All you sages forgive me if I have posted this query in the wrong spot. I am new to the forum.
I recently purchased a 2006
Boxster
to restore. I need to remove and replace the interior door panels.
Do I need to disconnect the
battery
to avoid an airbag discharge? I would rather not being concerned that it may cause loss of engine settings, data etc
Thanks
I disconnect the
battery
anytime the airbag or any of it's sensors is involved in the the job. Not much additional work, and is better to be safe than sorry.
I haven't removed yet a door panel of my
Boxster
987.2
but I have done many times on my
996 turbo
. Panels are a bit different but seems to be the same principle looking at PET. Airbags are not in door panels instead in door itself. Thus no need to disconnect
battery
. In case I need to disconnect
battery
due to airbag, I always keep
battery
disconnected for 30 min before removing airbag connector ( I needed to do this when I replaced
996 turbo
steering wheel to
GT3
Cup car's steering wheel for the 1st time - I put a resistor in wiring harness so car believes, airbag is still there). But like said, haven't done so far door panel removal on 987 and if you feel to be safe than sorry, no harm done..
Gentlemen I appreciate your replies. But what the loss of codes eg most radios require a code to work after the power has been lost to discourage radio theft.
Without knowing what radio you have - we can't predict if a code would be needed. Usually, there is a card somewhere in the documentation giving that code, or it will be written on the top of the radio with a
Sharpie
(what I always did with
BMW
radios on cars I owned with codes.)
One important thing - if you do disconnect the
battery
DO NOT CLOSE THE FRONT LID. It requires electricity to open.
At least older radios like
Porsche
CRD22 (done by Becker) like I had in 996TT, now I've removed all audio system, required code after disconnecting
battery
. Also windows need calibration and usually I calibrate also gas pedal. But like Don wrote, hard to say without knowing what type of radio you have. But most likely code is needed. It's a valid point not to close frunk lid when
battery
is disconnected but if it happened, it's not catastrophe. You can feed emergency power to fuse box to activate frunk lid with an external
battery
. Ask my how I know this...
The gas pedal calibration is for older vehicles. The manual for
987.2
says only PSM might be affected and the window end position is affected, but doesn't mention the radio. Double check your manual.
@Jrel
stated he has 2006 Boxster, it is not 987.2
I just did this a few weeks ago when I replaced my door speakers. No need to disconnect the
battery
. Youtube has a couple of good videos on this. Just make sure you get all the bolts out and use the soft pry tools to prevent breaking the panel tabs.
I would replace the speakers while you have the panels off. The surrounds deteriorate over time.
I personally didn’t disconnect
battery
either. Here’s my DIY if anyone needs it.
