still happy. As to the exhaust noise... wow..... totally different car. Deep, throaty, loud, backfires on changing down gears... everything you want from a high performance car. On top of it all the guys at Tech9 have been amazing. Their level of service throughout couldn't have been better and they have been so helpful. I really couldn't recommend the upgrade more. It unchains the capabilities of the vehicle and has certainly put a smile on my face when i drive the car.

Thats a GT3? A turbo will never sound like this. Interested in techart solution as its piggy back and doesn't interfere with Porsche ECU. When you take it off its virtually undetectable in theory but on the other side of the coin I hear these new piggy back solutions are inherently unreliable hence the question re reliability to OP.

Surely having more performance is not going to make it more exciting? Wouldn’t the money be better spent on working the suspension to make it feel more alive and better feedback? Also with a full exhaust setup?
