Well, the gas shocks were replaced with quality Stabilus ones and the noise still persists.
Leading evidence: 'Replace with quality stabilus ones and the noise still persists' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean air filters' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Suggestion
I was cleaning my air filters after doing my annual oil change change last weekend and had the rear strut tower trim popped off for easier access.

This thread convinced me to order a set for the front.

Suggestion
In retrospect this noise started about the time I had my dealer install my H&R Sport springs, and evidently they did not fully tighten the nut on reassembly.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone found suitable aftermarket? I haven't even looked, but given the nature of the
Porsche
tax I expect ones from
Porsche
will be silly priced. I'm tired of the frunk lid falling on my head. Figure if I'm doing the front, might as sell do the rear.
TIA!
As far as I know - the rear only has one strut. $100 for 1 is pretty bad IMHO.
I bought a pair from
Amazon
for the Frunk (which has 2) and will have them Friday. I'll report on the quality. There are quite a few choices on
Amazon
. (Mostly around $10-15/strut.)
BTW - thanks anyway!
My wife was standing
next
to me and didn't stop/catch the hood from wamming me on the head as I was putting our luggage in the car. ... ok, it was a humbling moment.
About 3-1/2 years ago I replaced mine with aftermarket ones I purchased off of eBay. I think the "brand" was called "Koolman", but I really don't recall. Sorry, but I don't recall the price I paid either, but presumably they were less than OEM ones or I wouldn't have purchased them.
The part is 98751255106 and is $50 for each strut, $100 total.
Edit: part number is for trunk struts.

Same happened to me with the frunk latch. This thread convinced me to order a set for the front. Looks like the rear hatch ones are still good (and $111).
I took a survey of my struts and they are all Stabilus.
The pair I brought came from
Amazon
. Cost was about $26 for the pair. Once I figured out how to remove the old ones, it took minutes to install them. They have plenty of lift power.
I used a very small flat blade screwdriver to slightly lift/rotate the retaining spring on each end... keeping the retaining spring attached to each end of the strut.
Held the hood up with my head for a bit while I took one strut off at a time and replaced with the new one...once in place I pushed the retaining springs back into place.
The hood now opens and firmly stay up in place. It feels very strong - I don't see any more head bonks in my future
The clips on my
981
struts pop straight toward you off the ball. Not sure if the 987 is the same? If so, then there is a little flat spot on the ball to get a small screwdriver blade in the to pry it off. A little hint though......hold a towel or something over the ball as you pry it off as they are very strong spring steel and can fly 20 feet across the garage when it lets go. Ask me how I know this! I'm so lucky I was able to find it afterward.
Yes in retrospect I could have probably done the same but was the first time I was seeing how it all worked. Its a very fine line between prying them partially off the ball before they snap off completely. Again I cant recall if my 987 was different, but on the
981
the clips pry off the ball toward your face
Yep, and you can't test for this with the strut installed and extended. It can occur when the struts get worn and collapsed. Tapping on the side of them when removed and collapsed can result in a metallic "tink" like sound. Many have reported tracing this sound to the collapsed strut when driving and the sound goes away when temporarily removing it
Ive had a similar sound on my
981
drivers side for three years now. It sounded like two coins on top of each other with every bump I hit. I removed the drivers strut on mine and could not reproduce any sound at all when tapping on it collapsed so not the issue in my case.
I was cleaning my air filters after doing my annual oil change change last weekend and had the rear strut tower trim popped off for easier access. While working on the driver side I bumped something and made the sound! It turned out to be the large strut tower washer between the top nut and rubber bushing below. The nut was just loose enough that the washer had a .5mm gap between it and the nut above and was the metallic tink I had been hearing all along and could easily be reproduced by tapping on the washer with my finger
In retrospect this noise started about the time I had my dealer install my H&R Sport springs, and evidently they did not fully tighten the nut on reassembly. Three years I've dealt with this maddening sound!
I popped mine on, yesterday. Pretty easy once you get how the circlip releases. Get a strong, small flat blade screwdriver and don't let it go through your hand or your eye. The new units just press on, tool free.
I used the $15 kit from
Amazon
and it was fine. Far stronger than the worn originals after 15 years.
Well, the gas shocks were replaced with quality Stabilus ones and the noise still persists. Not a waste of money to be honest but further investigation must be performed. Maybe there's something loose in or around the storage compartment behind the seat.
