I replaced the 3" (4"?) door speakers with co-axial Focal Polyglass.

I ended up running across the Asteroid Smart from Parrot.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Pioneer
recently announced that the were adding
CarPlay
features to their AVIC-8000NEX, AVIC-7000NEX, AVIC-6000NEX, AVIC-5000NEX, and AVH-4000NEX models:
Pioneer CarPlay
Has anyone ever had any luck installing any of these models?
I'm getting a bit tired of using an FM transmitter in my '08 cayman so I've been looking for a better way to play music off my iPhone (for when I can't open the windows and wind the engine up).
Also, Fwiw, these new
NEX receivers have only just started shipping, so it's unlikely to find anyone that's installed one in their
porsche
yet. I'm hoping to read a couple of general reviews before I order.
I have an AVIC Z120 in my BS. Older than the NEX, but identical size and install requirements ... I'd be surprised if they've done much to change sound quality, either. My system has a 4-channel amp in the frunk. I replaced the 3" (4"?) door speakers with co-axial Focal Polyglass. I re-used the stock 10" drivers and run them with plenty of power and a 300hz cut-off. Personally, I think it sounds fantastic.
@jeffbrig, I'm waiting for some reviews myself. If you do end up installing, I'd definitely be curious how it goes.
@mmakay, thanks for the insight. One of the reasons that I was curious, is that when
Crutchfield
says that none of the NEX units were compatible with a non-
Bose
Cayman
....of course, that may simply be a matter of their being too new to be known to work.
Anyone know if the built-in mics on the steering column (
987.2
) can be wired to work with these units? Depending on if
my woes with the bluetooth functionality of the CDR-30
are resolved or not, I may need to upgrade to a new unit. I'd rather not have to rely on a stick-on mic since there's already integrated mics in the car.
There is nothing special about the Bose system so far as the head unit is concerned. If anything, you are better off with the non-bose because there is no weird processing going on. Check out "euromotorspeed" for an install kit. Aside from the kit being top-shelf, the owner knows his stuff and is very helpful.
Two years ago I installed the
Pioneer
App Radio into my car. I've chronicled it here:
http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-...yman-boxster-electronics/65088-pioneer-appradio-install-initial-impression.html
. I was not happy with that installation/solution. One of the main issues was the integration was cloogy and slow and quite frankly dangerous to use.
Over a year ago I tried to integrate an iPad Mini into my car. I did a lot of research but I could not find a reliable solution. I ended up running across the Asteroid Smart from Parrot. I have a thread on that as well:
http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-boxster-electronics/80561-parrot-asteroid-smart.html
. I'm extremely satisfied with this solution and just posted a YouTube:
I'm intrigued by the Apple CarPlay but concerned upon first blush that it will have some of the negative aspects of the Pioneer App Radio in that it's not a self contained unit, but fully tied to your iPhone. You might look into the Parrot Asteroid Smart as an alternative. It's been out for over a year and they've worked through many of the bugs and there is a whole team of blogger/hackers that have solved nearly every aspect you could desire.
I just installed a
Pioneer AVIC
-8000nex in my
Boxster S
this weekend. I have the
Bose system
, so I used the Nav-TV MOST-HUR dash kit from Euro Motorspeed:
The head unit itself is great. Easily the best aftermarket system I've used, and a big step up from the older AVIC I have in another vehicle. The 8000 has the capacitive touchscreen, which is bright enough for use in direct sunlight with the top down and very responsive. UI design could use a little work, but by the standards of aftermarket head units they've knocked it out of the park. I'm looking forward to CarPlay support later this year.
Other people have used the Bose integration kit, so I'm sure you can find comments about it elsewhere. At the moment I'd say it's working perfectly, except that I noticed the rear channels aren't working. The wiring barely fits into the cavity behind the head unit, so a connection may have come loose while I was installing it. Won't know for sure until I have time to pull the unit again.
I just installed the 800NEX in my
Cayman
. The rear
Bose speakers
are not working. Maybe the subwoofer is not either. Tried turning rear speakers on in the settings on the unit. This allows the full front/rear left/right cross speaker display to show instead of just left/right but the rear speakers do not play when the sound is shifted to the rear. Has anyone solved this?
You can only control F-R fade with the original head unit. You need to to set the fade on the CDR, then swap it out for the AVIC. I assume you used the Euro Motorspeed kit? In the instructions they tell you to crank up the rear bias. You can call them for support if it doesn't work.
blein! Just when I thought I found my upgrade, having the
Bose
is starting to get annoying. I'll look over the most-hur stuff, I'm thnking it's signal related.
Edit: whoops I'm late to the party.
Btw I hate multiple processors in a row for this reason. Just crazy to spend $700 to remove the
Bose
you paid $1300 more
For.
Hey guys new on the forum so hows it all going? I have a 2005
Porsche Boxster
with
Bose system
and I just purchased Avic8000nex from
pioneer
. What all will I need to make this work? cheapest rout with nav and backup camera working.
Ive read some about the MOS unit from Euro or even just passing the amp what do you guys think? Thanks in advance.
I installed an AVIC 8000NEX in March. I kept the
Bose amp
and speakers and connected my
iphone
5 to the unit via a ProClip mount with lightning connector. All works well. Good sound, navigation, and
SiriusXM
. There are the usual problems with the AppRadio App which is not a very stable program so I never use it. 2 weeks ago
Pioneer
released a firmware update, 1.06, that allows
Apple CarPlay
to work. After downloading and installing the firmware,
Carplay
comes up automatically. It too works as advertised. The hands off phone works good with the top up but is useless with the top down, unless the vehicle is parked, due to wind noise to the Mic. I may try to find a better place to put the Mic. Overall I am satisfied with the
Pioneer
product and the installation which was done by CustomSounds.
Had the AVIC 8000NEX in my
Cayman
for over 4 months. Love it. Do not miss anything about the old
PCM
at all, despite the speaker issues (reconnecting it today just brought back bad memories and not a single regret.). Just installed
Apple Car Play
and it is a sweet addition. Be prepared to loose functions such as Maps as your cell phone reception comes and goes.
As for the
Bose
speaker system, my particular
2006 Cayman S
has the 21C
Bose
Sound Package 987120-2006-6. Initially after the AVIC 8000NEX install, just the dash and door speakers worked. Today I tried putting the old
PCM
back in and cranking up the volume to the rear speakers. This definitely got them working with the AVIC 8000NEX, although there are some issues. The left/right balance adjustment can be controlled from the AVIC 8000NEX without problems. The front/rear balance can also be somewhat controlled. To hear the rear speakers at all, it has to be set all the way to the rear. The volume then drops and has to be adjusted way up. If you turn off the rear speakers without setting the volume back down, you basically blow the doors off your
Porsche
along with your ears.
All said, it sounds as good as it did with the
PCM
using the original
Bose speakers
.
The installer I use in New Orleans has me intrigued. He would like to remove the
Bose system
and install aftermarket door and dash speakers and an amp. If I do it, I'll tell you what I put in and what I think. However I am leaning towards putting the money towards installing a 8000NEX with a FLIR camera in my Wrangler.
