And the 996s in Cheshire don't count because they never seem to have fitted PATM* properly.

But almost all the suspension has been replaced - engine sorted etc etc, altogether a great enthusiasts motor - and cant believe how well it handles now suspension is sorted - LEDA dampers etc work a treat.

Some are unrecptive, others quite good. Target an enthusiast and you should get a wave. The Red Baron always used to attract enthusiastic owners, with many riding shotgun until the reuqired m'way junction.
Even got a salutory wave from a 928S4 owner after I overtook him at 160
Some
of the Boxster lot were uselss tho'. Many obviously traded up from a Z3 and didn't know what an older Porsche looked like. Therefore I would try and suss the enthusiasts before waving.
Best for waving at a 964RS were 3.2 Carreras and 964s...
Damn right!
I think the clinically unbalanced amongst the fraternity (I include myself) have developed something of a complex about this.
I'll never forget the virtual marriage that occurred whenever encountering other Tivosi, so I made sure the same would be the case when beetling.
Although I think the 911SC cap 'n' pipester I encountered coming t'other way on a B-road pre-Brunters sesh last week was rather more concerned with not experiencing a high impact meld c/o the attrocious camber bouncing than making minor pleasantries...
Actually, come to think of it, I see very few pigs being thrapped to hell and back when out mooching. I think they're all 'dayn sayth.'
And the 996s in Cheshire don't count because they never seem to have fitted PATM* properly.
(*Porche's Arrogant Toupee Management system.)
There was a good letter in one of the Porsche mags a while ago, very witty, on this very point. It refered to perceived pecking order's, roughly along the lines of people wave to those on a "level" but generaly refuse to wave up or down the model chain (e.g. is that old thing really a Porsche..down, or I could afford two of those if I wanted but prefer my XYZ...up)whilst NOBODY waved at a 924 !!
This is REALLY SAD but unfortunately (away from the enthusiast's pool) all too often true. I'll wave at anybody, but particularly young attractive blonde's !!!!
LOL
Actually it was already changed over. Must admit that the 928 held me off for a good mile or so... only gained above 130. No wonder these 964RS owners go for 9Ms +3 toaster package.
All in Germany on private roads, of course.
Rule of thumb is 996 C4 or C4S - no chance of a wave, too busy trying to work out why the cupholder isn't big enough for their Starbucks Latte. Turbo, GT3, GT2 - if they're not going too fast - good chance of a wave, they've bought it for what it'll do, not what it looks like.
Boxster - too difficult to call that one - general rule of thumb is - girlie driving it - no chance, too busy trying to find choke to hang handbag on. Bloke with 5 o'clock shadow and Hoxton Fin hairstyle - no chance - too busy thinking about his next pair of Evisu jeans - middle aged couple - good chance provided they're not going too fast to take one hand off the wheel.
Anything older generally driven by someone who owns it 'cos of what it'll do - exception to rule being those people who drive South to North across Tower Bridge - best not to wave at them unless you want to "purchase" something or invite them to swap their car for yours.
Love the comment on the speedo
It's a risk thing. I reckon the risk is worth it for air-cooled cars, but the bucking and weaving I have to contend with on public roads isn't worth removing my hands to salute something else for.
If you see what I mean
havent had any good responses in the few days ive had the car, even waved at a guy in a 968 cabrio but he didnt respond, boxster and 996 drivers seem to stare for a bit than move on
best was a german registered silver 993 that hovered around me for a while in traffic, guess he was trying to figure out what a 968 Sport was
dontlift - the use of 'T****R' as a means of addressing another PHer goes beyond what is acceptable on these forums.
Peter964RS was stating a fact, but you may (rightly or wrongly) have construed that he was being 'anti-water cooled Porsches'. As has been seen before, this is almost as contentious an issue as Porkers vs Tivs
However, by spouting stuff like how Porsche drivers will end up driving TVRs (a matter of opinion at the best of times) and then going on about how a 944's 'engine is in the right place' is hardly a calmly reasoned counterpoint. More like a deliberately inflammatory counter attack...
Sorry to bin you, but please keep rants as reasonable as they can possibly be...

Ok, get ready to shoot me down in flames but this is how it is for me.
I've done 20,000 miles in the last 8 months in my 993 C4S.
I always used to wave at everything with "that" badge on the front, irrespective of engine orientation or cooling type.
HOWEVER:
I NEVER get responses from 996 and Boxster owners.
I don't usually get responses from 924/944/968 drivers.
I always get response from 928 drivers, and always get reponse from air cooled 911's of any age.
So make of that what you will.
VS
Hmmmmn. I (oftentimes) wave at other Porsche drivers.
Never get any response from 944s, 924s, 911s from pre964 etc. They obviously think I'm being condescending or something because mine is a "new" car.
Very rarely get a response from another Boxster owner. Occasionally get a response from a 996 owner.
What was hilarious though was that when I DO get a response its usually totally OTT involving lots of headlights, a cheery wave and an enormous grin.
Basically I wave at everyone - and the
enthusiasts
wave back.
In the Tivver we wave at all other Tivs. And any British classic/sports car. You should have seen the classic MG owners wave like mad.
Its all a bit of fun.
Of course...in a marque like Porsche there will be those who bought one merely because it was expensive - then there will be those who bought one because of what it is - and hang the expense. If you see what I mean...
Edited for crap speeling and gramaargh!
>> Edited by Don on Wednesday 16th April 22:00
Well...these days Thom a 944 is a good value car with adequate power, fun handling and there's every reason to have one at that budget level. I wave at 944s myself - they just don't seem to wave at ME!
Oh..."Hang The Expense" - an idiomatic expression meaning that the person purchasing whatever item considers it the correct thing to have - and that the high level of cost is irrelevant.
I think enthusiasts who buy Porsches simply do not care that the car is relatively expensive - they purchase it for its
potential
and nothing else.
I wave at any Porsche on the off chance they are an enthusiast - so far have had a wave from a 968 and a very very nice classic 911 (though it was probably because they slowed down for a horse I was passing) I rarely see any Porsches around where I am.
I'd wave back at you Pete!!you can't generalise you know .
It seems to be assumed that if you have a 996 or Boxster you are not an enthusiast....WRONG!!

I used to wave at other 2CV owners. No snobbery there.
If another non-air-cooled-Porsche-owner waves at me I will inevitably wave back; however if I were to initiate a wave at all the non-air-cooled-Porsches I saw on the roads I would wear out my waving elbow quicker than the Queen.
So I don't.
My missus waves at all Porsches, some wave back, some don't.
Air cooled or water cooled, she doesn't care. Or probably doesn't know, to be fair. At least she's not consumed by this air vs water cooled bollocks.
Please behave dontlift - I have already had to bin your previous rant
.
There is a fine line between ribbing Boxster drivers on this forum and pissing them off - please tread it carefully.
Cheers

FFS I would have thought that the smiley would indicate that it was a light hearted jest.......
Suggest people install uprated sense of humour modules if they cant take a light hearted jest like that.
Well, if it was the first time I'd heard it dontlift, then perhaps I'd have found it funny.
Back on topic, thats a great looking 944 on your profile. My neighbour has an '89 S2 in Guards and he's well pleased with it. Sounds lovely too.
it looks ok, but lots of work still to do, fair bit of rot in the body, so looking to repanel it in GRP shortly, also need to get some new seats from somewhere.........
But almost all the suspension has been replaced - engine sorted etc etc, altogether a great enthusiasts motor - and cant believe how well it handles now suspension is sorted - LEDA dampers etc work a treat. Nice thing with them is that you can do 99% of the work yourself on these cars, if you have time and tools available.
Yes chaps lets all try to be nice - its easy to misconstrue (oooh big word
) peoples comments on forums, people lose their inhibitions when they are typing rather than talking face to face. Try to imagine you are having the conversation at a PH meet to the real person and then think how you're comments may be recieved
I have heard good things about LEDA dampers. Do they come in different poundages, or is there a 'fast road' version or something?
Also, do you know approximate costs for a pair?
Cheers
Dom
Dontlift - do you know the sizes of your Fuchs rims ?
Some early 944 turbo were equipped with Fuchs, but I cannot figure out if the sizes were the same as the NA 944.
Do not know either if the sizes were the same as 911-oriented Fuchs, but I doubt it especially for the front wheels...
edited to add: only talking about 16" rims here
>> Edited by Thom on Thursday 17th April 12:08
I got mine from Porsch-Apart they were off a 911
16"x7 on front and x8 on rear I think from memory - but can look it up on the invoice tonight if you want the details.
Paid rough end of 450 notes for them with a set of reasonable Contisport tyres already on them
I actually quite like the cookie cutter wheels - my uncle's original 944 has them and they look quite cool with the body coloured spokes and aluminium rims. Did they only do them in 15" sizes? Wonder how they'd look in cobalt blue?
I wonder how Cookie cutter would look like on a late S2/turbo 250...
However partially colour-coded 17" Cup 1 rims can sometimes
look good

I'm pretty sure the 944 option was 7's and 8's (the same as the Turbo telephone dials ?). These were the standard fit size on 3.3 911 Turbo's up to '86 and were an upgrade option for the narrow body 3.2 Carrera. Standard fit on 3.2's were 6's and 7's which look a bit skinny on 944's. I'm told, but don't quote me on it, that the 9" rear Fuch's from post '86 3.3 Turbo's also fit in the 944 arches.
Interesting this, so 944 Fuchs and 930 Fuchs were/are the same. Thank you for the information.
PS : turbo 220 telephone dials are indeed also 7" front and 8" rear.
I wave at any 911. dont always get a wave back, I dont wave at Boxters as they are a different model to mine. If I was in a boxter i would wave at boxters but not at 911's.
Ive never had a 911 lady wave back.
As an earlier post said there was a good article on the protocals of waving for porkers. I dont have a copy but anyone got it and can put it up here??
I'll let you have that one as a treat
Personally I think
any
Porsche without an RS,GT or Turbo badge is a conveyance befitting of Julian Clary, but then I am absolutely abnormal in these matters and a bit of a tw*t to boot
In my role as moderator I do, however, have to ensure that people either put a big 'IMHO' next to bigoted comments (see above) or a big 'only joking' smiley, and respect each other's choice of car.
It may take me a little longer to edit posts that slag off TVRs though
I was under the impression that Boxster owners in S.W. London are generally unaware of anything that is going on around them - the idea of one of them waving, let alone indicating, giving way, showing consideration for other road users etc. is beyond my comprehension!
I only wave to anyone that's appreciative.
It's a funny thing this camraderie between owners. I was introduced to this at 17 when I used to go out with my mate, in his bright orange 70's beetle. I started noticing lots of other beetles flashing their headlamps as we chugged in opposite directions. I thought this was all pretty cool really. I always said back then that I'd do the same, if ever I bought a beetle. In a way I will be, so I look forward to flashing up anything air cooled, veedub or pork. I can't help thinking it would be a wasted effort on 99% of modern boxter owners though. I'm sure they'd get all confused!
=======================================================
and you establish this how exactly?
some sort of tantric link with the boxster driver to ascertain whether they might wave back? sigh.
What's the problem with boxster owners you lot?
I have one and always wave to anyone with any Porsche.
I love Porsches, full stop.
If some of you whinging old geezers with 'ancient classics' stopped abusing what is clearly a great car and its owners maybe more people would wave back and Porsche owners would not be percieved as such tossers?
John, 25 porsche owner, and its yellow.
Get over it.
Rant Over.
It's easy enough to tell whether the car coming the other way has an enthusiast inside or not. They will look at your car. When I had my 993, Porsches coming the other way would either look at me (in which case either I or they would wave first), or they would be yapping on a mobile phone or posing with arm hanging out of the window and Gucci sunglasses on.
I still have a nasty habit of waving at
any
car that I think is cool, which usually causes confusion with the Kent/Surrey status-symbol brigade...
At risk of reinforcing the stereotype, owners of older Porkers tend to act more as enthusiasts
I tend to wave at enthusiast type Porsches RS / Clubsport or good condition early cars.I usually get an acknowledgement.Sad really as how would anyone think I was an enthusiast in an '02 car.
I have had a few newer cars wave at me,the best was a group of young ladies in a Polo at traffic lights last summer, stopping me in my tracks by lifting their tops.A magnificent spectacle and should be a compulsary greeting for any Porker.
When I drive my Morgan, you tend to get every single Morgan or older classic waving, people let you out of junctions and generally treat you with some bizarre respect....Then again you do get the odd cry of "Oi Noddy, where's Big ears?"
a Caterham 7 story,
One of my mates when driving in his 7, some one called out 'look at that kit car'
as my mate zoomed past he shouted back ' factory built.......'
What an insult eh.. !
I dont expect any porkers to wave back but it is nice when they do.
The older the car the more likely you will get a wave. Often its just the eye contact thats enough if you dont have time to wave.
Be friendly out there. Another question, would you stop and offer help to a porker that has broken down?
I would but only if it was a porker or a caterham, moral suport as not mechanically any good.
Stopped for a couple of caterfields and a porsche on way to le-mans last year both the caterfields with loose batteries that wernt charging, and a porker with no go juice in it.
Luckily i was in my motorhome with tons of tools - mobile battery packs etc...... can of petrol (for our generator) etc so managed to get everyone moving again.
a kind of raspberry red actually...or knobendrot as I believe the colour is listed in the factory paintcodes.
I do also wave at Triumph Dolly Sprints and TR6s in that rather nice Magenta colour.
...and I am also guilty as sin of sticky my thumb up to anyone driving any decent car enthusiastically or any exotica from any country whatsoever - and all bikers on anything decent too oh and any decent totty
When I am driving my 30 year old Land Rover I'm used to waving to drivers of other series Land Rovers. But there are complex rules which boil down to the fact that it is only the owners of Land Rovers with leaf springs who wave or respond but nearly all wave most of the time. Waves are only rarely initiated or responded to by drivers of Range Rovers, Discoverys or Defenders (which are all coil sprung). And Freelanders aren't even mentioned by owners of any of the above.
Until reading this post it hadn't even occured to me that Porsche drivers waved. I've never noticed anyone waving at me when driving my 944 and find myself only confusing drivers of Land Rovers by waving at them from it!
I am looking for a 2A or early (i.e. tax-exempt) 3 as a weekend toy at the moment, so I will be able to wave at you whichever car I am driving
Personally, I am always prepared to wave back at other Porsche drivers, but my experience is completely negative as far as current models are concerned. I personally know four 996 owners and two Boxster owners, and out of those six, only one is a 'car person'. None of the others would probably even notice you unless you were in their way. In addition, not once have I ever been flashed or waved by a 996 or Boxster. My conclusion therefore is that most new car buyers just want an expensive car with a prestigious badge, and the merits of the car itself are secondary. Now, the demographic of people posting here is of course going to be completely different, since by definition they are car enthusiasts. So please don't take this the wrong way, it's an observation rather than a generalisation. As I said, I am prepared to return a wave from the owner of a current model, but as yet, it has never happened.
Me too Rubystone!! Include very muddy 4x4's in that too! Stuck in traffic next to a rather exotic old Graber bodied Bentley (subsequently found out this car was extremely rare) in Hammersmith last summer, did same and got the most grascious nod and smile from the old boy behind the wheel. (No, not wot u r thinking!!) As I spend a lot of time crawling around London (not in the Porker...)must admit I also talk to bikers when stuck in traffic and anybody with their window open!! Bored or what!! SW London seems to be a great source of classic and sports car spotting these days -maybe we should have a PH convoy up the Kings Road one (sunny) day?
As for waving at Porkers -given up with the 996/Boxster mob (incl Turbo's and GT3's), but still wave/flash older cars, and 964RS's, of course!!!
My 9 YO son can now spot black Porsches at night, opposite direction on the motorway, or from the tiniest part showing from behind another car or poking out of a garage......
Melv
Am I a sad git or do any of you other Porsche owners acknowledge their fellow Porker drivers with a wave or some form of signal. If not, why not?
I have been doing this for months and have got loads of return signs (thankfully, none of the signs was crude!).
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
