Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been looking at a couple of options: All in about the same price range 1. Dark metallic blue 2000 C2, 25K miles, tiptronic, blk leather., coupe 2. Black/black, manual trans 99 C4, 20K mile, coupe 3. White/tan manual 2000 C2, manual trans, coupe 25K miles. I also would appreciate comments (or cautions) on: 1. What do you think of the tiptronic trans? (I probably won't race...it will be a fair weather fun car) 2. The water cooled 911 vs. air cooled. C2 vs C4. Thanks for any feedback.

POST 2Original post

#2 if the build date is post 5/99. As far as 993 vs 996, C2 vs. C4, and manual vs. tip., those topics have been argued to death and it seems it all comes down personal preference. What do you want out of your Porsche? Are you driving a lot in the city? Do you plan to track it? Drive it in the rain or in the snow? Is it just a weekend car? etc. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

POST 3Original post

The TipS is not for everyone. My wife drives our car thus we have a TipS :+ ...and it's not too bad really. especially in city traffic...but certainly not as much fun as a manual. I agree with the other poster re the 993 v 996. It really is a personal choice and you need to drive both to determine. I would go with the white/tan 2000. I've grown to like white cars and with the tan it's a nice, bright combo. Good luck

POST 4Original post

I would go with the latest Porsche on your list with a manual tranny. So, choice 3 for me.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the input. I am having a VERY difficult time making a decision. This would be my first Porsche purchase First, and foremost, I have to come to grips with the fact that I have a 2 car garage, and already have 4 cars (95 Volvo 850 turbo, 97 volvo 850 sedan, 99 expdition and 02 highlander) w/4 drivers. Makes for very interesting car shuffling in the driveway. I am looking into other storage alternatives. That has to be solved first. As for manual vs tip, I prefer the manual, for now, but figure that I may tire of it. I am not planning on racing the car. Mostly for a fun drive to/from work (thru forest preserve in Chicago area) about 12-14 miles each way. The tip seemed reasonable when I tested it. I love the 2000 911 interior, but I was thinking today (on a 400 mile road trip to Indianapolis and back) if I wanted a "sport" car or a "sport-luxury" car. The latter is certainly the 2000 with the tiptronic. If I really just want a "sport" car, I may do better by looking at a 95-96 C2 C4, C2S or C4S, all of which would be less expensive (but more spartan). I dunno.....all very confusing. Maybe I should try to talk my wife into getting one of each (just kidding). Perhaps the final decision will be made if the "perfect" 911 presents itself to me with a price I can't pass up. Thanks for all of the input.

POST 7Original post

fwiw, I would choose the white/tan c2. I do not enjoy the tip. Does it have PSM? The C4 will have it standard, it is an option for the C2. I would recommend it - it is one of those things that you can't add later.

POST 8Original post

To my opinion, manual gears in Carreras are not easy to handle if you're used to Auto transmissions, since they are quite hard cars on first gear start-up and in gear shifting (trying to keep the rpm's high enough for the next gear).. They just require more concentration and devotion to the car's behaviour on gear shifts.. Unless you really like shifting gears, blipping, downshifting, clutch burning and the sound of the V6 under your submission and not the electronics', i'd recommend a tip.. I chose a 6 gear and I love every moment of it.. As for C4.. it's just that you will be driving your carrera in a different way whichever you chose.. You will get used to your choice both ways and won't regret any choice. I recommend you concentrate on the tip/manual choice and let the 2wd/4wd come along.. Wael 99 C2 996
