It involves inserting a small wedge ( I think Loi just used some folded-up paper when he did mine) in each of the clips at the same time, then pulling the head-unit straight out.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello all, I bought my first Porsche 2 months ago - a 2006 Porsche Boxster S with 40k miles on it. The previous owner had a custom headunit installed professionally - he had them put in a Pioneer AVH-X8500BHS and they routed an iPhone 30pin connector to the center armrest console. Obviously this connector is out of date now and I would like to replace it with a Thunderbolt cable and do some other work. The problem I am having is that I did not receive the instruction manual for the double-din dash kit and cannot figure out how to remove the dash kit brackets to get to the back of the headunit. I don't know what brand the dashkit is but I have seen it in a few screenshots from other people on the forum so it must be fairly common. Here are some screenshots of what I am looking at: Front Overview: http://i.imgur.com/q3VH9Dd.jpg Lower Right Corner: http://i.imgur.com/pVxWEVj.jpg Top Right Corner: http://i.imgur.com/4sdyB4F.jpg Left Front: http://i.imgur.com/UsJ8HFG.jpg Left Side: http://i.imgur.com/e0RtAUF.jpg Close-up of the brackets the headunit is mounted to in order to fit the original PCM-sized slot: http://i.imgur.com/OCRYhW8.jpg I spent about an hour and a half trying to pull and pry the unit out. Pure force was not yielding any progress, so there must be some screws or clips. I can't see any visible screws on the sides that would be holding the headunit in the bracket, and the only clips I see are the four metal clips on the front of the brackets. I've tried pulling outward and inward on them with no results. Does anyone have any experience with these brackets? How do I remove the headunit? I just need to slide it out so that I can plug in some additional cables to the back ports of the radio. Thank you.

POST 2Original post

most head units slide into the brackets and "clip" from the sides. The clips are normally disengaged by sliding a flat, metal "key" into a slot that is usually somwhere towards the towards the edge of the face. Instructions are below. Pioneer user manual

POST 3Original post

I tried pulling and pushing in every direction with those clips and didn't make any progress, but maybe the key is what I need. If I don't have the key is there something else I could jam in there to get the clips loose?

POST 4Original post

maybe less damage to have a pro remove it! lemon

POST 5Original post

Not really enthusiastic about paying an audio shop an hour just to pull out the radio and put it back in, more interested in doing it myself if possible. I'm hoping that someone here is familiar with this particular dash kit and could at least tell me what brand it is or provide some pictures of their instruction manual - or anything else helpful. Edit: Just checked the box for the new headunit and it did not come with any clips or brackets of any kind, so it must be the dash kit that would have come with the key to unlock the brackets. Anyone know what brand dashkit this could be? The faceplate for the center console does not have the " PORSCHE " decal on it if that makes any clarification. My guess is that it's this one http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/EMSRA.html?Category_Code=987_interiorPCM but I'm not sure. They also do not provide any download for the installation manual.

POST 6Original post

Suncoast sells the EuroMotorSpeed kit. See the disclaimer at the bottom: "Not a factory product, made by Euro Motorspeed. The best in this industry!!" From the pictures is does resemble the EuroMotorSpeed kit - but I can't be sure. If so, there are 4 shiny metallic clips, 2 on each side of the frame. There is a trick to disengaging them - but I haven't done it in a while. It involves inserting a small wedge ( I think Loi just used some folded-up paper when he did mine) in each of the clips at the same time, then pulling the head-unit straight out. If you search here you'll find this issue has arisen before and I believe the correct method has been posted. Here's one thread - but it's not the thread I was thinking of. http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-boxster-electronics/64631-double-din-kit-stuck-center-console.html OK, found it: http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-boxster-electronics/81228-another-cdr-24-bites-dust.html BTW, the "PORSCHE" lettering is optional. Some already know what they are driving and prefer the uncluttered look.

POST 7Original post

These links look like what I'm dealing with. I tried the advice in the CDR-24 thread about wedging Q-Tips between the HU and the inside of each of the four clips, but the clips did not have enough give to force the Q-Tip into the gap. So then I tried using four pairs of needlenose pliers - one for each clip. This didn't work either. So to sum up, even when all four clips are wedged outwards away from the HU and I pull with all my strength on the HU, it doesn't even budge a millimeter. I found this picture of the Euromotorspeed kit: http://www.planet-9.com/attachments...ster-electronics/17958d1303180259-latest-head-unit-replacement-avic-120bt-2.jpg After looking at that I am 99% sure that's the kit I have, because I can see that black converter box wedged behind the HU and it has the same sticker on the top. Also from the limited angle I have I am also fairly certain those bracket pieces and clips match mine exactly.

POST 8Original post

I might be wrong, but I think you wedge the clips inward - toward unit. You place the wedge/whatever between the frame side and the metal clip. I know this is counter-intuitive. I remember being stuck in the same situation and, knowing it was possible (but not getting anywhere) tried anything I could think of.

POST 9Original post

Tried it both ways: Pushing out from the inside: http://i.imgur.com/3GWfZYE.jpg Close-up: http://i.imgur.com/TSAx4Wf.jpg & http://i.imgur.com/zCW16Oo.jpg Pushing in from the outside (video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q32SU_uaPA Hopefully you can tell what I'm doing wrong from the video. I really appreciate your help and prompt responses.

POST 10Original post

Those are the wrong tabs. Those are only to hold the bezel in place. The tabs you need are each in the corners of the frame - much smaller, Look at the photo and see the arrows labeled #2: The correct tabs, when installed with a head unit, are very small and hard to see. You insert a q-tip between the wall and the tab. You only need to move them a little.

POST 11Original post

Well now I feel like an idiot! Indeed, all I had to do was arm myself with a pair of needle noise pliers in either hand and pull inwards on both tabs (towards the HU, away from the dash) to loosen up one side of the brackets, then repeat on the other side. After switching sides two or three times the whole thing started to slide out freely and I was able to pull it the rest of the way. :thanks: Mission accomplished: View attachment 53191
