When I run quotes on UPS and Fedex, I get costs of $450 and up from the U.S.
Leading evidence: 'Run quotes' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'way i will go' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run quotes' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I just bought the GT exhaust from him and paid the core charge for less than cost to buy used mufflers plus shipping.

Suggestion
They use the same HJS cats and offer lifetime warranty on the whole thing even if you track the car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Am I missing something? I've seen threads where people have talked about paying $110 to ship a set of manifolds back to Gert Carnewal in Belgium and recover their core charge. When I run quotes on UPS and Fedex, I get costs of $450 and up from the U.S. and roughly the same from Canada. Even Canada Post (which would take forever), quotes $385.
For those who have done this - shipped parts either for modification or returned original parts to recover your core charge, what kind of shipping costs have you paid and with whom?
FYI - I'm looking planning to order the
987.2
manifolds modified with HJS 200 cell cats from Gert - admittedly, even with the crazy shipping costs, it's still a much cheaper option than that proposed by other vendors...just wondering if I'm missing something on shipping options.
I know Cantrell - they performed the Carnewal GT Exhaust mod on my car (see YouTube video)....they do not however offer the Manifolds with Sport Cats - which is what I'm looking to get now.
The fedex/ups prices start from around $100 for smallest and lightest of packages. Prices got really ridiculous last years. You def cannot ship exhaust pieces for that money.
Have you considered purchasing just the HJS cats from Gert (or a North America based supplier) and having a local exhaust shop do the welding? It would likely be the cheapest option. I considered doing this myself but then decoded to buy new headers from Soul. They use the same HJS cats and offer lifetime warranty on the whole thing even if you track the car.
Have you asked Gert if he can provide the headers for a core charge? You might want to keep your intact headers for resale? I just bought the GT exhaust from him and paid the core charge for less than cost to buy used mufflers plus shipping.

I've been all over the math on this one (And no Donald, your threat of tariffs and tearing up NAFTA has not made managing exchange rates any easier....). The core charge is €750 on top of the €995 he has quoted me for the manifolds. I have three weeks to return my original manifolds to him. If I don't return them, the total cost would be $1,823 CAD including tax for the manifolds (might be duties of 6% but it's not clear if CETA has kicked in for HS 870892 (Automotive exhaust components) yet, plus $1,196 CAD for the non refunded core charge - total of $3,019 CAD give or take $100 CAD. That's still over $1,000 CAD cheaper than the Soul Performance long street headers (excluding shipping costs). Fabspeed's headers are even more expensive. As you noted, in all cases, I would still have my original manifolds in case I ever had an issue with the HJS cats.
Bottom line, the consensus I'm reading here is that freight charges are what they are and not getting any better. So, unless I really want to keep a set of header rattling around my garage as "spares" I just pay the freight charge and come out roughly $800 ahead of the cost of keeping them and about $1,800 cheaper than lowest priced "aftermarket" option (which would still leave me with my original headers). In essence, if you assign a value of say $1,500 CAD to the original manifolds - you end up with six of one and half a dozen of the other situation. Since I'm assuming I would be extremely unlikely to ever re-use those manifolds - the Carnewal option including sending the manifolds back so that they can in turn be modified and find their way out into the wild where they will bring joy to another
Cayman
or
Boxster
owner is likely the way I will go.
I guess I didn't miss something after all....
Here is what you are missing in your calculations:
- You can get a significant discount on
Soul headers
if you simply contact them and mention that you are active on planet-9.
- Soul (or other reputable manufacturer's) headers are more efficient than stock headers, especially long tube ones.
- Lifetime warranty on new headers. This is not a trivial point. Cats can and do occasionally melt, especially if you track the car.
- You get to keep your stock headers, in case you ever want to revert back to stock.
Remember you don’t need to pay taxes since you’re outside the EU. Import duty maybe.
Have you considered just deleting the 2nd cat from the OEM headers? The OEM headers are only 400-cell. Aftermarket headers are a lot for a reduction from 400 to 200 cells.

I am quite well versed in international trade.....while I would not pay Belgian VAT (21%....I lived there for 16 years), I would have to pay GST 5% and QST 9% plus (the actual combined number is 14.99%) when the goods enter Canada/Quebec, and possibly the 6% duty if, as I noted, the free trade agreement between Canada and the EU signed last September has not taken effect yet on exhaust parts. I recently bought a indoor "smart" trainer to use in winter with my road bike - made in Italy, CETA made it cheaper in Canada than if I bought it in the U.S..
I'll contact Soul to see if they can sharpen their offer....in these twilight days of the NAFTA treaty....
It's a matter of perspective. When I lived in AZ, I had to pay health insurance premiums with a $13,000 deductible (family). Now I pay more in sales tax, but my health care is free. I can choose not to import an exhaust component....
I PM'd Soul Performance...I'd go for their Long Street Headers if the numbers can work.
There are two issues with that idea. I'd rather go to my local guy (who's a
Porsche
specialist) and have him do the Plenum, TB and headers all at once than go to some installer I don't know in the U.S.. And while I agree that CBSA are unlikely to see new engine parts on a mid-engine car with a not exactly accessible engine, I'd rather not risk my Nexus card on it. I still travel a lot and I really don't want to have to start doing long security lines again ;-)
Im having the same issue here in Newfoundland Canada. Its crazy what Fedex wants for shipping... Like crazy.. And to be completely honest I think its absolutely ridiculous what other manufacturers are charging for exhausts. I don't care what the quality, Its robbery lol.
I agree that cost of exhaust components is quite high, but consider the fact they are made of stainless steel and are designed to last the life of the car. Also before spending your money decide what exactly do you want to accomplish? Are you looking for more sound or performance or both? Do your research before committing to a mod.
I remain a big fan of Gert's work - it's just a shame that Cantrell Racing can only provide the exhaust mod and not the headers. Shipping to Kirkland, WA would be way cheaper than to Maarkedal, Belgium. This said, I'm crazy happy with the combination of Soul Perf. Long Tube Street headers and my Carnewal GT exhaust....I've got a sound I love and a clearly perceptible performance improvement.
For now I chose to stay stock and open up the cost over pipe for the sound aspect... Gaining 15 to 20 hp at the cost of 5 to 6 grand Canadian is absolutely Crazy. I realize Im driving a
Porsche
, but My
Porsche
is already 12 years old. And on top of it all, It is way more fun to drive than any other car I've Driven (and I've driven a lot).
This car was never built to be a stop light Grand Prix winner lol so unless someone is willing to go turbo, I think its better to just leave as is. Just my outlook on it lately.
