I never got the annoying canister off and just ran the lines to the unit.

If I remember correctly, all you do is slide the cannister up, left or right using a little pressure.

Suggestion

The first time I did it it got it out using needle nose pliers to crimp the plastic fitting piece but that crimping weakened it and either the 2nd or 3rd time the piece broke so while it goes back into the mounting hole it no longer snaps into the mounting hole.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi Folks, I'm in the middle of the NAV install per K-man's article . I'm stuck at the charcoal canister removal show below. I've removed the two torx screws but can seem to move the canister. Is there anything else holding it in? Also, Is the wiring harness for the CD bundle in the the left column to the left of the canister? Thanks for the info. Jon

POST 2Original post

If I remember correctly, all you do is slide the cannister up, left or right using a little pressure. There are tabs on the back of the cannister. Sorry can't remember which way.

POST 3Original post

Still couldn't get the canister off. Very frustrating. The other PITA is getting the existing MOST cable disconnected from behind the brake booster. I'm tempted to break off the existing fastening tab, but I'm trying to keep this install as clean as possible. Taking a break for the night to avoid breaking anything and will continue tomorrow. If anyone has any further detail on removing the canister, please chime in. Grazie.

POST 4Original post

Sorry to hear you are having problems. On the top of the charcoal cannister you'll see two pins going up into the bracket plus the lip at the end of the bracket (front of car end) that "hooks" onto the charcoal cannister. What this means is that the cannister bracket has to come forward (towards front of car) then upwards to come off those pins. As I recall the bracket literally snap fits onto the cannister with some pressure. What I believe I did was take the screws out as shown that holds it to the metal "wall" then pull both forward and upwards at the same time and it will "pop" out. You have to come far enough forward to clear the bracket from the "wall" which the pins in the cannister that go up into the bracket resist, but then once you clear the wall you have to pull up to get the bracket off those pins and unlatch it from the cannister. I also concur that getting the MOST connector off the "wall" behind the brake booster piece is a real pain in the you know what. The first time I did it it got it out using needle nose pliers to crimp the plastic fitting piece but that crimping weakened it and either the 2nd or 3rd time the piece broke so while it goes back into the mounting hole it no longer snaps into the mounting hole. No issues with it being that way and no one can see it where it is so no worries if that happens.

POST 5Original post

Thanks, K-ManS. I will give it a go today, and report back (hopefully with success)

POST 6Original post

Finished the install and all seems to be working. I never got the annoying canister off and just ran the lines to the unit. To get the MOST cable disconnected from behind the booster, I ended up snipping the white cable ties that secure it to the wall...this allowed enough slack to reach the release.
