Never had it on my 993 or 3.2 Targa, so I can't decide whether to live with it, have it looked at, or wait and see what happens after a change of oil.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How many of you get a faint ticking from a hydraulic lifter for the first few seconds after cold start ? My '99 C4 (25k miles) quietly ticks for about 10-15 seconds if left to idle, but goes quiet as soon as revs applied. Doesn't do it again until left overnight. Never had it on my 993 or 3.2 Targa, so I can't decide whether to live with it, have it looked at, or wait and see what happens after a change of oil. Castrol Formula SLX in now. I don't like having engines taken apart unless there's a good reason (still got 11 months warranty though). Thanks for any advice. DRC (UK)

POST 2Original post

This is normal. As long as it goes away when the engine warms up there is no problem.

POST 3Original post

Mine does it to. The switch to 0W-whatever Mobil One oil as recommended by PCNA has lessened it somewhat.

POST 4Original post

It is non-fatal, and I can tell you they will not tear down your engine for that (I asked more than once), merely annoying. Mine started with the tick after about 10,000 on the clock. I wonder if it has anything to do with the very low cold temperature viscosity of the specified Mobile syn-oil? I have been thinking of trying a higher-vis synthetic next change. Has anyone tried the 15-50w or any of the other variants to combat this?
