I'm not saying this is the best way to post photo's, but I use a photo-editing bit of software that came with a Sony Cybershot camera years ago.

Thanks DCE, had a good search and the majority of views was to use hammerite smooth, so one coat with the brush on type and another 5 or so coats with the spray, looks fantastic and with the new stickers they do look OEM in my opinion, would post pictures but it says they are too large.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking for some advice. I need the calipers repainting/coating, the seals are fine so dont need a refurb, just looking for someone in the Manchester area who could do the job, has anyone any recomendations? I have removed the calipers, just need them finishing to OEM finish. :?:
Try the guys at the wheel specialist in openshaw, they certainly have the facilities there and can vouch for the quality of work on wheels, if it's just the laquer that has peeled I'm not sure there is anything you can do other than go for a full re enammelling due to the heat that the brakes produce
its a full repaint or powder coating, not bothered just want them doing! Just to add they were black, and seeing that i'm re-painting, i want them red, can't be too much to ask surely :dont know:
There must be someone who has had this done in the north of England :?:
My friend did his red on his 996 c2 and they looked fantastic. He also did them on his boxster before he sold it. You can get them powdercoated i guess for a large cost, but if you ever get new brake pads done, it will mess the paintwork up again.
He used halfords caliper paint. Removed the wheel, cleaned it all down and painted them. Very easy and better, as you can take your time to achieve a fantastic finish. He used about 3 coats per caliper for red. They sell yellow, red and blue caliper paint.

I replaced the front discs and pads at the same time, took ages as i wanted the best finish possible and i'm delighted with my handy work.
Yeah, they do like amazing. On an Ocean Blue 996, the red painted calipers look great indeed.
After they collect some dust, they buff off nice with a soft cloth. They never seem to fade much too.
My current ones are black, and I'm currently toying with going red or yellow (I think yellow will stand out more, but will also show the muck more easily).
How tricky are the calipers to prepare for the paint? Any tips on getting them clean? How long do you have to leave between coats. If your talking 3-5 coats per wheel then the car is going to spend a lot of time jacked up I expect!
Mine were done yellow about 5 month ago, but have become damaged as ive had the pads just done. So they need a repaint.
Ill post some pics soon.
What i did is, clean them all down with white spirit. Then dry them off. Then i applied first coat of yellow caliper paint. First of all you think "oh no" as there is not alot of change. Going from black to yellow is such a change. I left it around 20 minutes between coats. I did do 5 coats per caliper as i wanted a thick yellow plastic coated look.
Anyway, i stuck at it, and wow. What a result. It did take me more coats than my friend.
I didn't do them all at once as i did not have axel stands. I did a wheel at a time.
However i did wait 24 hours before driving, as my friend explained the paint doe not dry untill atleadt 12 hours.
I ordered some Porsche decals from Ebay for a fiver and it just made them.
They really do stand out, my 996 is black, with blacked out windows and black GT3 wheels so it looks well sexy.
The yellow calipers just set it off...
Good luck with the painting mate. Its money and time well spent.
Your'e right, it took ages to get a good cover going from black to red, 2 weeks in total. Mine isnt a daily driver so removed the calipers and then put the wheels back on until refitting time. As for preperation, i sanded as much of the original finish off as possible with a dremmel, one point, ensure you empty all the brake fluid out, as it can start to weep once you have started to paint them, i know
Also dont put them on the radiator to harden the paint as one may fall off, damaging the wifes floor lamp, the hardwood flooring and require repaining, again i know!!!!
Take your time with very light coats to prevent running, it will eventually cover and the finish is lovely and smooth, wish i could post some pictures.
Good luck, all the effort is worth it
porkerman - sounds like you've done a thorough job with the calipers, I bet they look superb.
Did you do anything with the mufflers you had off me last year? You were on about having a by-pass mod done?
We could meet up somewhere this summer, as you know my 4S has PSE on it - somewhere like the snake pass or Glossop I can make no probs!
NickB, many thanks for the mufflers. I had the Oettle mod done on them and fitted, sounds great, really pleased
We will have to meet up in the summer! How do i post pictures, keep getting the message the pictures are too big, any ideas :?:
I'm not saying this is the best way to post photo's, but I use a photo-editing bit of software that came with a Sony Cybershot camera years ago. Its called MGI Photosuite and all I do with my camera photos is reduce them in size so that the forum can accomodate them.
I try and get them around the 100Kb size, re-name them by putting a letter "a" onto the end of the original photo file and save.
Then go to the add attachment below where you write the text content of the posting, left click on "browse" and find your edited (reduced) photo file, which should then have the address in the filename section.
Lastly, click on "add attachment" and that should do it so long as the file's not too big.
When the weather picks up again, when we're both off work we'll have to meet up at a half way point somewhere.
I'm glad you did something with the mufflers, they might have looked a bit grubby but they were sound enough for a by-pass mod.
